Da Reds thread

same ole reds.
My dear departed father, a lifelong Reds fan of over 80 years is probably still trying to figure out this club in heaven. He played in a lower A before and after WW II military service. He would look at me and say, "I just don't understand them sometimes, son." Neither do I, Dad. Nothing has changed.

haha i agree. that game last night has me taking a couple of weeks off. i just can't get into it anymore.

Right on cue Cueto pitches another gem. The Pirate fans go crazy celebrating Cutch hitting a meaningless one out in the bottom of the ninth. Low standards.

This game demonstrated why Votto hits second and the bats work. You would have needed to see the game, trolls. Billy is starting to figure it all out. Hit safely in 6 of the last 7.

Not calling you a troll, AV. We just have a different opinions at times, which is how it should be.

Yeah, the 2 hole made him a much better hitter, especially with RBI machine BP behind him..

Anyways, Cueto pitched really well today. Too bad they didn't over pay bum Bronson like some wanted... The Reds will be fine, contrary to the belief of some in here

yeah they look fine. i take it you probably thought dooley was a great coach to.

Nice comparison

pretty much the same. with dooley we were a .500 team. the reds this year are a .500 team. both teams had to chance of really improving. since you are a braves fan and i take it you may have saw a couple of the games, i would believe you would have to somewhat agree. the reds have very little hitting on the team at all. homer bailey may go down as one of the worst signings in reds history. regardless your braves didn't use much lube on us in that series.lol

My wife watches a couple of games a year on TV with me if we don't head up for a weekend series. She played a little softball when she was younger and was around the youth league baseball when we were younger. She watched Votto's first AB and said, "He sure is struck on himself, isn't he?" Later in the game he was AB and she said, "Is all he wants to do is get a walk every time? I thought he was some rich big hitter."

Needless to say I lost it. She asked me why I was laughing at her. I had to explain that's what baseball savvy Reds fans have been talking about for a couple of years and that she had figured it out in one game.

Remember that Nelson Cruz deal Walt/Bob passed on that the O's took for $8 mill? .289/.373/.557 with 7 HRs, 25 RBIs, 18 runs. There was the #3 or #4 hitter. All they had to do was trade Luddy and some useless relievers to make room. Or just pass on the new contract with Homer and sign Cruz to a year with an option. He would have made the perfect transition guy until Ervin is ready. Nah - we don't need a guy like that. We like finishing third in our division. Even if things went well with the current roster they were at least one solid producer away from a WS. The last two seasons were enough to figure that out in most organizations.

The Reds have had recent success Dooley had none... It's not like the Brewers are some great team, so I figured they would fall back some... But it's the NL Central so you never know..

Serious question, Did Cruz even show interests or visit Cincy? Looks like he made a good decision, he seems like an AL type player

dooley did make one bowl, but your right he didn't have much success. price is in his first year though and he looks a lot like dooley. he has that deer in the headlights look to him. regardless the reds have no hitting at all on the team and that is jocks fault. it is time for him to go.

Per the Cincy area reports at the time his agent reached out to Walt and they passed. The PEDs issue and his agent demanding a multi-year at $18 M per was the reasoning. In the end the agent overplayed him and nobody bit on the multi-year. He came close to inking with Seattle, but they signed another guy because of the dickering with the agent. So he fell in the O's laps in a prove you can do it year.

I actually agree with you on the Brewers. This series they were playing without Braun who just went on the DL. But our guys have been playing short handed all year so it evens out. I think they are this year's version of the Pirates. There are too many holes in the line-up and shaky starting pitching to expect more than a wild card.

time to move schumaker to 2nd and brandon to ss. cozart is just a joke out there. can't hit or field time to put him on the bench.

It's sad to me that the organization has no SS on the farm that can hit or field better than Cozart. It's equally sad that the only guy they can bring up for Bruce's injury is somebody like Bernandino, who already miserably failed.

Staying the course ain't workin'.

A little fun on my favorite buck sucker with 20% of the season gone. Right on cue Votto watches a third strike, down the middle, waist high in his first AB tonight in Boston. lol.

Votto is tearing it up with a .272/.425/.447 with 4 HRs, 10 RBIs and 17 Runs. He is signed for 13 years at $263 M - which works out to the $20 M average. He has been moved to the 2 hole as we know, since he sucked at the #3.

Question: Where does Votto rank at this point in the season compared to other 2 hole hitters in the NL?

Answer: He is tied for 4th best production. Currently Justin Upton, Yadier Molina and Anthony Rendon have clearly better production. Neil Walker and Daniel Murphy have equal type production depending on what stats you value most. The highest paid in that group are Molina and Upton, who make half of what Votto does on his contract average. Molina plays a more critical, physical position and has higher production. The next two, Walker and Murphy each make around 25-30% of what Votto makes on his average at $5.7 M each. Rendon is the young gun at 23 years old and is making around $2 M.

Unfortunately, Votto's production is likely to stay the same based on trends from his return from the knee injury. Now consider that the club paid him to be the best hitter and third in the order. In reality he should be compared to the best hitter on each team. However, that would be an even worse comparison.

What the Sabermetrics guys leave out are the life changing events that affect production and change the trend lines. They either go out over some period of a career, or against other players at the same position. They tend to leave the value out of it because it is harder to quantify.

8th inning lead off batter gets on and the great votto grounds into a DP. mr.clutch is a joke when the reds need a big hit. maybe jock will do something smart and package cozart and votto together for a big right handed bat, or at least some good prospects.

Cool vid. That would have been the early years of Crosley Field. Saw my first game there with my dad as a toddler in the late 1950's. Saw Pete Rose his rookie year. I often wonder what would have happened if they had renovated and improved Crosley through the years instead of going with the one size fits all with the Bengals at Riverfront. Had kind of a Wrigley, Fenway type feel plus the terrace. Can still see Frank Robinson and Vada Pinson roaming the outfield along with Jim Maloney, Jim O'Toole and Joey Jay on the mound in my mind's eye.

haha one time so far this year, but hopefully it is just the start. not going to place any bets on it though.

One big hit every 30+ games from Mr. Clutch. Just ask trolling Scotty if he will trade Freeman for Votto straight up. If he says yes you know he is lying.

With Bruce out Price flips Votto to clean up. I bet they go on a big win streak now - one game in a row. lol.
