Chaz Lanier watch thread

Chaz didn’t cost us the game today. Our inability to defend them in the half court for the majority of game, over reliance on perimeter scoring and inability to execute anything offensively without Zeigler on court is what cost us. Lanier could have been the hero but didn’t get it done.
Missing free throws at a critical time when you're the #1 offensive target is bad.

I’m just not sure drawing up that final play to get Lanier in iso and to drive on Manon to the hoop for the tie was the right play. Lanier hasn’t exactly shown himself to be adept at finishing at the rim. If that was the play Barnes wanted to run, I’d almost rather it have been drawn up for Gainey or Mashack to be honest. Maybe even Igor.

Watching people turn on a guy that posted that stat line is both humorous and sad.

He did have a good overall game, but fair or not, your leading scorer is judged by many at crunch time. Can this guy be a finisher and hit the shots when they matter most? They'll see his layup blocked and the missed FT. Struggling the previous 3 games doesn't help

Through 18 games:

Points scored:
Dalton Knecht: 339
Chaz Lanier: 326

3 point shots made:
Chris Lofton: 54
Chaz Lanier: 64

Isn't the Lanier criticism centered on SEC play? For comparison, through their final season's first 5 conference games:

Minutes
Dalton Knecht - 157
Chris Lofton - 150
Chaz Lanier - 162

Shooting %
Dalton Knecht - 46/87 (0.529)
Chris Lofton - 25/57 (0.439)
Chaz Lanier - 23/74 (0.311)

Points Scored
Dalton Knecht - 136
Chris Lofton - 75
Chaz Lanier - 71

3 Pt Shots Made
Dalton Knecht - 15 (15/32 0.469)
Chris Lofton - 17 (17/39 0.436)
Chaz Lanier - 13 (13/35 0.371)

A/TO
Dalton Knecht - 8/6
Chris Lofton - 3/8
Chaz Lanier - 1/11

Hopefully, Lanier can figure out how to be more efficient & effective in conference play.

Baffling, I am more surprised (in a good way) that this team is already at 16 wins. Expected a lot more growing pains with so many new faces.

Just want us to be playing our best ball in March, the regular season is about figuring it out.

There is a nuance that yes he's our best offensive option this season but he's also hurting the team with turnovers, end of game situations, and defense. So he doesn't need to be benched and no one should be calling for that but 5 TOs for a non point guard is wild.

100%, was too careless with the ball against a team that’s gonna reach and poke, gotta be better. However anyone suggesting we’re better with him benched or reduced minutes doesn’t know ball.

What’s wild to me is Gainey lead the team in minutes & had the worst scoring night. 4 players scored 15 points, he played more than all of them and was 1-6 for 5 points & missed 2 FTs late.

It’s a team game, end of the day the loss came down to let Vandy score the way we did. They didn’t beat us going crazy from deep. (Only hit 8 3s) that was a game where they were able to score in the paint or get to the line.

I guess that's kind of the difference between a 6th man and a guy who's leading scorer are expectations. Gainey has a history of being somewhat inefficient so that play isn't surprising.

The loss at the end of the day isn't all on Chaz and plenty of blame to go around (rebounding, team defense, fouling 3 point shooters x 2). I just have really high expectations for him and just want him to be better and continue to improve.

Vandy beat us because our bench had a bad night

Gainey 34 minutes 5 PTs 1-6 FG (he’s our 3rd leading scorer)
Cade 9 minutes, 0 points, 1 rebound
Dubar, 7 minutes 3 points 1-4 FG
And because our D didn't show up...you expect this team to win every time when we score over 70 pts.

Most of the posters who are b*tching now about 2 SEC losses are also the same ones who incessantly b*tch about how they don't care about the regular season and how it's a tournament sport.

He is a good player but it’s more than obvious who is the weak link on offense and it isn’t Lanier. JM is a clone of JJJ offensively and that is probably an insult to Josiah. Teams literally don’t have to guard him, he provides nothing offensively
Yeah, I'd call that an insult to JJJ.

Mashack has hit double figures in scoring 12 times in his career. JJJ did 12 times his senior year, alone, in 2022-23. JJJ was less efficient because he wasn't hesitant to shoot the ball, but he was also much more of an offensive threat than Mashack ever dreamed about being. They have almost identical 32% career 3-pt FG%s, but JJJ's came on 597 career attempts. Mashack has 104 career attempts. JJJ averaged 9.0 ppg thru his 1st 4 years. Mashack has a career avg of 3.9 ppg.

Knecht is more explosive
The Knecht and Lanier comparisons were inevitable, but they are just very different players. Explosion and athleticism heavily favor Knecht, as you mentioned. Lanier having more points is a product of opportunities. He is far less efficient. Lanier's attempting 2 more shots per game thru 18 games, and 3 more 3-pt attempts. His eFG% and true shooting % are both well under Knecht’s because DK scored quite a bit at the rim where almost all of Lanier's points come from outside 12'. The true difference in a real 3-level scorer and a 2-level scorer. Nothing wrong with being a 2-level scorer, but just comparing their point totals thru 18 games isn't really telling the whole story.

DK has that killer mentality too

Good Chaz thread bump!
Double bump. I know some were a little down on Chaz last few games, but I think most of us know who he is and what he is capable of.
Teams know that they can double him and hyper focus on him and they're all too willing to let others beat us. If those "others" make them pay, Chaz is pretty much cocked and loaded at all times, ready to explode.
