Derek Chauvin trial

What are the choices before the jury? That will make the difference IMO. I think they overshot on charge unless the jury can consider lesser charges.
I don't know. I won't be paying attention to the trial, either.

Does the jury determine the sentence in MN?
Found this on a Minnesota Criminal Defense Attorney's website:
The jury’s verdict must be unanimous in all cases. However, the defendant court request the jury may render a verdict on the concurrence of a specified number of jurors fewer than that required by law. This must be approved by the court. If a person is found guilty, he or she will be sentenced during a subsequent hearing.

Is this on TV anywhere? How long are they expecting it to go?

My guess is that they'll convict him of something but it'll get overturned on appeal. In the end he'll serve very little jailtime. He did exactly as his training told him
CNN and HL News.

There's a second degree murder charge, a second degree manslaughter charge, and a third degree murder charge.

I suspect Chauvin will be found guilty on one of the two lesser charges.

Excellent point. The officer could be following SOP with that move for that amount of time and thus be found innocent. But that procedure needs drastic attention. I mean, once the person is subdued and cuffed there should be no need to maintain that "hold" on them.
They need better methods to subdue someone..... with all our technology..... surely they can come up with something that works...... I feel a lot of these incidents could prevented if the cops actually had devices that worked...... anytime it becomes a physical restraint..... there is a chance this happens.

The defense attorney literally just blamed it on them. Saying that the bystanders "distracted officers from helping" Floyd with their comments 🙄
That has a small semblance of truth.... I ran from the cops one time..... the cops were very distracted by the crowd bc they have no idea what is getting ready to go down.

You have that and then you have cops that are just douche nozzles that don't GAS about the people or the law and feel untouchable because cops protect cops.

Yep. And the s*** will hit the fan. I think that's why Zimmerman walked. They overshot the charges and got nothing.

I'd say that outcome is very unlikely. The defense is going to argue that Floyd died because of drugs, not because of the defendant's knee on his neck. To render the defendant not guilty of murder you have to believe that defense, which makes it impossible to convict on the lesser charges.

I believe it will be all or nothing. And since everyone believes cops in a courtroom, the defendant will be found not guilty of everything.

Hope I'm wrong

No Zimmerman walked because of the 'stand your ground' law.

It didn't matter what the charges were, the defense found their path and it would've made him a free man no matter what they charged him with as that law made Zimmerman's actions justified

a drug OD killed Floyd, no matter how stupid Chauvin was, that is an actual fact

lol, no that is not an actual fact. But if it makes you feel better, have at it :). Its kinda funny these days that 'facts' can vary based on the strength of conviction of your opinion.

I'm not saying Chauvin shouldn't serve time - I think he will and should, but there's video out there of well before GF was on face down on the ground with his hands cuffed. The cops tried to seat him inside the squad car several times and he ended up pushing his way out, was uncooperative and they eventually put him on the ground, face down. I don't think it changes the verdict in all of this, but GF didn't help himself any and Chauvin sure didn't help himself.

He should have been released and all charges dropped the second the city paid out that ransom money.

That's right, I forgot the stand your ground component. However, I thought I remembered there being a controversy about the DA being pressured to go for 2nd degree even though they felt they could not get Zimmerman for that.
