Not sure how old you guys on here are but I can tell you all of you something. I started going to UT games in 1978 for the next 18 years I never missed a game (home or away). In 96 my wife and I had our first child so I missed three games until my daughter was born. After that I went to every game up to 2006. During that time I saw some great players and great teams. Right now I rank this teams talent with the late 70's talent that struggled to beat anyone. There is not a single team or year since that time has this UT team been so bad and very little talent as they are now. Even the 88 5-6 had a lot of talent just a lot of bad luck to start the season. As that team finished 11-1 the next season.

I get where you're coming from.I've been going to games since the early 80's. This team wasn't loaded with top tier talent but there is zero chance that Vandy had better talent across the board than us. I'm not blaming Butch for the state of the program , however that Vandy game was embarrassing. When the NFL draft rolls around you'll see how many more Vols get drafted than Vandy players. This year and next year.

I'm always suspicious when other SEC coaches are commending our coach. The only coach they haven't commended the last few years was Bruce Pearl (and Kiffin) and he kicked everybody's arse.

P.S.-I want a coach that everybody hates like James Franklin.

What SEC coach actually commended Butch? Don't recall that.

Every coach makes bad decisions.... but we were the least penalized team, and we beat a ranked team this year. And 1 play away from beating 2 ranked teams this year. That's pretty good for year 1 in the Butch Jones era.

In my view yes. He had a pretty messed up roster to play with and yet he still managed to make me more excited than ever to watch games... The stretch from the Georgia to Bama was amazing, I had such a spring in my step. I leapt out of my seat screaming with happiness for the first time as a Vols fan this year during the Georgia game, so he must have done something right!

Talent must be developed and that is placed on the coaching staff. As I have said before, One of Fulmer downfall was not developing his talent to play in the SEC. Also, consider during his last years the SEC became the head of the class over all other conferences. Developing talent is something that Dooley and company could not do either. Think about. Recruits are 17 and 18 year old kids that has only played high school ball in one state. Recruiting numbers are only good on signing days and through Summer once these kids steps on the field then those numbers are gone and then they are ranked as college players. As good as Dooley class were the high school talent never translated into elite college talent much less SEC talent. Now Jones must take the talent he is recruiting and turn it into college talent. If he does that and continues to recruit well year after year then and only then will our great Vols teams be back.

I agree with everything you just said but we were talking about talent. The NFL draft is a pretty good indicator. There were more NFL guys on this years roster than were on Vandy's team.

Who outside of the O line is going into the NFL. Last year UT had several but I think Vandy had some too. The fact is Vandy and UT are closer in talent right now than I have ever seen. I set in Nashville 1982 the night that Willie Gault returned a punt for a touchdown and UT lost that game. Vandy finished that season 8-4 with a loss to Air Force in the bowl game. But their talent was not great just had a lot of luck and good bounces that year.

AJ Johnson for sure. Sapp and Neal will definitely get a shot. McCullers, Jaquez Smith, Cory Miller, Walls

There were? Who from UT other than 2-3 OL, maybe McCullers and Neal. Vandy has 3-4 guys who will certainly be drafted plus they had more depth than us...didn't see them playing any walkons like UT.

I personally don't know if AJ will make it in the NFL. Not saying he won't but his speed will be a factor. Maybe it was other players not making plays and he had was trying to chase them but after a player got out of the pocket, around ends he looked really slow.

I didn't say anything about any of these guys being All-stars. I'm simply saying each one of them will get an opportunity to play at the next level.

I'd like to see them play with more aggressiveness in the trenches and scheme wise the next 2 years or he won't make it. No more standing up OL and DL please. I know techniques and calls are involved but we need to disrupt on D and shove around people on O. Badly.

It's really pathetic how so many on here, after the fact, want to excuse the Vandy loss by arguing that they had a pure talent advantage. There is no objective data to support this argument. The recruiting rankings of the players on the field for us were so much higher than the players for Vanderbilt, it's almost absurd. But of course these people will just ignore those rankings (it's funny how they don't do that when praising Butch's current class though).

Vegas thought we were better. The recruiting services said we were much much better. And the draft will probably show we were better. But, since we lost, coach lovers are desperate for any excuse to remove any single iota of accountability from the coaching staff. It's sad to see so many supposed UT fans so ready to bad mouth every possible thing about the program (even without a shred of objective evidence) as long as it makes the coaches look better in comparison. What is it with you people and your crazy man crushes?

Vandy was a bad loss, obviously. One that, imo, doesn't happen if Pig just stands there instead of blocking. My goodness how 1 play can define a season. Hypothetical of course, but we go to a bowl and beat a top 10 team if he doesn't get a penalty there and the season is a great success with things to build and work on. Actually ahead of schedule. He makes that block, we never recover in the game and now people want coaches gone.

That play or game didn't alter my opinion on the staff.

I thought the coaching or lack thereof was way more evident in the Oregon and Florida games, especially the Florida game. I'm not advocating coaching changes or throwing in the towel at this point, but there has got to be improvement coaching wise and I expect there will be.
