Coming after Vitello

East for us to say throw money at him

Coming off the COVID craziness where coaches across America were asked to take pay cuts because of next to no revenue coming in

Tennessee will likely pay assistant football coaches and even possibly the former head coach not to work. Baseball only produced any revenue the last few weeks and that would not even come close to paying the bills.

There may be boosters stepping up. We don’t know as they’re only rumors; but as state employees the AD, chancellor and president owe a legal duty to be fiscally responsible. Can you pay Tony V more money than coaches with national and conference titles? If you are then you are basically negotiating against yourself. What if you give a coach to 3 money and then he succeeds. Will the coach be angered when you don’t give him an even bigger raise that you can’t afford?
Not paying Tee and they’re too dug in to pay Pruitt. That block party scene is the beginning of a new dynamic. You pay him because he’s the type that wins titles...can’t hire them afterwards. White values other programs and believes they contribute to an overall winning environment.

In the four seasons TV has been here have we seen any regression?
No , zero.
He's in the same conference, same state as Corbin.
Pay the man and his assistants, upgrade the facilities. Whatever it takes to compete. If TV leaves this season for any job other than LSU shame on Tenn.
I don't believe he's going anywhere .
FYI I did not have lunch with White, nor am I an insider.
Just another keyboard warrior like everyone else in here posting.

Your passion is infectious.

Yesterday I was fairly confident in our retention. Now @EZE has me ready to jump off a bridge

I hear more and more rumblings that it's probably already done. I was talking to a friend here in West TN this morning who has ties to Knoxville, and he believes that both sides have privately agreed and an announcement will be made later.

i think if LSU hires someone before the Tennessee is knocked out, he's a lock to stay. If LSU is still searching come time Tennessee is eliminated, it might be time to look back at this season fondly because he gone

Vitello isn't getting Corbin money from anyone, but it's not unrealistic to think 1mil to 1.5 mil range. I get tired of the business argument because while it's true, we're not talking about a 10mil/year football coach. The figure is 500k-1mil tacked onto his current salary. That's NOTHING to this university. Negotiate the power bill, use a different insurance provider, admit 30 more out of state students if you really need to scrape up the cash. It's a joke. Better yet, stop making $hitty decisions on the football side so you can increase revenue. Maybe we can reduce some spend by not being so political with contract awards for improvements? The little amount of money in question for TV's contract is there if we want it. It's so hard, but it's so easy.

I'll say another thing - as a fan it's our job to be emotional. It's our job to want to sit on the couch and not worry about the pennies here and the pennies there to put a product on the field. Why? Because we have fundraisers who have relationships with donors and Athletic Directors and a whole staff of people hired to do whatever it takes to win championships. So yeah - I'm a little emotional and I love our coach. Put some freaking solar panels on the roof of our buildings.

Damn…get this man a wall to run through!!

Also, just like Barnes' situation, people have to understand that timing and the market are huge in these situations. There are times when you have to pay a premium to keep good talent. It all pays for itself. The baseball program will only start making more money from here on out, so Vitello is basically generating his own salary increase.

Baseball doesn’t make money anywhere but a few schools in the country. We will never make money on it until we spend the money to get a big ass stadium. But it’s obvious that if we do spend the money to build it.. they will come.

So, you are saying he's staying or some ******* is going to take him away?

If UT and CTV had an agreement, it would be announced. Pronto.

Butchna and I rarely agree on anything, but this is well stated. The better off our programs as a whole are the more likely other programs (including football) will succeed. Just look at the environment on campus this past weekend. If you can continue to breed success, it will bleed over into the rest of the athletic department.

Taking into consideration that CV's new agent is Jimmy Sexton, I'm not surprised that there's no official announcement yet.

Having said that, I'm still not concerned.

You put a solid offer on the table for him and you promise, in writing, to get him to Corbin money over the next 2 or 3 years IF the program continues to be one of the best in the SEC.
CTV has to have some skin in the game IMO.

If LSU is dumb enough to pay him as much as the best coach in college baseball right now, that is on them. We should not be that dumb. He is a fourth year head coach.

So, in our hypothetical negotiations, you would counter offer him significantly less money than a traditional powerhouse is offering him RIGHT NOW, and who RIGHT NOW has the facilities he covets, telling him he still needs to prove his worth for Corbin money. IOWs, you are counting on HIS emotional connection to UT to get him to sign, and painting your measly counter offer as 1) what he 'deserves', and 2) a necessary bulwark against an emotional fanbase. Glad you aren't the AD.

Silly hypothetical, but whatever makes you feel good about the situation.

Also, I just read the Knox News article again for the sources indicating that Vitello will be paid, and they list Corbin at 1.239 million based on tax records. I would guess that Vitello's new deal will be close to that.

Total package is above 2 mill I believe.
