'24 CO OL Gage Ginther (Tennessee commit)

Kid at least had SEC offers, and some BG12 offers. Makes more sense. But why take either this early? Im still lost.

Makes me feel like they dont have a ton of confidence in their ability to close.
Spring before their senior season is hardly early. You’re not prepared to take their commitment before their rankings blow up, then you should pass altogether imo.

When we're in on so many big time 4 and 5 stars? Our needs seem more immediate.

My guess would be this staff does their own evaluations and don’t rely on the star rankings. They get to bring them for camps where they can evaluate them physically as well as personality and fit for the team and system. If they take an out of state player this early, they view him as a solid player. I get more concerned about the ones that appear late in the process after we missed on others we really wanted.

There's this attitude that rankings are pretty flawless and there is no room for talent that hasn't been "discovered" yet. It seems to create a huge dilemma in people's heads. "We're in on 5 stars. The coaches like this 3 star as well. <something, something, something> The sky is falling."

Let's break that down.

  1. We're in on 4-5 stars. Good thing.
  2. The coaches like this guy a lot. Noting point one, probably a good thing as well.

Panic to give == 0 at this point.
I agree. The fact that the staff likes him enough to take him with everyone we are in on says enough

This guy has a pretty good offer list for people to label him a "project" 🤔

He's the #1 player out of Colorado? At least top 3? That sounds a little better than a project
You put a 4 star beside his name and this board would boom for 3 days, look he doesn't have to play his freshman year, by year 2 with good coaching, we will have a O-LINEMAN FOR 3 OR 4 YEARS.

Generally if they take a lower rated guy this early then I look at it as they view him as good or at least comparable to the ones they’re in on with higher ratings. I’d be more worried if they were taking a lower rated guy (who was rated before and didn’t just start getting recruited due to little exposure) later in the cycle (used to be December onward, now pretty much the fall with early signing day).

but also, Heupel can’t cruit, #fireheupel

It’s almost like our coaches don’t go by the evaluations of recruiting websites, but by their own evaluations. Which is weird, since they only get paid millions to evaluate while the website nerds are raking in 5 figures to sell clicks for their bosses.

If I was a coach, I would trust my evaluation of players based on how I and my coaches evaluated the players. After all, me and my coaches’ futures depend on our decisions, not the decision of our media and other people who think they know more than we do. So far, I believe the coaches have made great evaluations.

Go watch his highlights. There's a play where this kid is making blocks on all 3 levels and he is motoring down the field in the process. This kid is tenacious. Being able to secure a recruit that is fourth or fifth on your board (which means they value him more than a lot of current 4 stars) this early is a win.
Not just 4th on the board. The staff moved him to #2 after he visited because they like him so much as a young man in addition to his abilities.
