Also - my post above #538 still applies. Hope it changes because they will never develop a winning culture the way they play now.

I don't see it changing until we get a new ownership group in power. Bob Castellini is the biggest issue to establishing a winning culture because I think he wants yes man in charge. We need real baseball people in charge and not guys like Dick Williams and David Bell who only have jobs because of their personal family connections to the franchise. That is why I wanted guys like Girardi or John Farrell who have won World Series during the manager search.

100% agree. The elite guys will not come to Cincy because of the ownership/FO issue. Most can get over the smaller market, they just cannot sign the line with Bob C and the gang running the club. They would rather sit out and wait for a better opportunity. I'm not exaggerating in saying the team has lost at least 10 games already this season as a result of Bell's inability to fill out a line-up card right as well as having no feel for making pitching changes. Maybe he learns from it, it's our only hope as long as the ownership stays the same. Even tonight - Dietrich is hitting .200 and done nothing since coming back. So he bats him and .230 hitting Barnhart ahead of Senzel to kill scoring opportunities. I know Nick is in development with the new stance - but he still represents your best shot to get an RBI or on base when you need it. Dumb stuff like having a platooning Winker leading off much of the season and making J-Iggy hit 7th when he was leading the team in BA at .290 while rarely striking out. Thankfully, Galvis has come in hot and active.

I give them heck when they mess it up, so I will give credit when it's due. Taking Nick out of the line-up to allow him time to work on the new stance/swing has really helped. The past two games have been eye openers as to his potential. Such a quality athlete and hard worker.

I'm running out of words to describe Aquino. Dude once again is our entire offense tonight, another home run and an RBI single to tie the game back up.

Once again they have forgotten how to score without HR's. Bottom third in runs scored per game. Bottom third in OBP. Last season they were in the middle of the pack on runs scored and top third in OBP.

This team is still tanking. My revised prediction is 72-74 W's. Bell is the worst manager I have ever seen at 1 run games. Total loser in tight games. Bauer needs a head adjustment.

And just like that he's back to messing up. Going to be a roller coaster with him until he can groove it.

CINCINNATI -- With a homer, a win and an appearance in the outfield, Michael Lorenzen pulled off a feat last accomplished by the Babe. Cincinnati's versatile reliever also blocked the Phillies from gaining ground in the playoff chase.

Lorenzen hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning Wednesday night as the Reds pulled away to an 8-5 victory. He got his first win and first homer of the season. He also finished the game playing center field.

It is sad how bad this team is tanking. Sonny takes a no-hiiter into the 7th, ends up giving up 2 runs, takes an L despite the final score of 5-3. Some things are just not fair. How the club is finishing at the plate should be a wake-up call to the FO.

Senzel going under the knife of Kremchek for the right throwing shoulder. Kiss of death when that guy operates on you. The FO needs to wake up and move Senzel to 2B before his career is destroyed.

Well we end the season taking the series from the Pirates and going 75-87 (8 game improvement from last year). Not the season we were hoping for but the starting pitching showed signs that hopefully we can compete next year. We have to add some help to the bullpen and also upgrade the hitting heading into next year to seriously be in the hunt.

Agree. The pitching strongly improved, which covered for the hitting decline. I believe this was an 80 win team, somewhere around .500. The catching position killed them, the FO was right to want to upgrade preseason. When you have to go sign an out of work FA as your #5 to go with your #4 who is a minor leaguer to cover for several weeks in the middle of the season - you've got problems. Which made the pitching even more important and impressive. No Scooter production, minimal help from Winker, Senzel going under the knife, Votto having a poor year with more back issues, etc.

I still prefer a quality CF so they can move Senzel to 2B. VanMeter can backup 2B and play corner OF part of the time. That scenario has so much more upside IMO. But they may choose to go big and upgrade catching, so who can blame them? Winker has not made it through either season without serious injury and cannot hit lefties. Aquino was an unexpected boost. If they keep only one corner OF outside of Aquino, I hope it is Ervin. By all means sign J-Iggy. They will probably choose to keep Senzel in CF and use Galvis at 2B since they have a team option with him for 2020.

Agree on the pen. IMO, the needs are lefties in the pen, catching upgrade, and a productive bat in the OF. Wants are something different altogether. But if they handle the needs, the playoffs could be in the picture.

I'm like you I want to move Senzel back to 2B and grab a CF but I'm not sure the FO will do that. On the bright side the last time the team went 75-87 we won the WS the following year in 1990 lol.

lol. Make it happen!

I have hope for the club again. Second off season in a row the FO is making major changes. Turner Ward out as hitting coach. They took a big step back last season with him as we know. Half dozen well known coaches/instructors fired on the farm including Hatcher and Darwin. The players have not been developed well and quickly enough for a decade or more. Not even close to a lot of orgs in MLB. Small cap markets have to get that done well to compete. Hopefully more positive changes to come.

A big deal just happened today. Kyle Boddy of Driveline BB just signed with the org to be the Director of Pitching Initiatives/Pitching Coordinator, which is focused on the farm's development. Cotham stays as assistant coach to DJ, but also gets to be the team's Director of Pitching over implementation and philosophies throughout the org. Cotham used Driveline when he was pitching and has the Vandy ties with DJ and Sonny Gray. Boddy also stays as the head of Driveline BB, which is where Trevor Bauer works in the off season. This is forward thinking and exciting. Still not sure I am believing our Reds did it. lol.

Not sure what Driveline is but good I guess, I know I saw Cubs wanted to hire him.

Data driven training using high speed video and flexibility techniques to improve pitches by type, velocity, locating, etc. Test, train, retest, train, etc. They tailor their programs to the individual players. High school, college and pro. They also do hitting. The org is going to incorporate their concepts and methods throughout the entire system and Cotham will be the Director. He will coordinate it all with Body's company. DJ has signed off on it. A former Red that also utilized Driveline who went from nothing to something was Dan Straily. Bauer will be training with them again mid-month.

The short answer to what it does is get pitchers to their maximum effectiveness faster while they are still in development. Once they hit the bigs, they get fine-tuned each off season to prepare for the next season as Bauer does.

Williams announced the pocketbooks will be open to spend significantly more than the $126 M payroll of this past season. Like we thought - OF, C, 2B, and pen. They still want Senzel in the OF. Williams has a love for Winker. I don't share it. When I see Winker report with 5-10 more pounds of muscle and ability to turn on the ball, I may reconsider. His D is mediocre at best. Aquino needs a full season to see if he is for real. So they will be shopping. Grandal at C is on the wish list. No qualifying offer required for him this time around.

They have 8 locks on the staff - Castillo. Gray, Bauer, Disco, R-Iggy, Garrett, Lorenzen and Bob Steve.

I think they want Senzel back at 2B will move Iglasius and put Glavis at short. Go after Yasmani Grandal to catch, and OF possibilities include; Marcell Ozuna and Nicholas Castellanos

I can see Gausman and maybe Bowman too. Gausman could be pricey but I liked what I saw from him as a relief pitcher.
