Dobbs needs to be the starter

I just hope whoever starts keeps the ball some in the read option to keep the defense honest. I think it really hurts the offense when the D knows the qb want keep. Last year was evidence of that.

I like Dobbs alot. Glad he's a VOL. He gave us everything he had last year but he wasn't ready. From all reports out of camp our coaches still dont think he's ready. Give em time. He'll get there.

If Dobbs isn't the starter then it is his own fault. Everyone gets the same number of practices and throws to showcase themselves to the coaching staff.

Hey I agree if he is the best QB on the team, he should start. So far, doesn't look like the best.

...for this offense to really thrive. Under normal circumstances, I'd go with seniority/experience....and thus Worley, but Dobbs lets this offense open up, full-throttle.

Was reading this article, by Fox Sports, about Freshmen who could contend for the Heisman.
Cory McCartney: Frosh Perspective: First-year players that could vie for Heisman Trophy | FOX Sports

LSU's Fournette was one of them; Hurd was another. But the problem here is, not only do we have a new front 5 on the OL, but playing Worley allows defenses to really key in on Hurd.

Dobbs is our best chance to keep defenses honest, off balance and always guessing. So, if all things are relatively equal among the QB's, in the passing game....Dobbs has to be the starter.

The way I look at it is this...Dobbs, hands down, looked the best in the Spring. Did he separate himself in practice, before that? Probably not. But, again, in a game environment, he easily looked the best. Give him the starting nod, and if he struggles a lot, then you can put Worley or Peterman in.

Nobody is saying we should be making the decisions for the staff, genius. :loco: This is a FAN forum....we all give our opinions here. Hello? Welcome to the internet?

And thank goodness that is all this is: an opinion.

Dobbs will redshirt this year. I think he's good enough from a talent perspective to start, but Worley has that veteran mentality that can't be coached. An extra year in the program will do Dobbs a lot of good to develop his game. He'll be the starter at some point in his career

This is the way I looked at Dobbs

If Dobbs gets 3rd string expect him to get redshirted this year to save year of eligibility.

With Wegzen here now, and barring injury, this would be best for Dobbs. It would give him time to get his body mechanics honed and compete as a truly mobile 5th yr Sr.

That said, Wegzyn played 21 games with 17 starts at UMASS and was benched in a loss to MAINE (didn't know Maine had a football team ;-), that's like losing to Slippery Rock). Wegzyn will be the one to go with only if all others have been carried off on a stretcher and Coach really, really wants to preserve a redshirt.

We should start Evan berry if all others are gone over wegzyn

I would be fine with running the ball for a 4 yard average and throwing a play action in there every 8th play! Alabama has not had a Heisman qb and they seem to do OK!

I will puke in my mouth if Dobbs starts. He was awful and apparently still is. You wanted attention you got it.

OP, I agree with your notion about a mobile QB. I've been saying since Favre was with the Packers that football is moving toward mobile QBs who offer a threat that pocket QBs can't. You simply give an offense another weapon when the QB can scramble for 10 yards.

Ironically, UT proved this back in the 70s with Condredge Holloway. Schuler's soph campaign proved that point again and we won a NC with Tee Martin (who scrambled some).

We need to decide what we are....a pro-style system or a read-option-run system. If we're read option, Dobbs/Petterman are the front runners. Pro-style is probably Worley.

Point - I don't think we can be "both" with the experience level of this squad and perhaps never at all. Indecision on this question IMHO will only lead to on-field confusion with ineffectual execution and disappointed fans.

Still trying to figure out why people think Dobbs is a great runner?

He is not a 'great runner'. What he is, is a QB who is not afraid to get whatever yards he can rather than throwing the ball away when he can't find an open receiver. Two yards on 3rd & 1 is a dang sight better than having to punt. And has been said over and over, Dobbs IS a dual threat QB, Worley has never shown us he is. As for the others we just have no evidence. A dual threat QB absolutely does require the opposing D to honor the possibility he just might scamper 15 or 25 yards, and THAT absolutely makes it easoer for BOTH the RB's and all receivers. It's why the term Dual Threat is given a mobile QB in the first place. No, they're not expected to be a scatback or a bowling ball fullback. Just get positive yards often enough they can't be ignored as a run threat, like Worley is.

Yeah...that's a big laugh, cause we all know that having a mobile QB NEVER makes it tougher on defenses (to have to defend the QB, too). Nick Marshall had 200+yds on us, just as a runner...last year. Just for a little perspective...ANYONE having 200+ yds on the ground is having a HELL of a game. It means between the TB and him, we had no answer. Put an average pocket passer under center, at Auburn, last year, and we likely come away with a win.

But that doesn't mean anything.
