Charlie Strong

I wouldn't be opposed to Strong, but he isn't proven enough to "save us during our darkest hour" kinda thing. He's had 1 good season at Louisville. Name a signature win his program has achieved.

I'm just not sure who else is out there that would be a far superior option.

That's who it's looking like right now. I won't be disappointed but with him it feels like we're "settling". Call David Shaw, Gary Patterson, and Chris Petersen to gauge interest before putting full court press on Strong.

I would guarantee Shaw won't leave. He has done a fantastic job at Stanford and if he has another successful season next year with a trip to the Rose Bowl or better, he will get an NFL HC job. He has no reason to come here.
I wouldn't mind Peterson or Patterson though

I'm not big on Strong, I'm not really down on him either. But I think, before you go that route, you have to make a full press on Petersen, Patterson, and probably a couple other coaches too. I think you need to go after the very best coaches out there and Strong is further down the list.

understand. I like the idea of Patterson or Peterson. Just not sure many top level coaches would come here.

Well, no one has ever offered them 6 million a year before. Let's do it and see what they say. Why not? I mean, we know they're the best candidates out there. Their resumes are spectacular. At this point, it makes more sense to spend everything you can on a homerun hire than try to save some money and get a hire that could be a homerun or could be a ground rule double. We've suffered long enough with "what could be". Let's get the surest thing possible in here. Otherwise, we cost ourselves more in the long run.

fair enough I am just tired of the ridiculous names like Shaw, Stoops, etc.

If you read my post correctly, I said to call Shaw in order to "gauge interest", i'm not saying it's a possibility, but you gotta call to find out. He's only making 1.5 at Stanford. Tell him you got 4M waiting on him and see what he says, the worst he can say is "no".

LMMFAO!!! Black Power? Wasn`t too powerful to enslave Europe. I`m not racist, but there sure are a lot of racist blacks over ancient history. We whites have been enslaved before too. Every race has had it`s share of racism by the other races. Grow up. Africans are better evolved for athletics partly because slaveholders used eugenics to breed the strongest slaves. A lot of blacks will play for UT just because we`ll have a black coach. They will play harder to make a black coach look good. That is just the facts of racial issues in this day and age. Racism may be on the decline, but it is certainly alive and well in many of all colors. I don`t care if I`m banned for life for this post. That comment pisses me the fk off. The only fkin color I care for is Orange!(and pink lol) Go Vols!! ORANGE POWER!!!

You do realize that Fisher is 2-1 against Fla....his loss at NC State was bad but they converted 5......yes 5 4th downs n the 4th quarter to win that game....Fisher would be a great hire....

He is a good recruiter, that's it. He should be undefeated right now with that loaded roster and a weak schedule. He might not be a bad coach, but he won't get us where we want to be. We would be fighting for 3rd in the East every year. I'd rather have Strong, higher ceiling.

who do you want

Honestly, I'm not sure there is a "perfect" answer so I won't let on like there is. I'm not opposed to Charlie Strong in say another year or two after he has the opportunity of running up two more 10 win seasons--unfortunately we don't have that luxury. That being said, I come from a different vantage point than most as I have my undergrad from WVU (Law from UT). The Big East is AWFUL...I mean AWFUL. You are seeing how bad it was in WVU struggling to get to 7-5 in the Big 12. If I'm going to take a chance on a Big East coach they sure as hell better be winning 10 games and cruising through Big East play. Yes he got to 10 wins this year but UofL played more than their fair share of close games and lose to UConn and Syracuse...Its just too risky right now at this juncture.

If you do a side by side comparison of Strong and Jimbo Fisher at FSU, Fisher has had infinitely more success including two wins over Florida.

Would love to have him. He seems like a great guy, and his players love to play for him. I think he would recruit well here, and salvage our current class. He would improve our D. I'm excited about all the names associated with this search. Brighter days are ahead! And, it's about time,

Yeah, I've always laughed at the Stoops rumors. He must have an amazing agent, because his name gets brought up for every big opening. I remember when Ohio State fans thought that they were going to get him back in 2001, when they ended up hiring Tressel.

Stoops is a waste of time. But, if you're serious about winning, you have to make a serious push for guys like Petersen and Patterson. Make them turn down 6 million a year and the best facilities in the country. If they do, fine. But if you don't try to get them and offer as much as you can afford to do so, then I have to conclude that you don't really want to win as much as our rivals, and I have a hard time financially supporting that sort of mindset.

Make Shaw turn you down first, he's the only one that YOU KNOW can out coach competition and recruit as well (#5 recruiting class last year), and that's being at a school that takes a backseat to USC in the state, competes with USC and Oregon for recruits, limited resources, and steep academic requirements. He's only making 1.5 at Stanford so throw the bank at him and see what he says back.

2012: 10 - 2 (against a WVU-less Big East)
2011: 7 - 6
2010: 7 - 6

No thank you, that is not the type of track record I expect of a coach hired by the University of Tennessee.

What type of hire would you expect Florida to make coming off two national championships? Strong would be a great hire.

He's not fond of UF now either. He said that he didn't get the job because he was black. I could get behind Strong, but gauge interest from Shaw or Patterson before putting the heat on Strong.

Not what I asked. He said something along lines that UT was too good of a job. Florida went with someone less proven than Strong.

I didn't say that, I was agreeing with you, but there are better candidates out there that should be contacted before going all in on Strong. I think he would do well here but he's not as guaranteed as Patterson, Petersen, or Shaw.

As far as recruiting goes, I think beyond Gruden, Strong would give us the biggest boost. His ties/connections in South Florida should prove to be golden for us. Teddy Bridgewater was coveted by many a program larger than Louisville, and yet he turned a deaf ear to all of them, just to come play for coach Strong.

That speaks volumes. Strong could oversee the defense, keep Chaney, Pittman and Graham and hit the ground running. No rebuilding involved. And I personally think he'd endear himself to the players so quickly, that CP and Hunter would seriously consider returning.

Those 3 haven't proven anything in SEC. Strong has.

I get your point. No one probably would have been good enough. Like I said I don't know the right answer--if it exists. But pulling a coach with a 24-14 record from the Big East is an extremely scary proposition to me especially when of 10 wins in year 3, the most challenging matchup was Kentucky. Its just so risky from my point of view...
