Disney: The Most Evil Business In The World

Lightyear actually lost a lot of $$$ at box office...

Yes, there are ancillary revenue streams and the D+ impact but Wall Street viewed the results as very negative...

Nope. They were ahead before they ever cashed a streaming check or sold merch.

Nope, they only keep 40-50% of the receipts from box office. The theaters keep the rest...

The $200M cost doesn't even include marketing costs....

Even Pixar's head admits it was a financial flop.

Thanks for correcting me.

They wanna make $ on movies, but the IP is where the real $ is.

TMNT was the most successful inde movie of all time and they completely ****ed up the sequels solely and intentionally for the sake of toy sales

Yes, the IP is extremely valuable. Those who are predicting doom and gloom for Disney fail to recognize this.

Now, Disney has a couple major issues:

1. They haven't figured out a profitable streaming model. This isn't a "woke" issue but a leadership issue.

2. They are pushing political/social viewpoints at the expense of profits. At a minimum, they cost themselves $150 million in receipts for including a same sex kiss in Lightyear (Typically, Disney movies do 2-3x the gate in international markets and Lightyear only did 1x because of being banned in many countries).

This is the first I've ever seen someone try to argue Lightyear didn't flop. There's a reason they quickly turned around to make "Toy Story 47, Andy in Hospice"
This is the first I've ever seen someone try to claim that, "More and more people have been turning off Star Wars for years."

There have been 5 Star Wars films produced since the franchise was acquired by Disney in 2012. That includes the 3 sequels plus Rogue One and Solo. They have all been released into theaters since December of 2015. Collectively, those 5 movies have accumulated a domestic gross of over $2.8 billion. That is an average of $560 million per movie.

More blah blah blah .... move on folks.

Star wars is big but I've heard bad things about the franchise since the prequels. I think star wars is overrated but it makes money. Buncha nerds if you ask me.

I'm sorry, but saying that people are turning away from Star Wars is just brain dead stupid. You want to think that, because it fits your "Disney went woke, so consumers hate everything they do now," narrative.

The Star Wars box office data since 2015 does not support a word of that, however. This thread is hyper-ridiculous.

To follow-up:

I agree with comments that Disney is not going anywhere, anytime soon but to say they are not struggling or losing market share is putting your head in the sand.

There is a lot rumors that Star Wars has gone so bad that there are discussions to even sell LucasArts. Clearly Star Wars has been a disaster, here are Youtube videos about the issues:

You can examine Youtube and see video after video about how the Mario movie is breaking records and is major shot fired against Disney. Nintendo World has opened with Universal in Japan and is a success. It may not be long before we see Nintendo World being put in Orlando to directly compete with Disney and I think it will.

The Super Mario Brothers movie could be the highest grossing animated movie all-time once the dust settles. I think Disney is definitely noticing this as a threat. Nintendo has tons of IP that, until recently, was relegated to video games but translates well into animated films/characters that can win the child/family audience away from Disney.

Regarding the Prequels vs. Sequel Star Wars Trilogy. I will say that the Prequels were not great but I don't see the utter frustration and division like I do with the Sequels. Look at online movie critic after online movie critic that talk about how bad the Sequel Trilogy was. Some of these guys, like the Critical Drinker, do have legitimacy. I mean Russell Crowe appeared on the Critical Drinker the other day.

The sad thing is that everyone loves Rogue One and most consider it the best movie since the Return of the Jedi or perhaps even Empire Strikes Back but after Rogue One, Disney has produced mediocre to bad titles and has yet to match Rogue One in performance.

The Force Awakens was serviceable because it took little risk but the series started to decline after the Last Jedi. People were onboard until that movie. In ticket sales, it won't show until the following movie and it was pretty telling once Solo flopped because so many fans were frustrated/upset by the Last Jedi.

I have Rogue One ranked 2nd behind Empire. I loved that one.

7 and Rogue One were great, but every other Disney SW film has been trash.

Mandalorian is solid, Andor is good, but Boba Fett sucked.

Overall a mixed bag.

I can pretty much see this although Mandalorian has gone down hill as well. I am not 100% sure, I just hear reviews. The last Star Wars content that I actually watched from start to finish was the Last Jedi but I see a lot of clips and discussions on it. I did not invest in Disney+ nor do I plan to so I won't be able to get many of the shows.

I did give the LOTR Amazon series a chance. My issue with it is that I am in Episode 6 or 7 and I still don't know what is going on. It is very boring as well. Acting is meh but isn't as bad as critics of the show make it out to be. I just get the vibe that Amazon would have had far more luck making this into a Movie than a TV Series.

In many ways, I think the TV Series/Streaming mentality is why the quality in Hollywood is dropping dramatically. You don't have many good movie writers.
