Coachery

Well, I’ve been able to bounce some questions off of my friend given there is a blend of legitimate leaks, and bogus ones among local journalists. It’s Franklin. It was Franklin Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday and today. They’ve believed it’s been wrapped up since Sunday night, but taking steps forward has stalled more than once. This is the only real offer that has been made. We did not offer Dykes, Fleck or anyone else. Based on past conversations, I still think Elliot is 2. I don’t know that as a fact. They had hoped to have a team meeting last night, then this morning. There is not currently anything on the schedule for this afternoon either. That doesn’t sound good if you like the idea of Franklin. That said, my friend says they’ve been agreed on general terms since Sunday. He has no idea why it hasn’t crossed the finish line. Everything he’s heard is that it’s Franklin, but nothing is moving in a way that indicates the normal next steps. It could just be slowly moving forward or coming off the rails. My friend says it’s Franklin until he hears otherwise.
I really hope it isnt

dint u say in ur last post that the franklin deal fell apart?

I don't buy Elliott being number 2 when you have the likes of Fickell, Chadwell, Napier, etc. sitting out there at least willing to talk. No way you go from one successful coach all the way to a coordinator with no one else even getting looked at. And if that is the case, then I'm sorry that means Currie is better than DW, and I just don't buy that one bit.

If he is DWs second choice, he is probably a pretty damn good option.

Makes sense based on the feeling I get from the limited info I have.

Doesn't that bother you though? The fact that he's willing to take this huge of a risk on a guy with no experience, while proven successes are just sitting there potentially willing to come? It bothers me quite a bit.
almost like the search is staged and rigged, or DW is totally clueless to what the fans will accept!

Exactly. We dig up transgressions on ourselves in order to save $12m (and that’s if UT doesn’t reach a settlement, which thru probably will), then deduct the cost of paying Glazier, then deduct the cost of legal fees that will surely be expended when Pruitt sues. And now you have to over pay for a coach by millions because of the NCAA cloud you created yourself, so you’ve basically saved nothing and set the rebuild back a few years. At least. And the NCAA will probably slam UT just as hard because it’s the NCAA.

Only the idiots running this university could screw thongs up this badly. Thank got we have a pro AD now, but the actions of the last “administration” will haunt us.

Just make the NCAA find the transgressions. It’s patently clear that they can’t find water if they fell out of a boat. Alabama and Clemson players tweet photos of themselves with cash and new cars, for God’s sakes.
Yep. Any decent lawyer is gonna say up front.......zip it and let me do the talking. In this case everybody shoulda just played dumb and say "I have no idea what you're talking about." I actually think the NCAA not only expects that but in a weird way appreciates it.

Now the Mims case, for instance, regardless if any money changed hands just spin it as though, "Well that's just typical UGA bs trying to make us look bad or getting even for Mays filing a lawsuit against them." I've yet to see a case where a school penalizes themselves in an effort to minimize NCAA sanctions and get much leniency. I think their compliance dept. is over-whelmed and they just can't make fair/unbiased decisions.

Doesnt bother me in the least. How many coaching hires have I made? How many has he? He's done a pretty damn good job in the past, probably why we are paying him nearly 2M a year.

I've seen nothing to indicate DW isn't light years ahead of Currie as an AD. If he goes with Elliot, after reading about his history with him, I'll trust that there's a very good reason.

There's finally an AD on the job I have some confidence in.

In this case, though, if that crap hit the media first, what else could UT do?

I have a feeling Franklin falls through. It seems like it would be done now otherwise.

I wouldn’t be so sure. Given the uncertainty we are in with the penalties, the final agreement terms and how they are worded is going to mean a lot in my opinion. I know that many gloss over this stage as “just the lawyer part,” but this part is what makes/breaks many deals when there is any inkling of skepticism. So, if I’m Franklin’s counsel, I need to check the contract from every angle to make sure my client has financial and career security/options should Tennessee get hit hard with penalties. And if you’re Tennessee, you’re trying to be accommodating but also wary of getting backed into a corner with an absurd sweetheart deal. I’m sure this is everyone’s top priority, but it takes time, especially when novel provisions are involved outside the general form contract

One other item: Some journalists picked up from this thread that our top candidate is not a Sexton client. They’ve twisted that to say DW will not talk to Sexton clients. That is not true. You don’t succeed as an AD and rule out top agents. Too many things are getting twisted.

Nothing about James Franklin says integrity. He comes off as a complete ass. Not looking forward to this hire.

Well I have to agree to disagree on this one then. Sorry, but you're going to have a hard time selling this hire to me knowing he's the second person we looked at or even interviewed after we just rolled the dice on a coordinator coming in here and learning on the job. And I get it, "Elliott is no Pruitt", but his experience is. This is not a time, nor a place to come in and learn by getting your hands dirty.
