Disrespecting UT players.

Have you had valid criticisms leveled by hundreds perhaps even thousands, or tens of thousands of people who have access to your internet, your phone and your television? How about criticisms that are invalid?

I haven't. So what?

Just a note: be careful about who you attack. We don't all live in our parent's basements.

I'll have you know I was champion of the National Grocery Bagging and Stocking invitationals 3 years running. It was the epitome of high stakes, high reward.

We were even shown on ESPN the Ocho one year.

and if it does, you don't need that player

I can't imagine being a failure at anything because a random poster, who has no control over my life, called me a doo doo head on a message board

many times it goes way beyond that. Lots of things I have read make me sad to be viewed in the same group as other UT fans

the internet allows many to remove their filter and that's not always a good thing. I see no reason to do it but if it makes you feel better then go for it

That is the point I am making. People tend to support their bad behavior by saying that it shouldn't or doesn't have an impact.

It does, the question is only how much.

This is the one place that the internet has drastically hindered us. It allows anyone with a keyboard to say or do things that they could not endure if the situation was reversed and they were the object of someone's ire. What ever happened to the idea of treating others the way you want to be treated?

Honestly, I don't see where it has an impact. Most of the players today have grown up around the internet and the whole social media aspect of life today. They know when someone is just being a douche on a message board and trolling people.

If someone comes here, it's because they've built a relationship with the coaches and the players; not because of some random faceless name with a keyboard.

I made a snow gun.
They put me on the news.
I haven't checked the snow gun forums to see if there is any critique, because I don't want to subject myself to any criticism.

I hear the Ocho shelled out some serious bank to televise that event.

I've been kicked, punched, spit on, and called everything but my Christian name, yet somehow I didn't let that keep me from doing my job.

Its all about yourself. You have to be strong in mind and spirit and have confidence in yourself. People need to stop worrying about what everyone thinks or says about them. Men need to man up

If it was only one or two random faces on the internet, you have a point. What we have is thousands of people who believe that what they say and do has no impact, that is the recipe for disaster.

Is there anything wrong with civility?

This is very true and something that you have to overlook when you go on a message board.

Here is a starting point from USA today:

"I was surprised at first how many people knew who I was," McCullers said. "I'd go on the message boards and they'd be talking about me, making up nicknames."

or

"Big Dan. Mount McCullers. Shade Tree. Even The Green Mile, a reference to the movie in which the late Michael Clarke Duncan plays a man on death row.

'I don't like that one,' he said."

Nose tackle Daniel McCullers: Tennessee's big man on campus

If you want other proof that players are impacted by message boards, read "On Rocky Top" by Clay Travis. See Arian Foster, and his mother, as a more famous case study.

I have a feeling that it wouldn't matter if I posted exact quotes from everything I said, that if you don't believe that what is said on here has an impact, you won't believe that what is said on here has an impact.

As such, I am not going to waste my time, or yours, by pouring over thousands of possible sources to find a quote that I read one or two years ago from any reputable media outlet that would have links.

Of course with this admission you will claim victory because you asked me to do research for you and I declined due to time constraints and the volumes of data that I would have to reread to find you "links".

I don't see the need to be bashing recruits or players, there is no harm in saying whether you like the way they played or want them here, but it does go way overboard a lot, it is uncalled for and yes they do read it

Thousands would still be only 1% of the total

Its like saying every Alabama fan is married to their cousin. That's not fair to the 1% who are not

and a 16-17yo kid who builds their life around social media is going to realize this?

I personally see no need in bashing the players who play for UT or who want to play for UT. Especially true for those who give very little for what they get in return

You probably won't be able to function in life now because of me. I'm sorry.lol

That's the thing though; has it really had an impact? I can't think of any, or at least anything on here that the fan who doesn't peruse these forums doesn't think as well.

Besides, VolNation is a terrible gauge of what Tennessee fans are actually like IRL (as are most fan forums dedicated to a specific team) if you think about it. This is the fringe element of UT fans (I don't necessarily mean that in a bad way). Most people are more than cordial towards former players, current players, and future players, and the vast majority of those people aren't browsing VolNation.

This is what happens, Count, when you have a society that has turned virtually everyone into some sort of victim. Everyone is offended by something now. Nation of wimps.
