Coming after Vitello

Their baseball facilities (including, but not limited to, Swayze) far exceed ours. If you dont believe me, ask any senior level traveling coach within Dulin's or any of the coaches at one of AAA HS powers here in Shelby County.

I wasn’t saying you were wrong- just asking a question. But being one of the best in the country and being better than ours are totally different things.

The stadium’s history doesn’t suggest that it would be much better if $35 million was pumped into LNS and other facilities.

It’s a good stadium but not one of the best imo without the students. The students is what makes that stadium if that makes sense
Didn't they just set the NCAA record for attendance in a 3-gm series in their super with Notre Dame? What kind of student presence was there in mid-June? School's been out for 5-6 weeks.

We were talking about Ole Miss.

As to MSU though, many alumni are within a 2.5 hour radius. I have a friend in Memphis who goes to a lot of games. I can’t do that at UT.

Yea miss state and miss facilities are night and day different imo

and as strange as it might sound liked MSU a lot more before the renovations. The outfield areas had more “character” then and felt less cooperate to me

Maybe all this insiders posting on these forums can pull the big money men together at Calhoun's and iron out a " deal he can't refuse" ;)
I mean there seems to be posters in here that know all these cats. Apperantly playing golf and having dinner with these movers and shakers 2/3 times a week.
Y'all need to get it done. ;)

CTV will get an offer with a sizable increase for himself and his assistants. The ball will be in his court to accept or play the market.
The idea that he deserves Corbin money is just emotion from the fans.
Improvements will be made to facilities and seating expanded.
Like I’ve said before, it’s up to him if he wants to stay or go somewhere he thinks he can get a better offer.

I get a sense that you think good baseball coaches are a dime a dozen. Do you believe that or are you hesitant to pay Tony because baseball is not a traditional money maker? Other reasons?

I agree and nothing you said is ground breaking news.
It's what normally happens in these situations. I seriously doubt anyone posting in sports forums are involved in any way with these decisions or negotiations.

I am more responding to the “pay him whatever” crowd. CTV has to be as committed to staying as we are to keeping him.

I hear that and completely agree. I know we can't give him a blank check, but Tony needs to be paid like a top 10 coach. He needs to be top 3 in the SEC. I don't know exactly what that translates to, but we're going to have to revisit in 4-5 years anyway. That's my opinion on the matter.

Looking back, maybe bump the base salary a touch, but I posted this in the Vitello's Contract Thread...

"Here’s my offer to CTV with UT’s money…

$1 million flat salary with $150k raises built into the contract term every 4 years. Bonus structure is $30k for regional, additional $20k if hosting, $50k super regional, $75k getting to Omaha, $150k winning it all - bonuses are stackable. "

If he had the setup outlined above he'd make $1.175mil this season with another $150k on the line. Now that we're here in Omaha and after the Super Regional crowd I'm thinking that should be closer to $1.5 with salary + incentives.

The idea that he deserves Corbin money is just emotion from the fans.

"Deserves got nothin to do with it." William Munny (Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven)

Let's play What If:

What if CTV's agent produces and offer sheet from - say - LSU, and it is Corbin money. What does White and donors do then? Do they say: "You don't deserve Corbin money!" and let him go? Or do they think the way William Munny thinks, not to mention the thought of a possible emotional fan revolt if they lose him, and counter the offer with Corbin money? What would you do?

I heard that DW initially nixed the idea of a block party saying there wasn’t enough time to pull it off. TV told him to make it happen. Lol. I don’t know if Tennessee could match any offer out there for him, but I believe they’re going to do what they can otherwise to make him happy.

East for us to say throw money at him

Coming off the COVID craziness where coaches across America were asked to take pay cuts because of next to no revenue coming in

Tennessee will likely pay assistant football coaches and even possibly the former head coach not to work. Baseball only produced any revenue the last few weeks and that would not even come close to paying the bills.

There may be boosters stepping up. We don’t know as they’re only rumors; but as state employees the AD, chancellor and president owe a legal duty to be fiscally responsible. Can you pay Tony V more money than coaches with national and conference titles? If you are then you are basically negotiating against yourself. What if you give a coach to 3 money and then he succeeds. Will the coach be angered when you don’t give him an even bigger raise that you can’t afford?

You put a solid offer on the table for him and you promise, in writing, to get him to Corbin money over the next 2 or 3 years IF the program continues to be one of the best in the SEC.
CTV has to have some skin in the game IMO.

If LSU is dumb enough to pay him as much as the best coach in college baseball right now, that is on them. We should not be that dumb. He is a fourth year head coach.

Well Stated.
Emotions are running high right now and most fans do not understand that it truly is a business that has to be run with state dollars.

it's not really a rumor anymore. Many local media guys have said that boosters are throwing money at the baseball program to keep Vitello right now. I wouldn't be surprised if he does become the highest paid coach in the country, if not here then somewhere else.

I'm not concerned about CV leaving for another program.

Danny White at his presser last week:

"I’m committed to whatever our baseball coach tells me gives us the best opportunity to continue to recruit and develop players at a really high level...
“We talk about wanting a better facility and improving things,” White said while discussing the baseball program. “I’m a competitor. I want to do that in every sport we have. But we are the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament right now, so that committee puts us as the No. 3 team in the country. That’s pretty good. So I’m going to listen to the person responsible for putting us in that position, in Tony Vitello.”

That's good enough for me.

Tennessee needs TV. TV does not need Tennessee.

Good.
Tennessee needs TV. TV does not need Tennessee.

But at what cost? Like I’ve been saying, if Coach wants to stay he will stay because he will get a very good new contract. He will not get a contract next year that makes him the highest paid Coach in the country. He has to want to stay.

In the four seasons TV has been here have we seen any regression?
No , zero.
He's in the same conference, same state as Corbin.
Pay the man and his assistants, upgrade the facilities. Whatever it takes to compete. If TV leaves this season for any job other than LSU shame on Tenn.
I don't believe he's going anywhere .
FYI I did not have lunch with White, nor am I an insider.
Just another keyboard warrior like everyone else in here posting.

Tony V will be in knoxville along time. Our AD is going to secure him, Tony V loves it here! Better days are headed to knoxville all around including football. No doubt our fans love all things Vol, but Football will always be king and we will get back to the playing at the highest level competitively. No fans support their team even through the down times better than Tennessee fans. We're hungry and we are here to stay!!!! GBO!!!!!

Vitello isn't getting Corbin money from anyone, but it's not unrealistic to think 1mil to 1.5 mil range. I get tired of the business argument because while it's true, we're not talking about a 10mil/year football coach. The figure is 500k-1mil tacked onto his current salary. That's NOTHING to this university. Negotiate the power bill, use a different insurance provider, admit 30 more out of state students if you really need to scrape up the cash. It's a joke. Better yet, stop making $hitty decisions on the football side so you can increase revenue. Maybe we can reduce some spend by not being so political with contract awards for improvements? The little amount of money in question for TV's contract is there if we want it. It's so hard, but it's so easy.

I'll say another thing - as a fan it's our job to be emotional. It's our job to want to sit on the couch and not worry about the pennies here and the pennies there to put a product on the field. Why? Because we have fundraisers who have relationships with donors and Athletic Directors and a whole staff of people hired to do whatever it takes to win championships. So yeah - I'm a little emotional and I love our coach. Put some freaking solar panels on the roof of our buildings.
