Didnt read or watch it.. Its all coach speak at this point so its really pointless to try n decipher good or bad from it..

Bottom line anything less than some type of bowl will be underachieving IMO.. They should be able to coach us to 6 n 6.. I mean seriously..

To me it read more as a challenge to the team. Jmo tifwiw

Dooley's statement could have been interpreted that way. I am sure he would have said that was his intent. But if you are that guy busting your tail every day to try to become that depth and have your coach publicly say that only new recruits will solve the depth problem... how do you feel about that statement?

He wants to temper expectations so our fan base doesn't **** a giant brick (no pun intended) when we lose a close game due to blown assignments, penalties, dumb decisions, etc..
Honestly, if he has this team competitive against everyone and beating the teams he has a talent advantage over... I am not sure many will have their expectations disappointed.

Now if it happens repeatedly and doesn't get corrected then maybe... But I am pretty sure most UT fans understand that young players make critical mistakes.

He's trying to relay that we have a good team but because the elite talent is young we shouldn't expect to be turned into AU or Bama over night.
And to what purpose?

Maybe because of Dooley... but it just sounds a whole lot like he's trying to lower the bar as low as possible. There are many implications when someone does that... none of them are good.

sjt is suffering the "Dooley Effect"; give him a break. Seriously. After what we've been through with him, it's not uncommon to have an irrational fear of anything that looks or sounds like him.

At least partly true. I am MUCH more cautious than before about giving the benefit of the doubt.

Some still chug whatever koolaid they're offered though.

Really? That's pretty much how it was used during the '13 season.

Youth was MORE valid as a reason for Dooley in his first two years than it will be for Jones at any point. I said when Dooley was hired that his career would come down to year 3. He DID fall apart emotionally and develop a bunker mentality. He failed. But he had not failed yet when he made that very similar statement. IIRC, he made it during season two while coaching a very thin roster dependending almost completely on Fr and Sophs.

Honestly... I just don't want to hear the CURRENT HC making comments that sound that much like a guy who just failed miserably.

When he's says young I take it as a lot of first year starters, When he stated we wasn't a elite program it progressed into him saying because of depth. Which is true.

I hope the youngsters are good from the start AND to progress as they get older.

Man, oh, man. The consistency of your negative posts makes me believe if we went undefeated, you'd complain we beat Kentucky by only three points. Even if mishaps had forced us to use a cheerleader as a QB and the OL front had to play defense, thus play both both ways.

I'm just glad sjt is not my boss. When I was late for work yesterday because I was involved in a car accident on the way in, he would have said that was just an excuse and fired me anyway.

Nope.

Now if you had told me, "You know, our highways are dangerous. I could be late some time because of a wreck." Then you repeated that over and over without leaving for work earlier as if you yourself believed it... then yeah, I'd be highly suspicious.

But maybe more to your point, I AM pretty demanding that the people who work for me are the "right" kind of people. People who aren't good at their jobs, safe, good teammates, and reliable won't be happy here... and I never want them to be.

To his defense, I don't get that from him at all. I personally believe he would be ecstatic. He's just "once bitten", which is fine. Personally, I think he's gone too far to the negative side, but it's understandable.

How on earth is that a negative statement? Do you mean it is negative to hope that the young guys are already good and improve to become even better?

I honest to goodness cannot follow that.

I am not being negative... I am simply being honest. Some of the statements and you can read them in Freaks post read like a set up to excuse failures.

I can buy it being true. I do not like that he's saying it now. It reads like something Dooley would say... in fact, I believe he did. It was even MORE accurate when he said it.

His last year? Or the year before that?

Coming from you, I'll buy that. Ok, sjt18, I suppose if one is bitten hard enough or often enough, they get hardcore leery of certain things. I'm a hardcore believer who when disappointed, may cuss under my breath then bounce back up and say, "Let's try that again." No matter, we're all Vols here in the end.

Is OK. we wear different kinds of shoes. I'm a polsihed leather guy, you prefer suede. I enjoy a good pair of western boots, you're into vibram sole steel toes.
But we both at least use footwear. :good!:

2011 iirc. But I think even Dooley thought he could make some noise until Hunter went down. He at least acted like it. The guy visibly deflated after Hunter's injury.

The 2011 team is similar to this team.

I typically would be too... but the performance in '13 spoiled that for me. I am NOT saying Jones won't use his "process" to get the long lasting results he mentioned. I AM saying that I don't like it when I hear the same kind of talk following a season where team and coaching performance looked like there had never been a coaching change.

It was younger but that is a very good observation IMO. To me... that suggests that '14 will provide a good comparison basis for Jones v Dooley with some consideration to '13 v '09. OL situation is different but should not be worse. These guys haven't played but they have been in the program developing longer. WR is similar but this team has more than two guys with Hunter/Rogers potential. This year's RB situation is better for depth if nothing else. The DL was a question mark then too. You have two of the same guys at LB but older. This secondary is probably better too.

Bray wasn't a question mark at QB and that's pretty huge.

Similar situation but a slight advantage to this year on returning players outside of QB. Not completely sure about schedule. '11 did play both LSU and Bama when they met for the NC plus Arkansas at their peak. The East doesn't look any stronger now than then.

This team will do well to win 6 games. Just is what it is. Anyone who thinks we can replace our entire offensive and defensive lines and significantly improve year over year is a fool.

Serrano the baseball coach talked this exact same way each of his first two years. Come year three, he declared its time to win. And that's all they've done ever since. I think we will see the same lingo in 2015 from Butch. When he thinks he has a good, experienced team with adequate depth, he will tell us.

We aren't winning any games just for having a power T on our helmets.
