Da Reds thread

After Senzel goes 4/4 at lead off with a SB, Bell says enough with that noise, you go back to hitting 6th. smh...

Another strange stat. At this moment Castillo and Suarez have the exact same .125 batting average. Geno - uh, bud, that ain't good.

I think David Bell thinks he is or wants to be the smartest man in baseball. He might be a great manager if he just went with his gut instead of the numbers just a little more. I'm already preparing myself for the next manager search this year or next if they don't pick up Bell's option.

100% agree on org and was just curious of the opinion of others. JV was doing what was best for JV and should because that is all he has control over - his performance. He shows up to work and give his best effort his way every game.

They selected their generational player and face of the franchise. Then they do not build around him and keep it together for more than 5 minutes. Whether you like JV or not at the $25 M price tag for all those years - that was the market when they did it for that type player. Years ago Bob C and Walt stated publicly they expected production more over OBP with JV and got on to him about it in one off season, then proceeded to let him go OBP anyway. That probably extended JV's career. Now that his eye and bat quickness has slowed down so that OBP is tougher, he has gone back to production.

My point is if the org was going to let that happen, they needed to build the team differently. IMO, that is why we find the team where it is today - some 10+ years later with no playoff wins or WS appearances to show for it. Which is a shame for him and us.

Gotcha. My dad is one of those anti-Votto fans but he was a fan during the heyday of the Machine and the 1990s Nasty Boys so he may be a little biased. He swears up and down Votto wouldn't play on those squads but I argue otherwise.

Each era has done things differently. The '90 Reds caught lightning in a bottle. The BRM was, well, the BRM. The current org has been so rigid in using Votto and building around him. Would love to see that change.

Looks like he will be out for 3-4 weeks with a hand fracture. Freak deal.

Hunter Greene threw 37 pitches at 100+MPH the highest total a pitcher has thrown (in either MLB/MiLB) in his start for the Lookouts today.

If you had told me Miley would be the ace of the staff I would have laughed. He just threw the 17th no-hitter in team history.

Actually, 7th, but it might seem like 17.

I sure didn't expect much of him and he may turn into a pumpkin next week but this was one for the history books

saw him pitch in lafe April and had hoped Cards would feast on him, and came away impressed w/ his work, thinking maybe he wasnt an overpaid veteran

lucked into catching ninth last night and saw what a turnaround season he was having. I think he entered 2021 w/ 4.40 lifetime ERA

OK gang - time for some optimism.

If Bell can keep it in his head to use this line-up for more than 5 minutes going forward, this team can hit their way into the playoffs with mid-peer pitching. Need Sonny, Tyler and Floyd to stay healthy. Castillio is in the early stages of getting it back together. Keep fine tuning the pen as DJ will continue to do.

Beating the rats is no big accomplishment. However, the scoring has been like last night many times this season. They just need a little more consistency game to game. The weak link is Geno. He needs to find it and quit trying to be Hammering Hank every AB. His approach and eye have not been good last mini-season or this one.

We all know Senzel is a top of the order guy. If he is slumping they now have Naquin to sub into that spot. So that's a LO/6th in the order thing. Winker is a classic for the 2 hole and can go on either side of that slot as needed. Castellanos is perfect at 3 and can go either side as needed. Moose is perfect at clean-up until/if Geno gets his act together at which time he can slide back to 5th. I would much rather have Farmer/best IF utility guy playing SS than Geno. Barnhart/Stephenson is as good as we could ever hoped to have. Stephenson is a stud - told Mark Sheldon that back when they were considering drafting him. He was headed to UGA before they made the pick.

Let's ride with this until Votto is healthy and then it may become time to trade Geno for a playoff run piece. Shogo is on the block as well. India becomes trade bait if a great deal gets laid on the table. If not he's the future at 3rd. Not because he is a Vol, but you hold onto Senzel. He's a Ben Zobrist in the making. CF/2B and 3B (his natural position) in a pinch. You never give up a guy with that much ability on defense that can hit as well as run unless he cannot stay healthy. Hopefully he has found his path forward as a Red.

14-1 don't suck if you're a Reds fan. Don't know what it is about the Pirates because the rest of the league hasn't had their way with 'em, but as a Reds fan I'd like to play them more often

Getting blown out by one of the worst teams in MLB is concerning. They need to get it together on the pitching staff. Embarrassing display 2 games in a row.

But hey, Geno has raised his BA to .154.

They need more guys on the team with Castellanos' attitude -

“At the end of the day, just get a win,” Castellanos said. “At the end of the day, that’s all that matters. It’s just buying into that and believing that we’ve got to do it together.”

If they don't get it together and he continues to play like he is, he will opt out of his contract and go somewhere that does.

Shogo with the defensive play of day in the 9th to give Castellanos the opportunity to win it. Mahle with another strong start.

Just get a win today and go back to GABP.

Senzel finally got to play his natural 3B and was the only defensive star on the team - again. This org is so dumb. They need Suarez to heat up a bit so they can get more than a ham sammitch and trade him. Nick needs to be in the IF at 3B or 2B - he and Moose are interchangeable. Find/play somebody who is strong on D at SS. When Votto comes back move Moose back to 2B. India needs more seasoning. They've got enough in the OF and C to get it done. Set the line-up and leave it alone other than for rest and injuries. Focus on better pitching.

The good news is a loss is a loss no matter the score if you have less runs than the opponent.

The bad news is this pitching staff and the pen in particular is just plain awful now. I really don't know who some of those guys are and why they were allowed to sign MLB contracts. This team is tubing fast.

Is there any bigger disappointment with starting pitching so far this season than Castillo? It looked like he was turning a corner a few starts back and now it looks like he's batting practice quality.
