Coming after Vitello

But at what cost? Like I’ve been saying, if Coach wants to stay he will stay because he will get a very good new contract. He will not get a contract next year that makes him the highest paid Coach in the country. He has to want to stay.
Our offer has to overcompensate for the state of our program. We are selling him an idea. Other schools don’t have to do that.

Well, whatever the offer is to date, it must not be enough…because he hasn’t accepted it. More concerning is that there doesn’t appear to be a counteroffer.

Why would he accept any offer before Omaha plays out? He may win the whole thing. If he does, his value goes up. He's playing it smart.

There has been no offer to accept yet because Tony asked not to start any negotiations until after the season is over. The only thing he's focused on right now is getting the team ready for Omaha.

We would have to quadruple his salary to make him the highest paid coach in the country - that title belongs to Tim Corbin who makes $2.3M at Vandy. That isn't going to happen. 1.2-1.4M will be as high as UT goes IMO

He's certainly improved it considerably.

He also inherited a clean program with no NCAA problems, no APR problems and some good kids from Serrano.

I can sure appreciate him handling over a clean program. That is HUGELY important, in my book. I wish Pearl and Pruitt would have done that. And no doubt about the good kids.

But Serrano's record after 6 years of 500 ball was 27-25. In only 3 complete seasons in four years under CTV, we are in Omaha with 50 wins, SEC East champs, and a #3 NCAA tournament seeding. Improved it considerably is putting it mildly. It's Saban-esque.

"Improved it considerably" seems a very lackluster way of putting it. In the 10 years before CTV arrived, the two coaches we had never had a winning SEC record, and only had a winning overall record 4 times.

Year 4 with CTV and we're in Omaha. That's beyond considerable improvement. That's complete revitalization and turnaround of the program to national prominence.

But you said the state of our progam deserves over compensation.

Exactly what is it about the state of our program that demands over compensation?

Wait…you are saying that CTV is not “sold” on our program? It has been his program fir 4 years.
As our useless POTUS would say…”Come On Man!!”

I can't argue with any of that.

But what problems with the state of the program demand over compensation?

Not on paper, but make no mistake, numbers are being discussed with his agent.

We play in a high school stadium and the sport has received about as much support as the chess team from the university.

I sure hope Mike White can remove the stench of over a decade-and-a-half of incompetent boobs in the UT AD. It’s like those imbeciles just expected everything to run itself.

txbo, you've got me confused with another poster, orange parmejohn. He said overcompensate. But I am helping him make his point as well as mine with my posts.

You are correct that the program was not a dumpster fire when CTV took it over, and it was a clean program with some talent and good kids in it. But it was mired in mediocrity in terms of wins/losses.

Can you think of another coach in the college baseball world who took a mediocre program with subpar facilities and amenities this far this fast? That is Sabanesqe, i.e. - the sign of someone who will make us a perennial national power. I agree with those who think he should be overcompensated to keep him here, if being a perennial power is what we want.

I not only agree with what a wonderful job he's done in a short time, I'd go one step further and say had he not been cheated out of last year by covid, the results could have been even more remarkable. Last year's squad had potential to be even better than this year, assuming of course they stay healthy. Zack Daniel, Leath, Crochet, etc. That was year 3. This is really year 3+.... And we're not done. A coach that takes this team to Omaha is worth a lot. A coach that takes this team to the CWS Final is worth even more. A coach that wins a CWS is worth even more than that.... And I honestly believe our chances are as good as any.

If that performance deserves over compensation, then I would agree that he's earned it.

But that's not what was said. He said Vitello deserves over compensation beacuse of the state of the program. That suggests that there are some additional challenges or roadblocks. The Heupel and White contracts are good examples of over compensation for that reason. And I just don't see that as the case with baseball. Sure the stadium needs updated... but that's not going to stop him from winning. He's already proved that.
