'24 DC OT Jordan Seaton (Future Portal Entry)

huh what? I don’t. He was breaking it out by black males which made it look like the representation was closer to the population. So I just pointed out it should just be by black coaches regardless of gender to get the proper %.

Regardless, the black representation in the sport is much higher than their population % so you would expect the # of black head coaches to reflect that statistically or at least be much closer than what it currently is now.
Not really. Two completely different skill sets between coaching and playing. just like coaching at different levels requires different skill sets. Just because you are good at one part of the sport doesn't mean you are good at others.

I have always thought of it similar to "those who can't do, teach"...."those who can't play, coach". some very obvious related exceptions (Deion), but for the most part most coaches weren't top end players.

Yes, but what % of coaches did not play? You are more likely to coach if you played the sport. There are the Mike Leach’s of the world but that isn’t a significant portion to account for such a disparity.

probably not a ton that didn't play at all, just because of the interest. but there aren't a ton that played well at the college level and went on to be coaches.

just looking at the SEC:

Heupel was obviously pretty good.
Smart was good enough for me to count here.

Clark Lea was at Vandy, but can't find any stats for him.
Beamer played back up tight end and long snapper for his dad.
Mark Stoops played at Iowa, but didn't record any stats in two of the 4 years he played.
Saban played at Kent State
Lebby signed with Oklahoma but got injured and never played.
Napier played at Furman but didn't get his first start until his 3rd year.
Mike Elko played LB at Penn, Penn not Penn State, can't find any stats on him
Sam Pittman played at Pittsburgh State and won whatever All-Conference
Kiffin was a back up QB at Fresno State

Drinkiwitz didn't play
Kelly was on a club team in college at Assumption College.
Hugh Freeze played 2 years of JUCO baseball

only 8 of the 32 NFL coaches have played, and one of those had 2 passing attempts total.

So a pretty high % play some sort of college football. We do see plenty of black assistant coaches due to that fact, imo, because there are so many black players at this level (assumption here - I don’t have the #s to know for sure if assistant coaches are better aligned with the demographic in the sport). It just has not translated into a lot getting HC positions to this point.

I'm not sure that it matters whether or not it "sits well with Boo."
I agree, but some folks were wetting themselves thinking that Boo was going to flip to CU with Seaton. If Boo thought that Seat was all Vol only for him to pull a switheroo then....

Tin foil hat moment…Isn’t IMG where Brian Niedermeyer works? Every time an IMG player has shown an interest in TN since he’s been coaching there, TN has gotten the slow burn. We sit pretty strong and then at the last minute, rug comes out.
I guess he’s into burning Oregon, Ohio St and Bama too.?

Really, you guys still talking about this clown.

He chose the circus of 🤡 Deion. Move on.

Good grief dude. No I am not counting every high profile recruit we miss as a failure. We are not gonna win all these battles. But there are certain players I have felt like the NIL has failed us. I have only wanted one coach fired and that’s Martinez. I feel like he is holding this team back. Banks is arguable although I don’t really like him.

I mean your point about being selective with resources is understandable but there are teams out there that are pouring tons of resources into getting guys. Freeze at Auburn for example. I mean he is visiting 5* FSU commit KJ Bolden. Why aren’t we visiting these guys? My agenda? My agenda is simply this. I want the best players. I want Spyre and TN to do everything they can to get those players. That’s the agenda. If that’s not your agenda then why be a fan? Don’t you want TN to be the powerhouse college football program? Good grief man.
You have nailed the issue. Free speech is what it is, but your EVIDENT faith in your own FEELINGS also is what it is. How in the heck do you feel YOU know what is BEST for the program enough to throw up concern flags? IF the ISSUE is in fact we were outbid and did not counter with an offer that exceeded a market value ceiling set by staff and collective efforts, so be it. Way too many alternatives in the portal to trigger emotional responses with free speech DURING THE PROCESS. Especially in the portal world where winning a HS bidding war does not mean that player even if they meet EXPECTATIONS are back for their second year.

Best use of NIL for BOTH acquisition and retention is a tough thing to INTELLIGENTLY address without the knowledge that the staff has and can share with the collectives. The impact of winning ANY one bid CAN create losses with other prospects and current rooms. EXPECTATIONS of EVERYTHING THEY CAN DO to win a string of individual battles is short sighted at best. Posting multiple times daily with negative value add offerings cannot possibly help the program and DOES have the potential to make the staff and collective efforts harder with ALL prospects. Pretty sure if I had a prospect in my family I would be monitoring these boards. Kind of like trying to justify fumbles and interceptions, would be really tough if the player does it often and even worse if they try to justify them.

Measuring the success on signing days is nearly worthless now, Measuring each years acquisition efforts now has to be addressed further down the road. That will be especially true of the ROI calculations on NIL dollars in the brave new NIL and portal world.

Seaton pushing the race angle for choosing to play at CU is hilarious. How many assistants on the staff are black? A good amount, with one being our freaking DC! We also have a Hispanic DB coach (for now). I don't remember UT ever having more black assistants than UT and the Vols were historically one of the most progressive southern schools before, during and after the Civil Rights Movement.

Seaton's black HC explanation is a cop out and points to "possible" (emphasis on POSSIBLE) reverse racism on him and his family's part. Honestly, had we had fewer injuries, better overall QB play and fairer officiating that lead to us being in the hunt for the CFP then we probably aren't having this discussion. Also, winning and dropping in the polls twice was ridiculous and especially when we obliterated Vandy in the last regular season game.

If you choose to ignore idiots and live in reality, you will notice how ignorant this world has become. Seaton is an attention whore, just like a majority of kids in his position. I dislike Deion and the situation; but let him say what he wants. When everything is racist, the word racist loses it's true meaning... Just like Cancel Culture, all you need to do is tell 'em to eff off and continue working and you can't be canceled in many cases. If the guy wants to play for someone that looks like him, that's his preference. Let him live the Colorado dream.... and go 4-8 then transfer.

You summed up my outlook to a T (pun intended).

Hey, Mods! I found a great place to dump the last 40 pages of this thread....

(I thought the RF was supposed to be "no politics, covid, or hot button issues". 🤷)

@Freak
Unfortunately they overlap from time to time.

In fairness, the recruit did make it a racial issue, so it really is relevant to this thread.

I thought I heard the Basilio crew say he isn't there anymore.

I am a Falcon and Braves fan and have always enjoyed watching Prime play and have a friend who is friends with him and used to be a Cowboy chaplain. However, he is going to far with how he is handling these young men and his program. I do not think he will have success. When good coaches leave programs for lateral moves who are outstanding coaches and you start hiring people with no experience as well as promoting a crap culture of look at me guys, you will fail and he is failing even with this one win. He lost his 24 and 25 QB recruits and several other who he did not want to lose. This race baiting crap has went to far. I am pulling for him to fail at coaching and get better at life and look to unite and not divide. Dr. King would approve of that path.
