Da Reds thread

tl;dr
my memories of the Reds started in 72
I never was a fan of another team, had aunt and uncle in Cleveland and liked the Tribe okay
first game I attended was in 75, and Bench hit a HR against the Astros (Cruz, Cedeno, that bunch) in the 12th to win it
went to several games over the years
90 was great
was able to attend a NLCS game in 95 in Cincy, but they lost to the Braves: great atmosphere
never been to GAB
great to be winning some games again
Edit: miss Marty and Joe a lot

Good stuff. Thanks for sharing. Marty and Joe were icons.

Old man here. I went to my first game in Crosley with my dad at age 4 in 1958, the season after Ted Kluszewki was traded to the Rats. I only remember Dad keeping a scorecard, the outfield terrace and a big pole in front of us that blocked our view, and the smells of the ballpark. lol.

From that point on we would go see them a few times each season. Saw Robinson, Pinson, Blasingame, Jay, Maloney, O'Toole, Purkey - all of them including the WS against the Yankees in 1961 on TV. I was just happy they won one game. Yes, I got to see Pete play a couple of games his rookie season in 1963. Dad loved him and his style. I followed the team closely and they were why I continued to play the game into my freshman year in college. In the summers I came home to work and would take in games at Riverfront until I graduated in 1976 and moved off for good. The BRM is imprinted in my brain and heart. Never out of a game no matter the score.

My claim to fame with that bunch was my HS guidance counselor/former baseball coach from Loveland was drinking buddies with some of the players. He grew up with Pete. I also played one game as a freshman against Mike Schmidt in HS. They killed us and you could tell he was on a totally different level.

Through the years I followed the team on TV and through newspapers except for an occasional game when I visited my folks. That continued through the years from here in east TN. Occasionally we head up to Cincy to visit my folks' grave site in Butler Memorial and spend some time. We always go to a game at GABP or two when there.

Dad would haunt me for the rest of my life if I did not continue to root for our guys. I am passing the love onto my oldest grandson who says he wants to pitch for the Vols and Reds one day. 👍

I went to bed after Benson's HR. Should have known. At least it was still a W when I got up. A little snake bit against that bunch. Need to get over that hump.

I don't know what it is but we just can't seem to hit Milwaukee pitching

Imagine my surprise when I looked up their team ERA and saw it was only 10th best in MLB. I was positive they were #1 based on how poorly our guy do against them.

I'm curious to see everybody's take on this. Have they been winning in spite of Bell, because of Bell, because he is just staying out of the way - or some combination?

The press release was high schoolish IMO. He's one of us/tradition type sales pitch. That does not win games. Make it about the Cincinnati Reds winning consistently as a team.

I like the management and usage of the pitching staff for the most part. I wonder about the batting order at times. Players make plays, so I'm giving them most of the credit. I'm OK with the signing for the continuity, I just don't see them winning as a direct result of the brilliance of Bell as their manager.

I'm kinda iffy on it but the players do seem to like playing for him? He hasn't had much to work with either during his time here and now that he finally has a good core of young players he seems to have us in the hunt.

If the Reds are not going to make a trade for a starting pitcher than they need to bring up Connor Phillips or Lyon Richardson and see what they have. Rolling Luke Weaver out there every 5 days isn't working and he isn't going to apart of the long term plan either. Might as well take the lumps now and see what another rookie has.

India on the 10 day IL with plantar fasciitis. Which is obviously why his performance began tanking a couple of months ago. It is a nagging bitch of an injury. I have personally dealt with it. It doesn't just heal on its own. Rest and daily therapy/exercises are all that will heal it.

Maybe they can rest him more and go easy on him heading into next season. I want that guy healthy and on my roster to start next season not only due to his performance on the field but with his value in the dugout/locker room.

He needs to build his value back before considering a trade.
