Did Devoe bring in Bernard King? If so, are we suppose to believe we landed him cleanly? That was one of the biggest recruiting coups of that decade if I am not mistaken. This is just purely speculation of course, can someone with more knowledge of that era enlighten this board?
How did Green tank the program with 4 straight NCAAT appearances?

Not slamming Devoe but did he ever knowingly bend or break a rule to gain an advantage in recruiting? I did not keep up with b-ball during his tenure.
:thumbsup:I've watched, very closely, DeVoe and Pearl coach form back in their big 10 days...I will take Don DeVoe's integrity, word, etc. any day of the week over Pearl. No comparison in those categories.
No doubt Pearl can coach, never said he could not...but I was absolutely dismayed when Tennessee hired him, I felt then that this day was coming, but that if he won most fans would forgive. My hope back then was that getting a job like Tennessee with its history would deter Pearl, but I knew from experience it would likely lead to more arrogance and dubious behavior.
Look at his history...what surprises you folks??? It was all there from the start, Iowa, U.S.I. (but no one really investigates D2 unless you are absolutely blatant), and at Milwaukee.
I am not a Pearl basher, he is a hell of a basketball coach (as long as lying and disregard for rules and a school's integrity does not matter) and I rarely post anything. Not that anyone gives a rat's rear end about my opinion, but he should go, he should have never came.
Pearl gone along with Kiffin gone would make me feel a whole lot better about being a Vol Fan For Life.
HatVol had it right all along and that does not surprise me either.
Go Vols.

If it were ever revealed that Don Devoe knowingly broke ANY rule while recruiting, you'd find me wandering the streets five years later, muttering, "....Devoe...even Devoe..." I'd say that his honesty was one of the things that kept him from being a great recruiter.
Devoe was a great coach using ball control in the days before there was a shot clock. If I remember correctly some games we would get a lead early in the second half and dribble it for 12 minutes and win like 20 to 18.
The shot clock was added at some point and he could not adjust which is why he was fired.
However, I do not remember any allegations of recruiting during his tenure.
With that said, Bernard King was constantly getting into trouble and Devoe always managed to get him out of it somehow.
Not saying, just saying.
