DC Black Hawk vs Plane crash.

I have a dumb question about this... more or less unrelated to the current incident, but kinda related...

Why does the ATC computer system for tracking flights not look like it's been updated since 1983? It looks like it should be hooked up to a dot matrix printer for crying out loud.
because it hasn't been updated.

I read some long article about why it couldn't be upgraded. and I remember being more confused at the end than when I had started trying to understand everything. IIRC its a lowest common denominator problem.

I am sure that Trump has access to more information during the presser than people on this forum. Agree with it or not, he is using the opportunity to shine a light on our countries emphasis of DEI policies over merit. Will bite him if no evidence of irregularities ends up being public.
It won't bite him IMO. His supporters started calling the mayor of Baltimore a "DEI mayor" when mayors obviously are elected (some did this to the DC mayor last night as well), and no one cares that it's not true

I have no idea, but perhaps staying on the older technology makes it more difficult to hack. I think our systems for launching nukes is the same way.

being elected isn't a recognized defense against political charges one may suffer.

Trump was elected, but is somehow literally Hitler.

Wrong. He was calling the pilot unqualified based on the dei boogeyman the maga side eats up. No one cares if it’s true as long as it has the perception of owning the libs

Quote that he was directly calling the pilot a DEI hire and the person responsible? That is not mentioned in the articles I have read.

Jacq Cerra, who is in the Army, is one of the people questioning it, saying on TikTok: 'I'm telling you right now - and they can kill me for saying it - under no circumstances is a military helicopter, especially a ******* Black Hawk, accidentally crashing into a commercial plane.

'There's no way,' she continued before bringing up the call sign. 'What's on that helicopter, you know?'

It may not have been but I’d guess it has been. But the needed information for the ATC display to put up the pertinent information hasn’t changed in many decades. The ATC radar hits the aircraft and gets a return. The radar now knows the bearing to the aircraft. The aircraft responds with its ident code and altitude. The radar now knows exactly which aircraft it just painted and its altitude. The radar now knows who, bearing, and altitude and can paint an accurate 3D position of the aircraft.

Technically didn't the plane crash into the helicopter, not the other way around? Either way I guess the conspiracies are about to be in full swing

That doesn't change anything, it means someone other than a straight white man and using that as a scapegoat for everything bad that happens is pretty disgusting
Wrong again - it means hiring based on anything other than most qualified. Could mean a straight white man if the NBA instituted a DEI policy saying their rosters have to reflect their communities.

A "system" that there is no indication whatsoever had anything to do with this

We shall see. Scary to think qualified air traffic controllers would mess up so bad to allow a commercial plane to crash into an army helicopter.

Fact or fiction - the FAA has emphasized DEI hiring instead of true merit based hiring? Personally, I would prefer it be entirely merit based given lives at risk.

How does one win an election through DEI? Are we now just saying that about every non-white man who doesn't claim to be "colorblind" like we're in 1994?
I can't, and haven't spoken to the specifics of this mayor, but it is certainly possible to win an election through DEI. if the constituents aren't voting on the person because of their merits there is room to consider it a "DEI hire".

DIVERSITY: isn't that the common argument that people want to be represented by people who look like them? be represented by "their" people?

Equity: includes the belief that everyone is owed equal outcomes regardless of input or background.

Inclusion: wants everyone to have involvement in decision making.

none of that allows for merit based considerations.

I mean if people are racist just for being white, I don't know why someone else wouldn't be considered "DEI" for being not white. its the fallacy of most of the argument from either side, it relies on simplifying rather complex topics down to such a level that the meaning loses any meaningful context.

I got the popcorn ready for when they release the information for the crew of the Blackhawk. A lot of speculation about the DEI status of the crew which may or may not be true. lol
