Coach Graham explains why he left Tennessee

It looks like he was ran off by Butch Jones more and more each day. You won't find me complaining about it as long as we end up with W's

Run off? He praised Graham at every chance, during every interview. He made a highlight film of Jay for current players and recruits that used the example of Jays play while at UT of how a VFL plays football. He gave him a $35k raise initially and then offered another $40k to keep him from leaving.

Can't honestly figure out Jays motivation for leaving other than he wanted to go to a "winning program", but I can't in any way see how CBJ "ran off" JG based on his actions.

I really thought that post was obvious sarcasm, but I forgot there are/were posters who actually think that way.

Carry on!

Translation: "Coach Jones and his staff were all friends. I felt left out. I wanted better pay and a promotion to recruiting coordinator but realized that Jones has loyalty to his buddies. Coach Jones expects his staff to work really really really hard. I have four kids. I would like to see them every now and again. The SEC is tough ya'll!"

I am ready to move on. We are the ONLY people in the world talking about CJG.

Nobody knows for sure what JG was thinking, but this makes as much if not more sense than anything else that's been speculated. Plus, sometimes the emotion of someone else calling you/wanting you at the same time you're feeling less of the love where you're at leads to head scratchers like this one.

Exactly. I was ready to pounce myself til I read the disclaimer at the bottom. God knows I've done it before..... so damn gullible.

People leave jobs all the time for many different reasons. It really is not anyones business why he left. Assistant coaches make career moves all of the time. Most I would say make these moves as a gamble. They go to a different team with different players and coaches in the hopes that something happens to draw more attention to them in a good way, thus improving their chances of getting promoted through the ranks and reaching their goal of being a head football coach.

Our new RB coach came to TN for the very same reason.

Time will tell whether the change was better or worse for UT, but so far, I don't see it as being any worse. JMO though.

I hold no ill will toward CJG for leaving. Hell, it really isn't any of my business why he left. Good luck to him at FSU. Maybe he'll be back here some day, maybe not. It does not however mean, he does not love his alma mater.

First of all who gives a big fat damn that graham left to make a lateral and downward move.
Secondly who's to say CBJ won't return UT to it's winning ways. Lastly, Tennessee beat sneaker u for the ' 98 NC.
Ole jimbo lost a top recruiter when eddie gran left, I don't think ole jay is on his level in that department.
Volgrl's post nailed it!

Since Butch was hired, I have always said that Graham was not going to stay. CJG has no experience or process on how the RB position plays in a spread style offense. He has always been more of a pro style guy.

Yes, Spurrier plays the "run and gun" at USCe...but it's not a true spread like what Butch runs. I just think Graham is going to feel more comfortable in a place like FSU for two reasons: 1) He is back in a pro style game 2) He is still in the south at a football school and doesn't have to go head to head with UT

Just seems like a good fit for Jay and I wish for him the best. Also, if the winds of fate ever blow that direction again, I think he would be welcomed back at UT.

This is what I have always thought especially with things I heard. It is hard to be a coach of something you don't really know how it works. It is real uncomfortable from a teaching standpoint. This is as much as anything to what I think was the main thing. I think CJG loves UT and UT should love him. He probably did what will be best for HIM and for UT.

He said he wanted to grow as a coach ... seems he has a lot more growing up to do to me. If you keep jumping from one team to another you will not grow, just lose respect from head coaches throughout college. That is no way to keep your job.

Assistant coaches move around all the time. The only reason this is a big deal is because he played at UT.

Honestly, does anyone give a rat's a$$ why Graham left? He was here one season (or so) and really delivered nothing in the way of RBs to the program.

We've landed way more RBs since he left.

Good riddance, IMO. Laziness won't cut it with CBJ anyway.

Let's see, UT's rushing output was almost double in 2012 than 2011. But all some of you care about are kids currently in high school and not the ones on campus.

Yeah, Graham did nothing while at UT. SMDH!

In nearly the last 8 years he has been with 6 different teams. How many assistant coaches have you known that has done that?

Let's see....How about everyone's favorite, Jon Gruden:

1986-7...UT Grad Asst.
1988...SE Missouri State. Can you imagine today if a UT coach left for SE Missouri St?
1989...Pacific
1990...SF 49'ers
1991...Pitt (University not Steelers)
1992...Packers

6 jobs in 7 years. Assistants are somewhat expected to move around to learn from different coaches.
