Derrick Henry...New Car.....Bama shenanigans?

We all have options. I have seen many poor kids who were willing to work hard become successful. Coming from a poor background does not doom you unless you let it. Just as coming from a wealthy family guarantee success. I worked as a farm hand, sawmill worker, masonry laborer and a lot of other jobs no one but illegals will work today when I was young. My dad was born in a log house. Neither he or I ever believed anyone owed us anything we did not earn and that's how my sons were raised. Like I said in the previous post; they can always join the military. They are not owed anything just because God gave them athletic ability. (Lord I hope the God haters don't go after me now). And they can choose to actually study and earn a degree that can be turned into a good job. Many do just that. Some choose not to.

I shoveled horse crap every Summer during high school. I get your point. I simply think the choices are much harder, and thee kids more naive, than you want to acknowledge.

This is the crux of it. We are having two separate debates here.

One is the morality of the rules themselves. Which most of us would agree upon. The NCAA sucks.

The other is whether or not cheating is taking place, which again we would most agree upon. Bama cheats. Period.

The arguing starts with whether or not the morality of the rule justifys the cheating, and if certain schools get away with more.

My position is the rules suck and need to be changed, but right now breaking said rules creates a competitive disadvantage when one school is allowed to get away with more than other schools. I absolutely think this is the case with Bama.

Bama writer seems to think this is rationalizing on field performance. I think it is common sense. Rationalization isn't needed, it's reality.

Saying that only Bama gets away with it ignores several examples to the contrary. Everyone is getting away with it now. And I imagine that won't change, at least not in the near term.

What's immoral is the school's making boatloads of cash from these kids - with the promise that if you work hard you will get a degree. That's fine, it works for the smart ones. For the other 98%, the one's that don't make it to the Sunday payoff, they end up trying to peddle that sports science or underwater bong making degree into the real world. I'm sorry to say this, but college football is big business with HUGE money at stakes. The only "pros" involved are the schools raking in the cash and the NCAA raking in their take.

The problem I have with the boatloads of cash argument is what that money goes towards...all of the non-revenue sports.

Slippery slope for sure...if they compensate the revenue generators based on the way some are suggesting, then some athletic scholarships will be lost no doubt.

I look at NCAA sports scholarships as an opportunity - how it is taken advantage of (or not) is up to the individual.

At the non-major schools, you are correct. The major football/basketball schools would be fine.

I think even at those schools some athletic programs (e.g. rowing, tennis, golf, volleyball) could be in serious danger of being dropped.

Many of them would be dropped tomorrow if Title IX were repealed. I don't mean that to sound like my preference.

Maybe, but the whole cars, suits, money funneling through that former player were all very public instances and the NCAA never really seemed to care.

And before you change the argument, I'm not saying I necessarily agree the NCAA should have these rules. But as long as they are in fact rules, they should be enforced equally. Same with Miami, Auburn, and anyone else who won championships during cheating periods.

And I'm not saying Bama is the only one that gets away with it, I'm saying they are the most cavalier about it WHILE it's happening. The fact that the NCAA doesn't care at least indicates some sort of bias here.

Did your jobs take a toll on your body? Did you risk concussions every single day?

Less melodramatically, did your efforts make over a hundred million dollars for the school? Using your math for Alabama, the school could have provided all you listed plus given all 85 scholarship players $35k cars and it would have still added up to less than 10% of what the football program earned for the school in 2013.

I get the "I don't feel sorry for them" position, but it's morally indefensible.

You can get a concussion just from hitting your head against something. I don't feel sorry for these football players. They chose to do it. I'd love a free education when most have 30k in debt.

I meant both men's and women's programs.

And I get that. My point is that there are programs that a lot of schools already wish they could scrap.

And I should be clear that I don't think putting athletes on the payroll is a simple option. The football team can't get paid unless the women's rowing team is, too.

Well, we didn't have their bias for quite a while. Maybe they warmed up to us.

C'mon Burger. You're better than that. Did your college job entail slamming your head into a 300 pound man for hours on end?

Wow ok like I implied you support a corrupt racket, scam or mafia type system. Good for you. You would probably be good as North Korea's next leader, at least in training.

See how easy that was.

I am all for the little guy not disclosing his full revenue for the week when the mob comes calling, which is what Henry is doing. IMO Good for him. I think there should be a group pic of everyone's car with cash laying on the hood.

Cheating... :rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

You and Bamawrtiter are made for each other. Corn dog batter for brains and cheating go hand in hand with LSU and Alabama.

Given that you changed positions halfway through the discussion, you're probably really familiar with recognizing defeat.

It's easy to spot defeat in you. Here are the steps I used:
1) you made an ignorant statement
2) I asked you to prove you're ridiculous statement
3) you provided zero proof and instead interjected some lame post about Facebook as an obvious attempt to salvage any pride you had left after your argument became invalid.

Presto! You are defeated. Trying to use a straw man to save face just makes you look even more ignorant.

I have no idea what Bamawriter's comments have to do with mine, actually we rarely agree.

As to you, well, that is easy, in your veiled attempt to cover up your lack of understanding of the subject matter, you have resorted to insults. The problem with that is your insults are not very good, I am half expecting you to tell me the "jerk store called" (Seinfeldism).

As for Henry and the rest of the players, I am hoping they start collecting big money. Cash is best.

It's actually making me feel weird that our positions are similar on this.

You went from accepting the possibility of UT cheating but rationalizing it because Bama cheats more, to saying that I need to prove that UT cheats. You didn't like being called of for rationalizing, so you completely changed from a morally relativistic argument to a morally unassailable one.

I'm willing to discuss the former, as you were at least being intellectually honest. I'm not going to lower myself to the latter.
