Don't know if true but I'm not happy...(Memphis St series)

StatSheet Projects Memphis as NCAA Tournament 10 Seed: 02/10/2012 - Memphis Basketball - Every Man A Tiger

this article is as of today. they are projected a 10 seed and are pretty close to the edge, one or 2 bad losses and you will be sweating it out. if memphis takes care of business as they should have the last 2 years they'll be in, but as pastner has proven he is more than capable of losing games in c-usa, and not winning the conference.

they are far from a lock.

wow a PROJECTION from something called "statsheet" if that's not gospel...i don't know what is! :good!:

Memphis has:

a record of 17-7
a RPI of 18
a SOS of 8
2 top 50 wins
no bad losses

plus, nothing but CUSA teams the rest of the way...should be 25-26 wins going into selection sunday...and i bet we take the auto-bid.

yes it was. pastner was expected to win the c-usa, he had the most talented team in the conference by far. had a 5* and about 5 4* on his roster, he had plenty of talent on the team. media expected a c-usa title, and ncaa appearance.

as i already stated cuonzo has already more than exceeded expectations of everyone in the country. recruits realize that he has exceeded expectations, and that pastner has not even met expectations.

you're gonna tell me that when pastner was hired you memphis fans said well in 3 years we expect to have no c-usa titles, 1 ncaa appearance, and 0 ncaa wins? no i dont think so, there for the last 3 years have been a dissapointment.

yes, i am...most figured it would take 2-3 years just to sniff the NCAA's again...i guess you missed Cal's scorched earth policy in leaving.

heres the preseason college hoops write up on memphis in pastners first year:

2009 NCAA Basketball Rankings – No. 19 Memphis Last Month: 24
Coach Josh Pastner has been putting together a pretty impressive recruiting class after taking over from Coach John Calipari. Many have counted the Tigers out, but with their current recruiting crop, look for them to win more than 25 games next season! The unexpected addition of Elliot Williams makes Memphis a Top 20 team if he’s given permission to play immediately by the NCAA. If not, then they’re still worthy of being ranked, just much closer to Nr. 25.

2010-#12. Memphis Tigers
Memphis is ranked this high solely because of the recruiting class they brought in. After Calipari left them for dead a what seems like a decade ago, Josh Pastner has quickly reloaded with one of the best incoming classes in the country. They'll rely heavily on freshmen, but the Tigers are my favorite to win Conference USA next season.

2011- #10 Memphis Tigers
With the outstanding crop of freshman the Tigers had last season, they were highly-touted preseason picks, coming in ranked 10th to 15th in most projections. As it turns out, the expectations were too high as the young Memphis squad struggled with consistency throughout most of the season. Two things will help turn their fortunes around for next year. One, they are a year older. The experience they gained throughout the year showed in winning the Conference USA tournament, a league that wasn’t rife with outstanding teams but was very competitive, especially among the top eight teams.
Two, Wesley Witherspoon will be there or he won’t. But he realized that it is really up to him as to whether he wants to be, and not that the Tigers can’t thrive without him. Josh Pastner has a lot to learn on the sidelines granted, but his handling of Witherspoon and the earlier Jelan Kendrick situation shows that the guy has a spine and that team goals are the only ones that matter.

notice a common trend? not one of these years did he meet expectations.

haha the fact you dont know what statsheet is lets me know you know nothing about basketball. haha you obviously cant add either, they have 7 games left even if they won them all theyd have 24 wins.

if it makes you feel better to know a name, ESPN has you as a 9th seed, which isnt good either. 1 or 2 losses to a c-usa team, which i've already said pastner has shown he can do, will put you on the bubble.

please, our own fans will tell you we've been overrated since Cal left...i call it the "Cal effect"

my projection at the beginning of the year was 26 wins...cusa tourney title...and 1 NCAA win...no reason that can't happen.

yeah, when folks talk about NCAA hoops "statsheet" is the first thing to always come up. :loco:

8-9 seed sounds about right...depends on who we draw...have fun in the CIT or CBI (if you make the post season)

well you're the only one. look at the rankings i just showed you every single year pastner was predicted to make the ncaa. he has underachieved mightily and rational memphis fans agree.

heres a quote from josh when he was hired: : “We don’t want to have any slippage. We want to keep it rocking and rolling. And the way to do that is, we’ve got to get great players. We’ve got to coach them up. We’ve got to make sure they are prepared in every way possible.”

in case you cant comprehend, hes saying we dont want to go backwards. they clearly have!

ever heard of coach-speak? Pastner is progressing on pace...

that easy to say now. any memphis fan i have ever talked to said they expected to not win the c-usa in 2 years, and to not have a ncaa tournament win in 2 years.

and whether you want to admit it or not recruits pay attention to the preseason rankings. so whether you think theyre over hyped doesnt matter, they see the rankings before the year. so when these kids see memphis being ranked pre season top 10, and not finishing the season ranked now for 3 years thats a dissapointment to them.

Big East teams already recruited Memphis. UT had trouble, but landed Stokes, so there was a threat (however remote) that UT would start to make up ground in Memphis. This squashes that.

If Petino, Wright, Calhoun wanted to recruit a Memphis kid, they wouldn't have to play the 'We play ehre every otehr year card", just like Roy and K didn't have to with McDonald and Williams.

