Discussion of gay rights, religion, abortion...oh yeah, and Pete Rose

What I mean OE, and I state this is strictly my personal opinion and part of the reason I left Christianity, is that the word of a particular church is not that of the teachings of a God as much as it is the teachings of a single person standing behind a podium.

I find Christianity hard to bite in to when there are so many sects saying the other got it wrong.

Fair enough!

:hi:

Volingatorland, ever single argument you have made goes back to what I said to you in the CoC thread. You had a poor representation of Christianity by seeing it through Catholicism. Yes, Catholics believe that you are born with sin, but Jesus said "...unless you become like a little child you will not inherit the kingdom of Heaven." My faith does not teach that a child is born with his parents sins. And yes, Catholicism teaches that you can pay for your sins to be forgiven. However, the Bible teaches that only through the blood of Christ can sins be forgiven.

Yes, it does revert to that thread, but I feel the portion of my explanation that you're missing is that I left the Catholic church when I was 13. Until I was 21 or 22 I bounced from church to church trying to find what I was looking for. I'm not by any means saying the church is wrong. I do not believe my lack of belief in the religion stems from Catholicism, rather from the vast differences of all the Christian religions. Catholics believe that they are forgiven of their sins at mass, after the Act of Contrition and Communion, which in their eyes are the body and blood of Christ.

I'm sorry if I sound redundant, but my beliefs are what they are for that reason. At least I'm consistent.

And ridethelightning, might I ask this: If you do not believe that Christians are born with sin, then what is baptism for in your denomination?

ridethelightening being church of Christ, you believe that you can lose your salvation? can you explain how that is possible, i've always wondered what is it that tells you this.

In my faith, you have to have an awareness of good and evil to commit a sin. Baptism signifies you realize you are sinner, you confess of your sins and repent to walk in newness of life. It does not mean that you will never sin again, but if you confess of your sins, and you have been washed in the blood of Christ, your sins will be forgotten.

Not being critical just asking a serious question.

Why would differences in the denominations alone lead you away from a belief in God?

I also have the same problems with many of the denominations which is my main reasoning for not attending a church. I read the bible and have an understanding of my relationship with God, I don't need or want someone telling me how I should believe in this matter or that matter and why. I seek the answers for myself in the study of the bible and form my own understanding, this works much better for me.

so do you believe you can lose your salvation? i have a friend that is coc and he says you can. i believe once saved, always saved. and yes you still sin, but you should ask for forgiveness

Do you believe in once saved, always saved?

Which you answered while I was typing.

Let me first hear the true meaning behind once save, always saved. I don't think I fully understand that argument.

so you can do anything you want if you have once been saved as long as you ask for forgiveness?

It's not strictly the differences of the denominations, that is just a small part of the reason.

Other reasons include:
I believe in evolution
I'm pro-choice
I found happiness in a non-Christian philosophy (this is the big one)

What I mean with the denominations, is that it led me to believe that if there are so many takes on this religion, what makes any of them right? I couldn't answer that question, so I went elsewhere.

from what i know some coc's believe you can lose your salvation meaning you have to ask Jesus to come into your heart and save you more than once if you get off track.

so you can do anything you want if you have once been saved as long as you ask for forgiveness?

Generally speaking, a lot of people believe this. The argument is once you are saved you will not "want" to do what ever you want, whenever you want, because you have the Holy Spirit to guide you.

Once you are saved you cannot lose your salvation because you are in the father's hand and no one can pluck you out.

if you are a true Christian you aren't going to go out and do whatever you please and just ask forgiveness. you are going to strive to be as Christ like as possible, but yes you will sin, and you need to ask for forgiveness.

however if you believe you believe, there's no taking it back once you're saved.

To me, it sounds like the same argument. If you have been washed in the blood of Christ and you commit a sin, you confess and repent.

I believe in evolution as well.
I struggle with the abortion issue, I would be closest to pro choice.
I at one point had a hard time and struggled with my beliefs but eventually came to my own understanding of God that is somewhat different from many of the denominations out there so i can respect finding your own peace and happiness in a non Christian philosophy.

1.) I believe in it but I think it is silly that T-rex evolved into a turkey! NATGEO really wasted a lot of money and time on that one!

2.) I am a freedom loving mother trucker, but why doesn't the child have a voice?

3.) I had a similar path, I grew up in the hardcore indy baptist circuit where legalism is the path to god.

I have a dear friend who is a pastor of a CoC church.

Do you believe Jesus saves, or baptism saves?

How about...a baptism through Jesus saves. Jesus saves us, but there are acts to show our faith in Him.

Can anyone argue why Jesus felt the need to be baptized, himself?
