Coming after Vitello

You are one great poster but honestly you are making way too many assumptions here.

My assumption is TV knows exactly what he needs to get to Omaha regularly and win multiple Natty titles and he knows A&M gives him a much better shot at that over any of the things you think he needs to stay.

the truth is neither of us know what TV really wants. I have said a number of times from a pure baseball winning standpoint it’s a no brainer for him to leave for A&M. For Tenn sake I hope he has a personal off the field reason to stay here.

It’s going to be interesting for sure when the season concludes…..

I give CTV a 90% chance of being UT’s head ball coach in 2022 and I’m not a gambling man so no bets for me

Lol

Sounds like I bet 10$ and you pay me 90$

Then I’m only down 10 after my last lost

Tell us what he needs that AM offers and we don’t. Maybe I’m simple minded but from the 2018-2023 (as 2022-23 stand today) classes he’s been out recruited 1x by AM and most years aren’t even close. He’s not having trouble attracting comparable to better talent despite subpar facilities, smaller/harder recruiting base, recent futility etc. I don’t know the guy personally, and doubt you do either, so I think it’s unfair for either to try and decipher what drives him. However, while we’re doing it TV truly strikes me as a grinder/underdog/overachiever/chip on the shoulder guy that’s not driven by glitz, glamour, fame or money. He’s achieving great things at an afterthought baseball school who took a chance on him when his own Alma mater wouldn’t just a year before. He may not think like me (however we’re drawing our own conclusions so I feel he does), I would ask myself would TAMU have hired me in June 2017 had they fired Childress then? The answer is very likely no; they would’ve been too arrogant to stoop to hiring an assistant because we’re TAMU. They would be doing nothing but buying him from the place that believed in him from the get go because they think they can.

I’ll say this I do know TV to some degree and yes he is a grinder hard working son of a gun but he does have some flash for glitz and glamor:

I recall reading that AD White, when Plowman first phoned him said: "Tennessee, huh? I could win championships there." And they then sealed the deal for him. Now he has his best opportunity to win a signficant and visible championship, and possibly many more with a relatively minor investment (relative to football and basketball salaries and facilities). Something tells me he's doing everything in his power to keep Vitello. For his part, Vitello has never said he wants something that appears unaffordable or is unreasonable, and he hasn't acted that way at all. For all those reasons, I'm going to be positive that he will be retained.

So how does one get to know (or why would they want to get to know) one they openly despise in the way they go about building a program?

I have just had the opportunity to be around him at times. Same way I am around a lot of people I admire a lot but don’t agree with all of their methods.

I know some think he's cuckoo, but Basilio has some stuff about CTV on his blog today. Some highlights:

-Believes CTV is A&M's third choice behind Tadlock and Schlossnagle. Tadlock is off the board.
-Jimmy Sexton is Vitello's new agent. He will encourage CTV to listen to all offers until Tenn comes back with a suitable offer for him and staff as well as for LNS.
-Tony has no interest in playing in the Smokies new park. He believes college baseball belongs on campus.
-3 of the top 5 boosters are involved in making sure Tony stays in Knoxville, including Peyton Manning.
-Says Tenn will have to commit around $30 million for stadium upgrades plus the funds for Tony and his staff.
-He's not worried right now because he thinks the right people are involved to make it happen.
-CTV likes Knoxville and doesn't think he wants to leave, but will Tenn give him a reason to leave?
-Will Tenn belly up to the bar to make the necessary changes to field a 21st century, credible SEC program?

Interesting stuff.

And I gotta believe that most of this is pretty accurate......

It's certainly going to be an eventful month for Tennessee baseball (both on and off the field).

I'm now focusing on enjoying our team's postseason run for however long it lasts.

Let's go pack LNS for the Knoxville Regional (and Super Regional)!

I’m usually one of those people that cracks on Basilio for being a nut, but just this once I hope to god he knows what he is talking about. Keeping CTV would be the biggest win Tennessee fans have had in who knows how long…

Recently built beautiful super baseball stadiums around the SEC have cost in the 60 million range, so at first glance, 30 million for upgrades might seem about right. But it feels high to me just to do what Vitello is said to want.

Baseball America discusses possible candidates for A&M baseball job

Maybe some slight reason for optimism in this article.

"However, no sitting SEC coach has been hired away since 2005."
And that was Cohen going home and to one of the most tradition rich and fan supported programs in college baseball. That was equivalent to Bear Bryant leaving for Bama. When Mississippi State calls, you listen; and if you’re an alum you’re on a plane before the AD is done talking.

Thanks for posting that... I could not remember which coach switched. I was probably enjoying watching the BaseVols storm through Atlanta on their way to Omaha that season.

Cohen at Kentucky was insane.
It was a constant stream of relief pitchers. He had odd theories.

This was a good listen. Kendall Rogers said he doesn’t think Vitello would be a top candidate at LSU, but that he knows Vitello is a candidate at TAMU. He also has changed his tune slightly and has said that it’s no guarantee Tony would leave for TAMU if offered the job.

He says Tony is his own guy, moves to the beat of his own drum, and he thinks all the speculation that Tony would bolt the second another job opens might actually frustrate Tony and compel him to stay in Knoxville.

Some reason for optimism at least.

They actually have the season wrong unless there were 2 who have left. Cohen left UK after the 2008 season to go to MS State. I can’t think of who would’ve left in 2005.

Edit: Pat McMahon left MS State for UF in 2001. That write up is all kinds of jacked up. Journalism in 2021 🤷‍♂️
