tl;dr
my memories of the Reds started in 72
I never was a fan of another team, had aunt and uncle in Cleveland and liked the Tribe okay
first game I attended was in 75, and Bench hit a HR against the Astros (Cruz, Cedeno, that bunch) in the 12th to win it
went to several games over the years
90 was great
was able to attend a NLCS game in 95 in Cincy, but they lost to the Braves: great atmosphere
never been to GAB
great to be winning some games again
Edit: miss Marty and Joe a lot
Good stuff. Thanks for sharing. Marty and Joe were icons.
Old man here. I went to my first game in Crosley with my dad at age 4 in 1958, the season after Ted Kluszewki was traded to the Rats. I only remember Dad keeping a scorecard, the outfield terrace and a big pole in front of us that blocked our view, and the smells of the ballpark. lol.
From that point on we would go see them a few times each season. Saw Robinson, Pinson, Blasingame, Jay, Maloney, O'Toole, Purkey - all of them including the WS against the Yankees in 1961 on TV. I was just happy they won one game. Yes, I got to see Pete play a couple of games his rookie season in 1963. Dad loved him and his style. I followed the team closely and they were why I continued to play the game into my freshman year in college. In the summers I came home to work and would take in games at Riverfront until I graduated in 1976 and moved off for good. The BRM is imprinted in my brain and heart. Never out of a game no matter the score.
My claim to fame with that bunch was my HS guidance counselor/former baseball coach from Loveland was drinking buddies with some of the players. He grew up with Pete. I also played one game as a freshman against Mike Schmidt in HS. They killed us and you could tell he was on a totally different level.
Through the years I followed the team on TV and through newspapers except for an occasional game when I visited my folks. That continued through the years from here in east TN. Occasionally we head up to Cincy to visit my folks' grave site in Butler Memorial and spend some time. We always go to a game at GABP or two when there.
Dad would haunt me for the rest of my life if I did not continue to root for our guys. I am passing the love onto my oldest grandson who says he wants to pitch for the Vols and Reds one day.
