I'm obviously not a Florida fan but Donovan has 3 Final Four appearances and 2 National titles...When you see any Top 5 or Top 10 coaches lists you will usually see Jim Calhoun or Jim Boeheim listed...Now, I have no idea if Donovan will ever win another National Title or not...He only has 16 years in the game but compared to Calhoun's (38 yrs 3 FFs & 2 NTs) and Boeheim's (34 yrs 3 FFs & 1 NT) numbers how can you leave him off the list??....I'm thinking National Titles would be an important benchmark to use ??...If those 2 National Titles were "aberrations" as one poster pointed out, then I sure would like to see Tennessee have an aberration or two...Oh, and Donovan has as many titles as Roy Williams has and Williams routinely has better material to work with....
What I'm saying is, with Donovan's numbers in relation to other very successful coaches, how can anyone just dismiss what he has done as "aberrations" or "luck"??..Winning 1 title is hard enough (Self 1 FF & 1 NT in 17 yrs of coaching) or even Izzo ( 6 FFs & 1 NT in 15 yrs of coaching) let alone back-to-back titles...He didn't just roll the balls out in practice and then just let the players do their thing in the games...
Do I think Donovan is a Top 5 coach right now ??....Do I think he is a better coach than say a Jay Wright ??...No on both counts...But for those two seasons he was pretty damn good...
