Coming after Vitello

Also, what are the odds of this happening to Tennessee twice? Mega prestigious dream job opens up at a perfect time for our coach to dip out on us.

Its pretty wild...but.

I will say this as someone that used to work in college administration with/under 3 current P5 AD's, the situation/environment over the last 2 decades at Tennessee have made the conditions ripe for other schools to pick off good head coaches at UT. Most AD's have their wish list for a coaching replacement but they also survey the landscape of college athletics and say who is holding a job at an environment where the AD is an *******, the boosters are crazy, there's an administrative change coming in either the AD/President's Office that might make someone otherwise unwilling to move think twice about it. A lot of those scenarios have been in play at Tennessee in recent memory.

pretty fair assessment. our AD now seems competent but the mistakes of years past can't be made up for in 6 months.

Honest question: is a coach more likely to win titles at LSU than at Tennessee?

That's a good question and no doubt one that Vitello is asking himself. Right now it would be LSU because of facilities and the warmer weather. There's nothing we can do about the weather, but with an upgrade to the facilities here, it might be that we close the gap enough for CTV to stay.

If the clear answer is LSU, then, if he's offered, there is zero reason to think he'd choose to stay. Zero.

If it's not clearly the case that he's more likely to win titles there, then there are compelling reasons to favor staying over leaving.

the only compelling reason to stay is that he’s the king of the city right now with far less expected of him than if he were to go to LSU. But his chances of winning championships are exponentially better at LSU. It’s like asking if Tennessee or Kentucky are more likely to win championships in basketball. Even though tennessee has owned kentucky head to head, the answer is always going to be kentucky.

Yep. Here's to hoping they don't offer him.

At Tennessee, Vitello can be our “Skip Bertman”. At LSU, he’ll always be in the shadow until he wins 5+ NCAAs.

I lived in BR when LSU hired Bertman. Their program was the pits and SEC baseball wasn’t what it is today. Bertman didn’t just build LSU, he built the SEC in baseball in every place except Miss State.

The grass is not always greener, and if he goes to LSU he could just as easily win a CWS title in 2-3 years as he could be fired in 2-3 years. They're going to expect him to essentially win the SEC and make it to Omaha from Day 1 with the talent they return next season. On the other hand, if he stays here this one CWS appearance has probably bought him 6 years of goodwill with the fanbase, there is zero pressure to perform, and he'll get every bit of resources and fan support here that he could at LSU.

Our stadium isn't as flashy as Alex Box, but you cannot convince me this fanbase is less supportive than the LSU fanbase. I won't accept it. After what I have seen the past few weeks, Vol Nation will flock to a winning program, and you'll continue to build that support if you keep winning. We're also a pretty wealthy school in our own right, so he'll get his resources, too.

I don't think being in someone's shadow is at all part of the calculus. When you're a coach, priority number one is winning that first title. Nothing else really matters

i agree with this take, as i've obviously shared the same sentiment.. but i think we have to remember that coaches don't think like normal people. they are confident that they can and will succeed and that's why they get as far as they do. getting fired isn't on tony's mind (if) he takes the LSU job. How many titles he can win is.

I'm not saying TV is risk averse and would be turned off by the stature of the LSU job, I'm just saying it's definitely something he'll consider. The proof is in the pudding as they say, and he took a solid (but not supremely talented) Vols squad to Omaha in Year 3.25. Sure, LSU is the more prestigious and glamorous CBB program, but college athletics are on a different landscape these days (outside of football). Every school has money. Parity is at an all-time high. You can win anywhere. We're so down on our own program, it's crazy. There is plenty of reason for optimism here.

We’re down on ourselves because it’s been proven over the last decade or so that good coaches leave, bad coaches get fired, and we repeat that process.
