Caplan: Never Offered Gruden Close to What He Wanted

He may be more correct than most think? :dunno:

Then again what would I know, I’m just a crazy Vol fan who wanted to be competitive against Bama and LSU again. :yahoo:

I wonder how many of these same folks on here who continually attack Gruden would be singing his praise and talking trash about Saban right now if Hart had landed him?
:hi:

JG XVII thread in three years Coasty. If Butch doesn't pan out and Gruden doesn't take an NFL gig! :dance2:

I'd have the same hangups about a guy who has never had to recruit or coach college players that I have with a lot of coaches. I would not expect instant success and would judge after about three years.

Somebody posted some good information about Grudens record leading to his firing with the bucs. Not impressive. I am glad he did not come here.

As others have said, he was never coming here. He has a big ego and likes the attention. All these posters that claimed to be in the know and stating that he was in serious talks are liars.

So you knew everything about everything? You must be in one POWERFUL position. Wait... Jon, is that you?

Jon Gruden was never coming here because UT was never serious about hiring him or any other high profile coach. ADs today are too caught in trying to make a name for themselves by discovering the next great talent. This coupled with not wanting a bigger ego on campus than theirs, makes them shop for new up and comers. CBJ may be the next Saban, Meyer, or Tressel or he may be the next Dooley, Joker, or Rich Rod. Only time will tell. Tennessee, the administration in particular, is playing Russian roulette with the football program. If this hire doesn't pan out it will sink this programs to depths once thought unimaginable. Let's hope it works out!

What's worse the vols fans today will never want to fire a coach that wins 8 games every year because we have been down lately.. they have forgotten that 8 win seasons suxs and anything less than competing for the east title every year is unacceptable ....

Im afraid apathy has set in to point most fans will never demand champions on the hill in anything...

The new bar is 8 wins and top 20 recruiting classes... folks that's not us.. maybe in year one for bj but that's it.

You're exactly right. We are as a fan base comparing our coaches to Dooley, Kiffin, and the end of the Fulmer era instead of the greatness of the 90's. We have become desensitized to championship football. Our goals now are just squeeking out a winning season and loser bowl.

I frankly don't see it changing until we have a change at the AD and President.

We are celebrating recruiting victories over Vandy for God's sake!

I know I'm considered the village Dooley defender but I agree that apathy has set in but blaming him is not the place it needs to go. IMHO Dooley was truly trying to build UT to the the greatness it was and wasn't gonna be happy with 8 win seasons. Unfortunatly people don't remember how long it took majors to build up the program and how fulmer just transitioned into it. Dooley took it over at the worst pt it could have been and had a plan to get where it needed to be.

The fans just wanted 8 wins to be happy but didnt realize how to get there and get past it quickly. Even understand that Dooleys plan was to not stay at the 8 win season level. But get past it and stay past it. Kind of like how spurrier built USCjr in the yrs he has been there. Just all IMHO that's all...

I am not saying I am not supporting Jones, but you would have to admit how much pub and recruits would take notice if he went there.

True, but if they were to somehow lure him there, there's nothing we could do about it. besides, for all we know, we could be running a winning program with Jones at that point, so I really couldn't care less what the media would have to say at that point. It would all be moot.

The truth is we have been down program since about 2004. We can blame Fulmer, Cutcliff leaving, Sanders, Lawson or one of my favorites Hambone but the truth is we are where we are which is behind the entire SEC except maybe Kensucky. We are in about the same place we were when Majors arrived.

Patience my Vol friends, we will rise back to the top! The problem is it is going to have to be "one inch at a time." Good news, we are in better shape than when Kiffy and all his clowns left. I firmly believe you will see an improvement, even with a tough schedule, next year! If not, then I will join the ranks of some posters on this board. My hope (prediction) is competing for an SEC Championship in 3 years. We will have one or two surprises next year! Go Vols!

I'm not nor am I qualified to criticize Dooley especially towards his motives. He did inherit a mess but the reason coach Dooley is not here is because he showed no improvement and some would argue his teams regressed. His most competitive team was his first.

It is my opinion that the UT administration feels like it can continue and succeeded by hiring up and coming coaches on a "relative" budget and gambling on up and coming , less known coaches. I disagree with this approach and feel if you are going to play with the big boys you gotta pay with the big boys.

Dooley was going backwards in recruiting every year. If he can't beat teams schematically then we needed more talent. Dooley inherited back to back top ten classes and all we have to show for it was another 5-7 disaster of a season.

I agree the problems started long ago. And agree that it's one step at a time. Just don't think others understand this concept as shows with the treatment of Dooley.

Last season we were getting blown out by most teams. This yr we were taking them to the wire. Just because improvement wasn't showing in the w/l column doesn't mean it wasn't there. Our recruiting was doing well until all the Gruden and firing of Dooley talk stalled the work being put in. His recruiting was solid considering the situation. If it weren't for the last minute losses of Santos and Peters (hard to blame Dooley) his first class would have been a lot better. Instead he had to scramble to fill spots with bodies that he neede cause the roster was depleted when he arrived.

Don't give me this inherited 2 top 10 classes crap. What QB did kiff sign in his first class to replace Boyd's commitment?? U very much know the troubles of kiffs one signing class and how lack of it being successful hurt. Dooley pretty much had no Sr class this past season. Blame I'm all you want for that but frankly makes u a fool.

Sticking the w/l bottomline thinking at this pt in the programs history IMHO is going to continue to keep it down.