I don't buy it. UT's standing in Memphis has little to do with this series or Pearl would have seen better results while handling some of the best Tiger teams that the school has ever seen.

recruits like the Barton brothers? Joe Jackson? maybe Shaq Goodwin?

you talk to alot of recruits, lol?

as i said the more you dis statsheet the dumber you look, which is about to its limit. most college basketball fans who want to look up stats and have been around for a little while know that statsheet is usually the best place to go...

yea as things stand 8 or 9 is right, but like ive said now a thousand times, i bet pastner loses another game before the end of the season.

worst case we'll be nit, you should know something about that as a memphis fan, while we were in the tournament 2 years ago you were being embarrassed in the nit. you may wanna reaclimate yourself to it too, because once you join the big east you'll be in the nit frequently.

if i want stats i go to espn...

as for the BE...UConn finished #9 in the Big East...they won the NCAA title.

ever heard of coach-speak? Pastner is progressing on pace...

do you have an excuse for everything?

pastner says we expect to stay elite...you say its coach speak

09 season experts say they are top 20...you say over hyped

10 season experts say they are top 10...you say over hyped

11 season experta say they are top 15...you say over hyped

its easy to look back and say oh yea we were over hyped, at what point do you look back and say oh we just dissapointed we didnt meet expectations? you were projected to finish c-usa champs, and around top 10, you arent even ranked and may not win c-usa or win the tourney.

according to the experts all 3 years so far have been underachieving and a dissapointment for pastner. the only one not admitting this is you.

you talk to alot of recruits, lol?

are you really this dumb? the guys you just listed all came in in josh full first year recruiting. the effects of underachieving havent really taken effect, do you not get that?

try and comprehend this, that class was #2 in the country, pastner since that class has dissapointed 2 years in a row, so that makes 3 dissaponiting years, so it starts to take effect. guess what? since that #2 class, he hasnt had one top 25 class since, and has started losing kids from memphis.

guess what heres something for you to read:

in the last 2 years there have been 11 players come out of the memphis area that memphis recruited, they signed ONE of them.

try and tell me recruits arent starting to notice

thank you for looking dumber and dumber...you dont go to espn for the best stats...and yes uconn finished #9 and went on to win the championship. they also beat these teams during the season:

#2 michigan state
#9 kentucky
harvard
#12 texas
vs tennessee

sorry but memphis hasnt won any of those games except tennessee.

point being, without beating teams like that ooc, uconn may not have even been in the tournament. so memphis either has to win games like that, which they havent shown they can, or have a very good record in the big east conference play, which isnt likely since pastner cant even win the c-usa.

are you really this dumb? the guys you just listed all came in in cals full first year recruiting. Cal still coaches, Memphis? and i'm the dumb one? lol the effects of underachieving havent really taken effect, do you not get that? moreover Shaq goodwin is a 2012 player...but yeah, i'm the dumb one! :post-4-1090547912:

tell it to Goodwin, Wilson, and Johnson...we're still after Parker...we don't only focus on Memphis kids.

Shaq was named to the mcdonald's all american roster today.

i edited it right after posted, sorry i still associate the 2. thats one guy genius, once again pastner has not had a top 25 class since the #2 class, explain why?

uhm by scout and rivals, oh and by your useful stat tool of espn. they were behind ky and ranked #2 by everone, way to look dumb again.

exactly been here 2 1/2 years and is already losing memphis kids. thats sad.

once again you have a couple decent recruits coming in, you missed on memphis guys again this year, and your class isnt top 25. thats all signs of going downhill

i needed a good laugh today...

yes you know the people who are paid to do this, not the guy who uses espn for stats.

uhm lets see who's gonna beat you? you act like your undefeated in c-usa, pastner losses to c-usa teams like it's his hobby. im pretty sure he'll do it again.

what makes you right and everybody else wrong? you are literally the only person i have ever met who honestly says...ok when pastner was hired i said ok, were gonna suck in year one, year 2 we'll suck again, and in year 3 we will get a little better hopefully. i have never seen anyone except you expect this, even pastner expected more.

canes can i ask you a question please?

what were your expectations for pastner's first 3 years. i just want to make sure im not hallucinating in thinking that memphis fans expected more than what they have received so far?

Honestly, I thought the program would be decimated. I expected recruiting to fall off and expected to miss the dance for multiple years. That was right after Cal left. When Pastner was hired, the smart fans knew we were hiring a proven recruiter and an unproven coach.

Memphis media and fans got caught up after Pastner landed that first big class and Pastner sort of became a victim of his own success. I posed this hypo to a Tigers messageboard:

Imagine Pastner never lands Barton, Kendrick or Joe Jackson (someone Memphis wasn't recruiting under Cal). He lands the mid-range Memphis guys like Tarik Black and Chris Crawford, and fills in the gaps with no-name 3 stars. And then he goes out and gets us the exact results that he has over these last 3 seasons. Memphis fans would be satisfied, even excited. We're winning C-USA and back to the dance after only missing a year.

So it's not so much the result, but the means in which he got there. If we'd be happy with the results if he coached his way there, why is it different if he recruits his way there? There's tons of great coaches out there that can't recruit at all, but it's arugably half the game at this point.
