Da Reds thread

Pitchers/catchers reporting today and just like that my excitement for 2023 is already over. Its a shame ownership sucks the fun out of the fan base.

Here is the article off their website. Gotta say, I like it. I've had him as a potential great one since high school in GA. Was thrilled he was drafted instead of him going to GA Tech or UGA. It makes sense to keep him fresh and his bat in the line-up 140+ games per season. The catcher rotation plan is smart IMO, especially with a pros' pro like Casali involved.

More of guys like Tyler and less wannabes. India and Senzel need to step up. The later can be traded if he doesn't get it together this season. Bell needs a core of everyday guys that will battle and stay healthy.

Reds map out plan to keep Stephenson in lineup

This Spring Training us fans have a lot of new young players to get to know. Of course they're not going to win anything but they'll be more exciting than seeing Aquino and Barrero swing and miss 3x. We saw too much of that last year. Barrero may start at SS Opening Day but if he plays like he did last year, he won't be there long.

This team won't start 3-22. They'll be improved and more fun to watch. I'm also interested in how the new clock and bigger bases affect the game

We'll see if they do indeed only play Stephenson behind the plate 2 or 3 times a week. My guess is that he plays there more and I like him as a C. He's much more valuable there than at 1B or DH

I am not sure if any of this has been posted in here. But here are the Reds top prospects rankings according to Fangraphs and another site I enjoy reading which is Prospects1500. Seems like the Reds have quite the number of impressive 3B prospects. I was keeping an eye on Joe Boyle. If he could get those walks under control I believe he could be possibly be great. Either as a starter or in the bullpen. He had some great numbers at the High A level with the exception of his 7.11 BB/9. Then when he moved to AA that increased to 8.65 BB/9. He needs to work on getting those walks down significantly.

The team announced Greene will be the OD starter.

Also I know its spring training but we're leading the MLB in stolen bases with 23 I like it.

Guess don't give us fans any sort of excitement in a season that's going to be ****.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. I think we'll see a lot of those guys this year. They just won't be Reds for 162 games. There's really not much room on the roster for those guys. Best not to let them get in a full 2023 season any way for service time issues. I will say I don't want to see 2022 Barerro at SS. He's got a real short leash with me. I don't want Newman there either. I think we'll see lots of talented younger players this year. Just not early in April

I know it just frustrates me with the owner BS in baseball. If a young guy is more talented play him service time be damned. On top of that there needs to be a salary cap floor and hard ceiling too in order to keep the game going. Its ridiculous what teams can get away with both rich and poor.

Very good points, especially on the floor/ceiling. That's not getting enough pub. Right now there is a discrepancy of nearly $300 mill in team payrolls from 1-30. That's nuts and shouldn't be allowed. The sport can't continue like that. A team like the Pirates draft and develop a guy like Barry Bonds but then they're destined to lose him because another team has a few hundred million more to spend. It's ruining the sport

I agree something has to be done but the players are not going to go for it. Its not fair to teams like us to have young stars like India, Greene, or Lodolo because we know by the time their cheap control years are up we're either going to trade them at the deadline or lose them in free agency. The days of finding, developing, and keeping a HoFer like Votto are over for small teams.

To be fair, I don't think either side wants it. The owners want the ability to have a $40mill payroll. Our Reds did pony up for Votto but it screwed up their finances, just like Griffey Jr did a decade prior. Both deals were fair deals but it kept the team from spending elsewhere due to payroll constrainst. I'm not absolving the Reds from being poorly run but this makes it far tougher.

Agree. Numbers have to work for both owners and players union. If they don't, these Reds get sold and moved.

Our frustration goes back a long way when they had the opportunity to strengthen the farm system and chose not to. They are trying to go back to that and give up the idea of holding onto superstars. Field average guys sprinkled with young stars and hope to hit on a combo that catches lightning in a bottle while developing a deeper range of farm talent. Wrong owner to go over the top and spend out of pocket to get to a higher level quicker.

Until there is an opportunity for parity, it will always be hard on the fanbases of small market teams.

Kinda clickbait headline they were talking about if Joey came to them asking to be traded to his hometown Blue Jays they might consider it but I'd hate for that to happen. I really want to see the GOAT finish his career in a Reds uniform.

I don't see any team wanting JV at this stage of his career at a cost of $25 M unless he shows more than a spark of his old self over a longer period during the season. It's about production. He's coming off a serious injury and hasn't been GOAT quality since 2018 or even played enough games to qualify for it since 2019.

Hope he contributes what he can, retires as a Red, and rides off into the sunset to enjoy the rest of his life.

Here we are, pretty much at Opening Day and our payroll is a paltry $70mill. But that's not what we're going to see on the the field. Our 26 man payroll while Votto is in Louisville is going to be the lowest in MLB and there's no close 2nd to us. Our Opening Day 26 man roster payroll will be $20mill. The next highest is more than twice that at $42mill (A's). That equates to basically all 26 guys making the MLB minimum. You don't get cheaper than that. When Votto gets back he'll be making more than all of his teammates combined.

This is wrong on all kinds of levels. If it's just temporary it might be OK but for now it sucks
