Conservative Playcalling (merged)

Where are the designed runs for Nico? Why haven't we seen one play where he just takes off running???? I get the injury aspect, but he is getting pressured and hit anyway. A designed run here and there would make things much harder on their defense.
Did we win? Is Nico still uninjured? For the gamblers....did we cover? I was confused by the conservative play calling as well, but I agree with the majority of posters that this was a time that CJH just leaned on the run game and defense. Old school smash mouth football. Field was horrible. The reason to not run Nico was shown on the one scramble where he went wide to the left and his feet went flying out from under him the minute he tried to cut upheld. The slow motion replay looked like the field was covered with black sleet from the amount of rubber pellets that he kicked up in the air. Would you rather have a 10 point win with a healthy QB, or a 30 point win with an injured QB?

Based on one game? Man BVS is really bad still.

Not BVS at all. Use your head without being bias. Nico for the heisman this year was crazy talk, and yes one game can remove you from that conversation.

Man, stupidity runs rampant in this area.

Sure it can but this early in the season way too early to make that call. I mean we have him next year too. People just need to chill.

Dude, I am not being biased. Unlike some, I don't live and die on one game. The conditions called for a conservative approach. I was confused bybit as well at first, but it turned out the best for the TEAM. The announcers were still touting Nico's play at the end of the game. 1st real road game for a REDSHIRT FRESHMAN playing in a hostile stadium. Whether he does or doesn't win the Heisman is moot. Back handed jabs are just passive/aggressive BS. Something in some "fans" just drive them to complain about anything. We are 4-0. Still 8 games to play. Stop looking for the black cloud behind the silver lining. WE WON!

Honestly, and I could be wrong, it’s not like Josh would ever show his cards anyway, but I think the game plan was a “boring” game. Get up by a few scores, then take all of the emotion out of the game and take the crowd out. We could’ve taken more risks and hung more points, but I think Josh saw that as unnecessary.

I don't want Nico injuring a knee on that crappy turf in Norman.

Not looking good for our games against Alabama and Georgia. We held on to win against the 15th ranked team and, we really don’t know just how good they are/were.
Over the next few games, I want to see what OU’s defensive stats are. I think we played a really good defense. Will be interesting to see if Bama and GA defenses are even that much better than OU’s now that everyone is getting into the meat of their SEC schedule. Heupel has a few weeks to adjust and prepare for those games.

I am astonished that people are complaining about a win on the road in Norman, Oklahoma. The way the game unfolded, it was clear that the only way Tennessee could lose the game was offensive turnovers. Our defense was unbelievable and was playing an offense that wasn’t particularly good. Why give them an opportunity on a short field to pick up a couple of easy scores?

A great SEC win on the road. Enjoy it

Nico winning the Heisman in 2024 was always a stretch. 2025 could be the year though.

Avoided turnovers and injuries. It is a long season. Also prevented us from embarrassing OU and Venables. Heupel and Venables are friends.

Our offensive play calling almost could have lost this game ,but our defense saved us. Our defense played lights out. The most mellow play calling I have ever seen by our coach. My grand daughter could have easily told you what our next offensive play was going to be. However, we won the game and that is all that counts. A very disappointed fan here, due to our playing not to lose rather than blowing an inferior team out , like it should have been. I am finished complaining, just thank God we ran the clock out.

The play calling, in my opinion, won the game for us. We’re down to our 3rd left tackle, Nico took some shots and had 2 turnovers in the first half because we couldn’t protect. Our defense was playing great. I have no issues with the 2nd half play calling.

Plus he didn’t want to be disrespectful towards OK.

While I understand there’s gonna be a lot of this talk. I think Venables actually had a great game plan. Even down to the grass length on the field 😂. While you may look at it as a bad thing, I believe Josh is being conservative because he’s already seen Dayne Davis give up 2 sack fumbles which had our defense in horrible situations. Luckily our defense got us out of those situations, but there’s no reason to make things harder for your defense when they just forced a QB to get benched. Our OL injuries + Venables game plan just makes it hard for him to do that. It also means he’s grown as a head coach. Sometimes you have to win the smart way.
Agree

I didn’t think the play calling was all that different than normal. It just seemed different because the run plays weren’t nearly as successful as usual.

With 12min left in the game, OU had scored just 3 points and were down by 19 points. That’s two touchdowns, two 2-point conversions, and a field goal needed just to TIE in 12 minutes. The likelihood of doing that without help from a Tennessee turnover is almost zero.

I was very happy to see them put the ball in Sampson and the defenses’ hands to close the game out.

At first I thought it was conservative, but we did take our shots. You are not going to throw bombs all day long against a great defense. We took our shots, we just didn't connect.

It didn't help our on-line was banged up either.

It was the right thing to do, but VN has gotten a little spoiled and wanted to see more flash
