Here is why Jones was hired
On December 16, 2009, Jones was named head coach at the University of Cincinnati.[1] He replaced Brian Kelly, who left to become head coach at Notre Dame.[3] Jones had previously replaced Kelly at Central Michigan.
Jones has led the Bearcats to records of 4-8 in 2010 and 10-3 in 2011, including a Big East championship, a Liberty Bowl victory (31-24 over Vanderbilt), and he was named Big East Coach of the Year. Also in 2011, Cincinnati was the only program to win both its conference championship as well as the league's team academic award. He led them to an academic award.
I can't understand why anyone would go with Jones when Davis is out there. Someone will hire him and they will win.
I think he's a really good guy. I've met him a few times
and he's very personable and approachable. I've had season tickets at UC for 5
years now. He's a lot nicer guy than Brian Kelly or Mark Dantonio. That said, I
dont think he's as good a coach as either. Certainly not as good as Kelly.
I think overall he's a bad fit for Tennessee to be honest. He'll bring a
totally different and very complex offense to Tennessee. I think that will mean
he'll want to bring the majority of his staff with him and that will be a major
issue from a recruiting standpoint. He's stated many times how much loyalty he
feels towards his staff. He tries hard in recruiting but honestly he doesn't
have any good recruiters on his staff. His best recruiter was Kerry Coombs and
he left last year to take the DB coaching job at Ohio State.
One issue
will be at the QB spot. 3 of the 4 guys that "could" be on the roster next year
dont fit into his offense at all. Peterman might fit but Bray, Worley and
Ferguson wont.
His defenses, particularly pass defense has been a major
problem. His defensive coordinator is John Jancek who was LB's coach I believe
at UGA a few years ago before he was fired.
The other concern I have
besides recruiting is he's not proven he can built up a program. He's inherited
two good situations at CMU and Cincinnati, and at Tennessee its not going to be
a good situation. His teams will be behind most of the SEC from a talent
standpoint. So can he build a program is a huge question mark.
I like
him and I'll support him for sure. He deserves a chance, but I dont expect it to
turn out well.
Not about giving him a chance. Just as with Dooley, his future has been written and so has the Vols. Mediocrity for years and years to come.
I am so underwhelmed by this hire I cannot put it into words.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Butch Jones will be named the 24th head coach of the Tennessee Volunteer football program. He will be introduced today at a 2:30 p.m. press conference to be held in the Peyton Manning locker room at Neyland Stadium.
Jones comes to the Vols after coaching at the University of Cincinnati the last three years, where he led the Bearcats to two conference championships . In each of the last two seasons, he has been honored as the BIG EAST Coach of the Year. In six seasons as a head coach, he has led his teams to four conference titles.
More information to come shortly.
I've never said this before, but Hart and Cheek have to go. This is ridiculous. Dooley all over again. I'm still going to wear orange and support the Vols, because it's my school, not Dave Hart's and/or Jimmy Cheek's. However, I have never been this down about Tennessee football. I can't even believe this. It would be fantastic if Jones declined the offer, but there is no way in hell he picks Colorado over Tennessee. Tragic.
Now I know how the folks on the Titantic felt. Started off on top of the world. Now the ship has a big hole in it, is sinking fast and doesn't have enough life boats.
Butch may be a good coach but his is not what we need now. We need a name that can restore pride in our University!
