Dan Mullen

He beat Georgia once, too. Georgia was 6-7 that year, but did you know they once won a national championship?

How does beating a 6-7 team make you proven?? Im not saying he isn't a good coach, he probably would be a decent hire. I just think there are quite a few other coaches before him on the list.

The point is he beat those guys... It's not his fault that they sucked that year!

If the next UT coach beats Florida and Florida somehow goes 5-7 that year I still count that as beating a rival

That would still be a terrible season considering we lost too alabama, georgia, south carolina, etc

He beat Florida in 2009, I think they went 8-5, but they won a few national championships. Hell, did you see where they beat the **** out of Florida St. today? Obviously, if you beat a program that beats the **** out of Florida St., you have to be proven.

Florida is going to have to be 5-7 if UT hires Dan Mullen and they want to beat Florida.

I don't think Charlie Strong is the one that lost to Ole Miss. That would be your boy Mullen. It's alright though, he beat Florida three years ago.

Remember when I said Ole Miss would beat Cuse by 2 TDs and you said MSU would have a chance bc they were losing by 4 TDs? Well if Ole Miss beat MSU by 4TDs and if Charlie Strong could only beat MSU by 3 TDs then he'd still lose by a TD to Ole Miss... It was a joke. I was being sarcastic and condescending like half of your arguments

Your making no sense whatsoever, what does 2009 have to do with anything.. that's just like saying joker phillips is proven because he beat us and we won a national championship in 1998.

Al Groh doesn't have a gig these days and he beat FSU.

The sarcasm is just because that guy has still not figured out that I think Mullen is **** despite arguing with you as I am faux-arguing with him. I kinda like messing with people who aren't reading the threads.

I am not trying to be condescending, I just don't understand why you guys think that Mullen is a good fit here. There is zero evidence to suggest that. Strong, on the other hand, turned a program that was in absolutely terrible shape into a possible BCS team in his third year. Yeah, they lost a couple bad games, but so has everyone else at some point. I would rather look at the games he has won, and he has won some games where he clearly did not have the better team. Mullen has yet to do that, even if you give him the Florida game, that is once in 4 years. Strong has won more of those wins in once less year.

Joker Phillips should obviously be one of Dave Hart's first calls, because Tennessee is one of the best programs in the history of college football. Wins like that don't come often, so you have to snap up the guys that are capable of getting them.

Are you kidding, Dan Mullen is about to be 8 and ****ing 4. Not even kidding you. Even after taking this ass pounding from Ole Miss, he is going to be 8-4. Beat a juggernaut Auburn team to get there, too.

Lol. So was Jackie Sherrill once or twice. I'm on this J-Train!

I understand your point. I'm not against hiring Charlie Strong. I think Strong would recruit better than Mullen and as long as he hired a good staff around him we'd be in good shape. I don't think he's a home run but he would be a good hire that makes a lot of sense. He's a defensive guy and he has an extensive background in the SEC. I have no idea how he'll do when Muschamp, Saban or Richt is on the other sideline. Our next coach will have high expectations...

If Gruden is taken off the table I think Kliff Kingsbury would be an excellent pick, and requirements like "must have HC experience" are stupid, limiting, and mediocre. Talant is what you look for not if someone has a check list of prior jobs...(if they were such a AWESOME HC? why are they looking for a job?) ..certainly hasn't hurt Florida or Florida State to not make it a requirement. Often the best future talant is at coordinator level, where as many HC are has beens and wanna bes, or doing too well to be interested. Kliff will end up being a phenominal head coach somewhere....and he proved he can get it done in Bama game.

But this is just an excercise in day dreaming, because it will be Gruden. :) But if we could buy him off A&M as a OC that would be nice.

Well, you see, he had those great wins against Arkansas and Auburn this year, and did you see how that mother****er beat Florida in 2010? That was the best 7-6 team of all time that he knocked off. What a champion Dan Mullen is, because he has managed to not get his ass kicked by Ole Miss and used to sit in the same room as Urban Meyer from time to time.

I'm with you emain. Mullen is not the guy and unfortunately for him he has to remove managing to never get his ass kicked by Ole Miss from his outstanding résumé.

In all honesty...if we can't land Gruden I'd put Jim Tessel at the top of the list. Just a shame he has that NCAA Violation chain around his neck along with post-probation. Anyone out there that is readily available and a proven record he is it.

Absolutely not. You realize what a show cause means right? We can hire him, then we have to go to the NCAA and basically take whatever the **** they want to give us as punishment for doing it. Hiring Tressel is one of the dumbest things Tennessee could possibly do.

Here are your two choices

I'm going to weigh in again in this thread- Mullen is not my first choice, and I like Strong- but Mullen has at least coached in the SEC as a Head Coach. Strong and Fisher have coached in crappy conferences. Emainvol, there is no way you can convince me Strong is more qualified. I respect your passion, but between Mullen and Strong, Mullen is better.

When had Meyer coached in the SEC before he got to Florida? Saban before LSU? Miles before LSU? You sensing a pattern here?

Coaching in the SEC doesn't immediately make you more qualified to coach at Tennessee than someone who hasn't. You want to argue that Houston Nutt is more qualified to coach here than Strong? He had some good years just like Mullen. Hell, Nutt actually managed to win a few games against greater opponents in the process as well.

Mullen wouldnt be a bad hire but I dont see why he 'd leave Mississippi St where hes in the SEC with no great expectations, a cross division rivalry against Kentucky to go to a place where they fire a coach who has a street in front of the stadium named after him and made it to the SEC title game the year before he was fired.
