I wouldn’t expect many player announcements for the next few days. One, many are waiting to see what they might be offered in the draft which creates another problem. Two, because of that, schools don’t know how much money they have available. For instance, a guy like Halvorsen could go to the draft and free up money or Burns could come to campus and take money. Coaches have a good idea, but you never really know until after the draft. Consequently, schools have to wait and see how much money they have to offer someone like Kessler and he’s waiting to see how much he’s offered in the draft. It creates a brutal cycle.

Yes. The draft is too late. It’s not fair to the college coaches or kids. Needs to be moved back up.

Out of curiosity…

Is there a specific reason for the draft being pushed back this year? I vaguely recall it being during the college baseball postseason or CWS. Is there a happy medium during June-July?

MLB wanted it during the All-Star Festivities and try and create more of an NFL type draft atmosphere.…..MLB is stupid again!

I think MLB is trying to incorporate it with the All Star game to get more eyes on it and try to gain in popularity. I think doing it in conjunction with Omaha would serve that purpose even more. It def needs to be addressed because there is to many people in limbo right now. Recruiting transfers is pretty much in limbo because coaches have no clue what kind of scholarship money they will have.

The problem with the MLB draft and why it will never have huge ”audience” numbers is the fact that the top picks may take 3-5 years to reach the majors, if ever and may not even be with team they got drafted by. In the NFL, they play immediately and have a huge impact on the make-up of that team……..

Yeah. I think they would be better served doing it in conjunction with Omaha. Would help grow the college game, which will help the draft become more popular. MLB needs to work better with collegiate game. They are using it as a feeder system anyway.

The NIL stuff going on now is gonna help college baseball, maybe more than any other sport, it’s gonna make college more attractive for the guys drafted in rounds 3-5. JMO.

Thanks for your answers, @OldTimer and @Volsbaseballfan1. So essentially the MLB is attempting to mimic other professional leagues in order increase its popularity? What a bad misstep and selfish move. Manfred continues to step his foot in it.

I hope they move it earlier next year.

Major League Baseball is soooooooooo out of step…it’s almost like boxing.

I’ve never seen a commissioner who hates the sport he is in charge of more than Rob Manfred. Just about every decision he has made has been antithetical to the spirit of the game. He is also very out of touch with what actual changes fans/players want to see.

Very much so. It’s been lost in the wilderness for so long. So many WTH moves. I think Manfred is the worst commissioner of all the professional leagues. I much prefer college baseball over MLB.

I also think you make a great point with the NIL. I bet this coupled with transfers and fewer MiLB teams will make the college baseball route more appealing.

You don’t get to there if you don’t like baseball, but I agree, it’s tone deaf and back in the day we called it skimming. They have the cheapest labor pool known to man. They like it like that, hold onto it with all their might, but it’s gonna change, it’s inevitable.

Ripping affiliated ball out of over 40 communities is not the way to grow the sport, IMO. Unfortunately I think what all was going on with covid last year kept the spotlight from shining on what MLB was doing.

I haven’t been this disinterested in MLB since the strike of 96. Corporate absentee owners like Liberty Media for the Braves also hurt the game since the team is
tsimply another line item on their balance sheet. I hope college sports aren’t ruined by the transfer portal. Commitments are now essentially for one year since there’s no penalty for quitting. Hardship cases should have always been granted transfers but now I fear kids will leave versus working harder to earn their position. What‘s it teaching our kids to quit at the first sign of adversity? I hope college sports don‘t turn into free agency on steroids.
