Da Reds thread

i know it's a troll, but the idea of trading two starters to keep a closer is lol worthy

Well stated. lol.

Don't have any idea how they plan to hold on to this staff or even if they will try. They have backed themselves into a corner with the big, longer term contracts to a handful of guys - a couple of which that have been mediocre or inconsistent since signing. I still say the answer in the pen for a closer long term is Cingrani. He thinks like a pen guy, not a starter. Still depends too much on his fastball, but could develop the other two pitches as Chappy has done. Getting rid of Luddy's $8 M a year will help. They have Broxton through 2015 with a club option for 2016. If Tubs can stay healthy and Cingrani goes to the pen for good, there are the two righty/lefty closers they could use and say goodbye to Chappy.

I really wonder about Price at times. Nearly blew the game. 5-2 lead and LeCure in after his struggles for games. Has Cingrani sitting in the pen after he goes 2 easy innings two days before. Then makes the problem worse with Ondrusek, who promptly gives up the hit to tie the game. Frazier bails them out with his HR, but it really doesn't have to be this hard. He needs to speed up his managerial comprehension. You would think with all of his pitching coach years he would know not to insert guys that are off into close games as well as when to pull them.

Go 4-2 on the road. Gain nothing on the Brew Crew. The schedule don't look good for the rest of the season. Oh, well.

Jumbo Diaz up, Tony Cingrani down. Good move. Should have been done weeks ago.

EDIT: Never mind on Jumbo. Cingrani still needed to go down to do work. This club has serious issues. Looks like Tubs will be visiting the DL soon - again. Velocity and control are tubing as he strains his arm when his weight starts to impact his body movement.

Strong bounce back today. Leake is back to working the ball down and on the edges. Votto looked like the old JV today. Made a terrific play with Leake on D. Starting to hit those gap line drives again. He is also focused again. Hope this lasts.

Bernadina DFA. Contreras up as middle reliever from Pensacola. 13 pitchers on active roster. Hope Price plans to test them and move at least one of them out and bring in a bat.

Well - Votto managed to revert to bad D the very next day. Geez. Blows the throw to Cueto, then on the next hitter doesn't stretch to catch the throw from Cueto. I do not get it. That is something after all these years that you just do because it is the right fundamental way to play the position.

He's too good at drawing walks. Twice as many walks as RBI's. lol. Overall his D is better than last season, which was really bad.

Frustrating club. You think they are getting it together and then they just get stupid. This stretch of games heading into the ASG will be the tale of the tape for this season. With a pitching staff with Cueto, Simon, Bailey, Latos, Leake, Chapman and Broxton - yet to only be at .500. Shame to not get it done with that on your team.

votto is nothing but an average player anymore. booted the ball last night again to cost us 3 runs. i wish there was a way to release him without paying that stupid contract the reds gave him.

I agree. I feel sorry for him to some degree. Not so much that I don't want to see the contract go away if he will never be the pre-injury JV. Watching him last night you could tell he cannot push off with that knee right, even on D. He cannot pivot for power with his batting stroke. He will have a good game or two when you think he is getting it together and then it all is just gone again. Since they waited too long to trade him, the only thing I can see to do is to rest him every 4th or 5th day. Hannahan's rehab is going well. Use Pena at first until he comes back. I really believe the organization has withheld info on the knee injury to keep tails in seats.

It is all such a shame since they are one hitter short of getting it done this season. The starting pitching staff is excellent right now. Get middle relief worked out and send the worst down when Hannahan comes back. I am going to be PO'd if they lose Leake because they kept Bailey. Leake is heading down the Greg Maddux path if he keeps working. He has that cutter fast ball coming in at 93 now. Last season it was 89-90. His S&C program is starting to pay big dividends.

Who would have thought the Giants would have replaced the Astros and Cubs as the favorite whipping boy of the Reds? Wow. This has been a really good road trip to this point.

This has been a really good road trip in general. But who actually loses a game when their starter throws a one hitter against a bad team? Yep. 1-0. Our guys get 5 hits and no runs. Looked terrible on the base paths.

They are finally admitting that Votto will be limited again the rest of the season. It looks to me like something didn't go right at all back when he had the first knee surgery. Quad muscle deterioration occurs when there is major reconstruction- not on a simple meniscus tear over a period of two years. With therapy he should have been 100% in 3-4 months back in 2012. Wonder if he got staph or something? It is reacting like Maymon's did in basketball.

Bipolar team. Who were those guys in SD? Score a couple of runs in 3 games against a losing team after having their way with SF. Wow.

Votto is a shell of himself. His interviews with the media have been really odd. He discussed mental health frequently on WLW in the off season. So it must be both his leg and his head. Shut him down and figure it out. This team probably isn't going anywhere anyway.

Time for Mez to learn how to play first base. Cannot afford for him to sit out as much as he has. Pena and Mez should be the guys that do it until Hannahan comes back, or they find a guy that can hit.

All Cinci fans are now begging the club to shut Votto down for the season. The guy is not even half what he was last year - which was much less than he was pre-injury. Figure out if he can be fixed or needs to take a medical retirement. But even more unimpressive is how they let Price carry 13 pitchers. With Votto hurt they only have 11 healthy position players. Who does that? Nobody. Especially when they can't hit. Been going on for a month. Good time to take a break from all this mess.

They said yesterday Bruce has been taking reps at 1st. He plays it off as nothing but he has a 1st baseman's glove for a reason.

we can only hope. ken griffey jr all over again.

That's what I've been saying for two years. Could see it coming. Junior all over again so far. I say that while I am watching Welsh promoting the Votto Foundation. lol.

Please let it be medical retirement or a major trade soon.

Bruce could develop into a very good first baseman because he has good hands and is more athletic than Votto, which should help his footwork. Of course I doubt that would happen because of him being good in RF. It does increase the options though.

Very fortunate to come back and win that game last night. First time all year they came behind from more than 2 runs down. If he had not taken Holmberg out early enough it would have been over. Stupid move to bring him up. Guy can't break a window pane with his fast ball and no other real out pitch. They have known that since they acquired him. Should have done nothing but use the existing underworked pen out of that 13 pitcher staff - which was proved by how they shut them down after he pulled Holmberg. Thank goodness Bruce is starting to hit. Add him to the new big three - Billy, Todd, and Devin - and some occasional help from BP; should give them some offense for the balance of the season.
