Coaching Rankings.

I know what you are saying. I totally forgot about Howland and I'm ashamed. That is my fault. I will edit that. He should be over Stevens easy.

But I really love what Stevens has done. Maybe it's a little bit from the FF, but his in-game coaching is absolutely solid. I was impressed watching his team play.

At this point, I wouldn't consider him over Pearl.

Look, here's the reason you don't want Calipari as a coach.

I am pretty good at recognizing and it's pretty plain to see that Calipari is a fake, fraud and phony. Disingenuous coaches don't bother me, it's part of the game. You're not interested in a job, but really are....blah, blah. Bruce Pearl, Nick Saban, Lane Kiffin, etc. are disingenuous and who cares, really? I don't care if Pearl cheated on his wife, Pitino screwed a woman on a restaurant table (though classic) or Huggins got a DUI unless it actually affects me.

However, it would bother me if the coach:

-told everyone he was "meditating" on his job, while secretly seeing if he could shore up already committed and signed recruits for his new job

-playing the pious do-gooder, while having the most notorious bag man (the Nike exec/agent sitting a few rows behind the UK bench) since Sam Gilbert delivering me shady recruits that can barely read and have academic records so suspect the local schools wouldn't touch them

-despite all the glitz, actually sucks as a game day coach, noted by the fact that Memphis did nothing until the big dogs left CUSA and the panic attacks during the tournament when facing an actual challenge. The lack of coaching in the final 10 minutes of the WVU was a debacle any 6th grade girls coach could have avoided, or at least without looking clueless on the sidelines.

-left a trail of NCAA violations and pissed off fans.

There's so much more, but anyone who puts Cal as #1 is a bonified idiot. He's a (mirage of a) short time solution with long term problems. There's not a chance I would want him ruining my program.

Indeed.

Agree with some points and am not a Cal fan, but it's hard to argue that he ruined Memphis, which he brought back from the abyss.

Editorial question: what is a bonified idiot?

That is yet to be seen if it was abberation. That is opinion as of now. I'm saying if you line up winning percentages, titles, recruiting, nba players, sec titles, things that are facts. There is no way you can't say he isn't a top 5 active coach.

I agree that it is simply inconceivable that I wouldn't be able to utter the words "Billy Donovan is not a top 5 active coach."

Nice triple negative.

Well, I would link CatsPause, but I think you know its notoriety.

I also think Memphis was very lucky to get Pastner or that situation could have nose-dived quickly the way Cal left.

* Bone Of Fived.

Explain to me why Huggins, Boeheim, and Self are better than Donovan. You have to have reasons.

1) Huggins has taken 2 different schools to the Final Four (each in the third year on the job).
2) Boeheim has made the NCAA's 27 times with 11 Sweet Sixteens, 1 Elite Eight, 3 Final Fours and a national title. Consistency puts him here.
3) Self has a national title with 7 trips to at least the second weekend of the tournament or beyond. He has also taken three different schools to the tournament.

Maybe I've seen too much of Pearl. Sometimes if you watch too much of something, you don't fully appreciate it. But we'll agree to disagree.

Stevens, and it's not close. Dan Monson got Gonzaga deeper into the tournament than Few has. Mark Few's alleged genius is one of the great frauds in college basketball. He's a good coach who has dominated a mediocre league, nothing more. Xavier and Butler have accomplished more the Gonzaga in the last decade. They aren't even the model mid major, as people try to portray them.

I really enjoyed watching St. Mary's upstage them in both their conference Tournament and the NCAA's.

So hypothetically, if you were hiring a coach you wouldnt look at the candidates resumes when making your choice? You would only look at recent accomplishments?

Also, are you trying to say that Kentucky wouldnt have been as good as they were with Coach K or Izzo at the helm?

Im pretty sure both of these coaches are in the Final 4 right now with less talent than Cal had this year......[/QUOTE]

Yes, that is precisely what I'm saying.

I'm pretty sure both Duke and Michigan State made the NCAA tournament last year. I'm pretty sure Kentucky was a 4th seed in the NIT.

We are talkin about this year, not last. Either way your statement regarding last year is irrelevant since Cal wasnt the coach at kentucky last year. Thanks for making yourself look even dumber.......

Agreed, Pastner has done a fine job here and so far the city backs him. It could have got real ugly quick but you have to give the man credit for the job he did for a first year coach.

The only one that could go over Donovan is Boeheim. Donovan has more final fours in less years than Huggins. Self has had one championship and not much else. Donovan still has more championships and the same amount of Final Fours in less years. Alot less. And may I remind you of all those great teams Florida put out before Donovan got there? (Yeah Kruger got a final four) but other than that were one of the worst basketball programs in the SEC.

But Cal had a hand in Pastner being his successor.
