Cooper is a Lady Gamecock

Coaches shouldn't get too close to any one player, even point guards. Not good for morale.

What? Did you ever play a team sport? Coaches having a solid and respectful relationship and healthy lines of communication with players on their team is a main goal. It doesn't have to happen to be successful but is welcome as long as is it doesn't cross the favoritism line.

http://www.espn.com/womens-college-...d-tea-cooper-says-transferring-south-carolina

"Cooper, a 5-foot-8 guard, made the all-Southeastern Conference freshman team in 2015-16 before missing last season with a left knee injury. Cooper will sit out next year before playing her final two years for the Gamecocks."

I'm excited! Cooper made the best decision of her new college basketball career. I don't fault her. If she was kicked out of Tennessee another opportunity arose. South Carolina!

Cooper ain't no Lady Vol no more. She's a Gamecock! And I can't wait until I get to see her play because she's a baller & fun to watch.

And despite Holly's shortcomings as coach next season team is going to be AWESOME!!!

Evina Westbrook or Anastasia Hayes as our starting point guard -That's 2 Good 2 be true?

Along with Diamond, Jaime, Cheredine and Mercedes leading the way!

If next season brings us a F4? Then, Cooper will be just an after thought well unless Holly messes things up, again.
GoLadyVols!

If Holly Warlick can resign her position today and go to South Carolina to coach in the fall, shouldn't a student-athlete have the same option? Why is there one set of rules for the coaching staff, but a more onerous set for the student-athletes?

LOL if the NCAA could stop coaches from doing that, they would. Why do you think Dawn wouldn't allow a player to transfer to Tennessee. I think she would. She let Kelsey Bone transfer to Texas A&M.

I guess you've never heard of a situation where an employee is given the option of resigning or being fired?

In those circumstances, assuming the employee chooses to resign, the "official" position announced by the company is that the employee left voluntarily. While there may be rumors that float around and people within the company may know the "true" story, that doesn't change the official position.

In this instance, there is nothing more than message board chatter to support anything other than the "official" position and, frankly, demands by anonymous message board posters for "facts" are going to, rightly, be met with the silence that they have resulted in, so far.

And, by the way, can anyone remember an occasion when Pat Summitt restricted a player who transferred? I can't, and frankly, I, for one, sincerely hope that the Lady Vols continue that tradition.

Jim

THIS! All this posturing by Nega Vols means jack squat. Just another way to attack the team they profess to be a fan of. Need to move on because there is nothing to see here.

I agree Jim, if for whatever reason they don't want to be or can't be a Lady Vol, let them go wherever they want! We are the Lady Vols and must carry ourselves as such with the mindset that no one can beat us!

Yet another rumor from someone who was in Knoxville today (and therefore it must be true). Somebody must have lied namely those here who gave other versions of the story indicating their story was the truth. SMH.
This so called rumor was also reported on the radio in Knoxville by Hyams. Jimmy always tries to get several sources before putting something out there. Believe it, don't believe it. Don't care.

Not really the point... Staley would not release a transfer to come to Tennessee, so we should not release a transfer to play at SC. This whole thing does make me think perhaps Cooper was asked to leave. I'm sure that Warlick remembers Staley blocking Kelsey Bone from considering Tennessee.

Every coach is different, Dawn was trying to build her program Tennessee is already established! When you are one of the most storied programs, why concern yourself with what others do! If a player wants to transfer to my rival I let them and we kick their behind every year said player is there! That was Pat's mindset and it is something Holly is continuing and Im grateful she is and I think it actually helps recruiting in a sense because parents can see that Holly and her staff cares and will support her players in their decisions

Texas A&M was not part of the SEC at that time when Bone transferred. The year she transferred and sat out Texas A&M was still apart of the Big 12.

The university and the Vol basketball program owe Cooper nothing. She hurt our program and Warlick wants to let her go to our biggest conference rival? Good grief. And we wonder why this program has gone to hell in a handbasket under Warlick. And of course we'll get no details from Fleser of the Knoxville News Sentinel, who has covered this program for years. The words "aggressive reporter" are quite alien to Fleser, who has a boilerplate story on Cooper's transfer that says absolutely nothing except that she's going to South Carolina. He should be reminded that he does not work for UT.

How did she hurt the program? We played a year without her anyway and she wont be able to play for another whole season? She's hurt herself more than anything.

I'm sure Hayes, Westbrook, Davis, Dunbar, MeMe, and Harris aren't sitting with their heads down because she's gone. Yes they may miss her but that gives them more minutes (and for at least one of them a chance to start alongside the big 3 and possibly Green).

She's gone, let's move on!

The season hasn't begun yet and we're already saying it's over. SMFH

One important caveat to your otherwise relevant example is that most companies also have non competes on employees at middle management or higher that prevent them from working for a direct competitor even if the employee was fired without cause.

True. But that is usually contingent upon a severance payment as a parting gift - which is obviously not possible in this case.

Actually, Cooper got the short-end of this mess. Kudos to her, she's going to miss being a part of what's about to go down. And it's going to be Awesome.

She hurt the program because she was an experienced player who would have been valuable in bringing along the freshmen. Even the two highly ranked point guards
Moriah Jefferson and Dangerfield had problems their first year. Jefferson didn't even do so well the second year for such a highly rated player.

It's not unusual for freshmen to struggle their first year. Very few come right into college playing like all stars, It it could happen even though the odds are slim.

Second, with two players now gone, depth with experience becomes an issue. Recruiting will become much more important with the big 3 graduating next year.

The recruits coming in will probably be happy since they will get more minutes thereby making them more valuable the following year, although they will probably hit some bumps their first year. Unfortunately, first year experience might make them more likely a transfer possibility with 3 years eligibility left a la Destiny Slocum. If the big 3 can be replaced for the following season, it would minimize the chance of transfers, which seem to be a big problem in recent years.

It's good to be optimistic, but playing last year without Cooper was a bad example to use. Look at the record. Imagine what might have been achieved with a good point guard.

No reason not to be optimistic about next year, but it will be the big 3 that make it happen IMO.

Dangerfield just finished her freshman year and you said she didn't do well her second year? Wtf? I think Tea has hurt herself more than she's hurt the LV program. Sitting out two years has got to be excruciating for her as well as losing a year of eligibility. Has any player ever sat out two full years and come back to be a force? Maybe so but I can't think of them

I meant Jefferson. She didn't come on strong until near her 3rd year. My point was it's not so easy coming into college. It takes a while, particularly for point guards.

No doubt sitting out 2 years is not good. But if she hadn't left Tennessee, it would have been just 1 year.
