Dobbs Starting Tonight

I have no idea what Vrabel was thinking with his comments after the game. He wasn’t very complimentary of Dobbs at all. It’s almost like he was forced to play Dobbs and didn’t like the fact that he looked far superior to the other QB option.

But it is obvious to anyone who has watched both QBs play that it isn’t even close. Dobbs was far from perfect in this game, but at least he looked like an NFL QB and actually moved the team. Given the penalties and lack of running game, it was impressive.

If Vrabel sits Dobbs next week and trots out another sub-100 yard passing game…I don’t know how that can sit well with the fans and the locker room. I think Vrabel is a higher-tier coach, but he has me puzzled here.

He hasn't watched the same games I've watched. Malik Willis MAY turn into an NFL quarterback, but he damn sure hasn't shown it so far.

He has been I camp for 1 week and is throw in against the wolves. I thought he did OK, but not great. n Lets see what happens the rest of the year. There may be a reason why he has been cut from a bunch of teams.

Wait a minute! Wait! You mean, pro players can opt out of games too?? Where are the slew of Vols-player haters who crap on our UT players for opting out? Where are ya, haters, critics, condemners, where are ya???

That's different, Woodsman. The NFL guys are getting PAID not to play. ;)

I think the coaches opted them out not the players themselves.

But I’m not against Bowl Game opt outs. With millions of dollars on the line see one last exhibition game isn’t worth it.

Unlikely. We'd have seen something by now. At least one drive. Dobbs looks the part, just needs the reps. Should have been here all along based on last nights performance. Though he made a few mistakes, he actually looked like an NFL qb. Willis rarely has.

Dobbs had a couple of balls he'd like back last night - no more than any NFL QB. His WRs sure as hell didn't help him with those drops. Those drops left points off the board. Untimely penalties as well. Overall, he looked real solid moving around, real impressive considering just coming into town. Super happy for him & can't wait to see him go next week!

In a sense, so are the college player opt-outs. They're getting paid to remain draftable and get paid as a result. No players want to end up like:
Ohio State QB Johnny Utah. He gots his knee blown out in the Rose Bowl.
Or find themselves Matt Corral-ed.

The titans Jags and Texans are in the same division bro lol. The Houston game means everything. You are correct about the Dallas game. Its likely why they trotted Dobbs out to see if he gave them a better chance next week than Malik.

If Jags beat Houston and Titans beat Jags they end with same records (8-9 9verall 6-6 division) and are 1-1 against each other in which case it goes to a tiebreaker sir. Jacksonville beat the Titans 36-22 in their first meeting. Maybe you don't follow the NFL but division mates play each other twice per season.

That would put them at either step 3 or 4 of the tiebreaking process.

If, at the end of the regular season, two or more clubs in the same division finish with identical won-lost-tied percentages, the following steps will be taken until a champion is determined.

Two Clubs
Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the clubs).
Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division.
Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games.
Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
Strength of victory in all games.
Strength of schedule in all games
Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed in all games.
Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed in all games.
Best net points in common games.
Best net points in all games.
Best net touchdowns in all games.

So basically unless Houston miraculously beats the Jags and the Titans get super healthy next week chances are slim. The Titans offense played like 3 starters tonight and their defense wasn't that much better off. It's not impossible and if he pulls it off winning next week and getting them to the playoffs it would be a huge PR win for the Titans. I think the chances Dobbs does not start next week after this performance is slim to none. I will also be rooting hard for the Texans to play spoiler Sunday.

Tennessee would have the better common game record regardless of how the Houston-Jacksonville game goes.

Yes, they would have split their series, and yes they would both be 3-2 in the division going into the game or 3-2 vs 2-3 going into the game.

Either way, the winner would have a better divisional record regardless of the Houston-Jacksonville game outcome.

For fun, let’s go further, looking at the theoretical (albeit now impossible) “what if they finished with the same record and divisional records” outcome (which isn’t currently possible anymore).

Tennessee, beat Indianapolis twice, beat Houston and the lost to Houston, beat Washington, lost to the Giants, beat Las Vegas, beat Denver, lost to Kansas City, lost to Philadelphia, lost to the Chargers, lost to the Cowboys. Their common games record is 6-6.

Going into this weekend’s game with Houston, Jacksonville: beat Washington, lost to Indianapolis twice, lost to Houston, lost to Washington, beat the Chargers, lost to the Eagles, lost to the Giants, lost to the Broncos, beat Los Vegas, lost to the Chiefs, and beat the Cowboys. Their common games record is currently 4-7 (becoming either 5-7 or 4-8 after this weekend).

Regardless of the outcome of the Jacksonville-Houston game, if both teams finished 8-9 the Jaguars would lose the common games tiebreaker 6-6 to 5-7 or 4-8.

It’s a “win and you’re in” scenario next week. If Jacksonville wins (depending on this week’s game against Houston) they either have the better overall record or get the tiebreaker by sweeping the Titans. If the Titans win, the Titans either have the better overall record or get in by the better divisional record (which one would depend on the Jacksonville-Houston result).

The CFB opt-outs, I'd prefer to see them play. But wouldn't condemn them for opting out, as it is a business decision. And for some, the once in a lifetime opportunity to achieve financial security. Bemoan their protecting their investment, so to speak. Me? NEVER!

Very simple - Willis was picked in the 3rd round and was picked as the heir apparent at QB. He is seen as the future at QB for the Titans. Dobbs was picked up as a 'body' to get through this game and give a decimated QB room some depth.

I totally agree that Dobbs earned a shot to play next week, but money and politics rule in the NFL (one of the many reasons I've grown to hate it), and the powers that be have already decided that Willis is the guy there moving forward. Dobbs' performance was like a wrench in the gears, thus Vrabel's post game reaction. At least that's my take, but it will be interesting to see what they do next week.

Me either, unless the team is in the playoffs for the National Championship. One would think if you were in the playoffs, you would break your neck to try to win it.

I noticed it too from Vrabel. I'm kinda ticked off on that last drive we didn't try and see about putting some points on the board instead of just rolling over and taking the L
Can't see him trotting Malik out there next week, if he does someone needs to look at his finances and see if he's sport betting lol

To continue down a the wrong path is is the definition of head stuck in the sand.
Smart guy would see it as an opportunity that they may have a diamond in a rough.
Honestly if Josh plays well next week. I'd send Tannehill and a few others on their way. Dobbs they can sign Dobbs for chump change, let Malik grow if they choose.
This team is in need of a rebuild Dobbs can be that stop gap.

I'm a Titans fan. But if Vrabel starts Willis next week, I'm pulling for Jacksonville.

I completely agree with you. Dobbs should get the start next week. I think Vrabel is smart enough to see that Willis doesn't give us a chance to win but we'll see how it plays out.
