Tough call. Cal's title game team had some awful fortune in losing the title. MSU won in what I'd call a down field.

Cal is clearly the better recruiter and izzo the better college coach. Combined, I take Izzo, but this KY team as juniors would kill that Cleaves led squad.

Izzo can thank playing his regional final in Auburn Hills and a Kenyon Martin broken leg for his national title. You'd be playing seniors and juniors against freshmen in the given scenario.

You did not compare pearl at 50 to calhoun at 50...also how is our last loss not close to a final four? Are you joking? What about losing to odens buckeyes?

I said he has been close once. Please read my post.

That same loss we blew a 20-point lead. Of course you will say that the refs cost us the game, but whatever.

I just looked up Calhoun's career. I said you would have been crazy if you could have guarenteed two national titles from him back in about 1993. To say a coach is going to win two national titles after he has never been to the Final Four is crazy. With Boeheim and Williams, if you made that prediction before they won a title, you could at least say they have made it before to the Final Four and some. You cannot say the same for Pearl.

Since he has changed his style I think he will be more successful at developing talent.

With that said, of all the players that he has recruited, none are playing NBA ball and only one ( I believe ) are playing pro ball of any sort.

Not really a great track record.

While Pearl did not recruit him, C.J. Watson is a productive NBA PG.

Well, there is always going to be situations like Cincy's, you play who is in front of you...what happened to Martin should not diminish what MSU did.

Agree. If the Vols had beaten MSU, I don't think anyone would be complaining that Kalin Lucas wasn't playing.

I didn't say it did. However, the fact remains that the team that was clearly the best in the '99-'00 season didn't get its shot.

I understand that, but still. If MSU loses tomorrow night, are we going to say the same thing since they didn't have Lucas?

Cal certainly didn't have any problem absolutely embarrassing Izzo in the Sweet 16 in '08.

Ok,not what I asked. Your example is one of Cal's best teams versus one of Izzo's weakest teams, which has absolutely nothing to do with the question that i asked you.

Fair. You never would have predicted calhouns success. I did not say pearl will be as successful as williams. I think he will compare favorably to calhoun. I predicted two final fours in the next decade with 1 giving him a nt...I think he will have top 5 attendance, top 5 recruiting classes and top 10 results for the next 10 years

Michigan State is a five seed. Their performance over the course of the season in no way indicates they were a top 10 team, let alone the best.

I understand what you are saying. But you really can't predict the future that far ahead. What if Coach K retires after this year and Duke hires Pearl? What if Pearl pays thousands to recruits over the years and gets suspended? What if he has a heart attack? What if we have a new AD who puts all effort into football? There are too many variables to predict the future that far away. You could say "I think Pearl will lead us to a national title one day." But you can't make predictions like that.

You are right. My bad. But my point being you can't go back and have injury what-ifs like that in my opinion. Yeah, that Cincy team was good. But maybe they go Kansas and lose in the 2nd round. Who knows?

Absurd predictions are MHF's specialty.

I think Pearl is low there. From a purely coaching(recruiting, game-planning, motivating) standpoint he's probably top 15.

But for all the Calipari love here, how do you explain the collapse against Kansas, and how do you explain him allowing what happened against WVU to happen? If you look at the entire package he's certainly a great coach, but they had every opportunity to win that WVU game and he just kept letting them jack up threes. The collapse against Kansas was maybe the greatest title game choke of all time. It was worse than Webber's flub, because Memphis had to make a multitude of mistakes to allow what happened to happen, Webber just made one. Calipari is not even in Izzo's or K's league.

He's also indisputably dirty, and Kentucky(as much as I hate them) is better than his corrupt ass. They are going to regret allowing his stink to get on their program, and most of them know it. Just let him have one or two bad seasons and all the pent up angst they feel about him leading their program is going to explode.

you only have to look at Pearls record and see what a crock this is.....slow news days bring on this crap.

I really don't understand how 20-25 wins at UWM is impressive overall.

That's the problem with looking at overall winning percentages for coaches. Seeing Mark Few at or near the top of the list for active coaches shows that. Comparing wins in the WCC or the Horizon to those in the Big East or ACC is like comparing being mayor of Maryville to being President.
