Dooley Wants Safeties at 215#+

Dooley was saying in a run defense formation he wants big safety's in there to take down big SEC RB's. In passing situations they want quicker guys to get in there like on 3rd down and long.

When did I say he was the best? He is certainly up there, and tvols used him as an example of the best. I said that even he got trucked by Lattimore. The problem is letting him get into the secondary, not the guy standing in his way when he gets there.

No ****! But you can't think that the defensive lineman will stop every play

No ****! But you can't think that the defensive lineman will stop every play

I don't, but I also don't expect a safety to consistently tackle one of the best running backs in the conference when he has a head of steam because nobody touched him coming through.

For anyone who actually cares what Dooley said, as opposed to what is being dreamed up here:

************************************
With Waggner's size and natural abilities, could he maybe be a better corner than a safety?
"Well, you could make a case for the same thing with Janzen, but then who are you going to play at safety? That's the dilemma we're in. Prentiss has good ball skills. He's got more corner-type size, he does. So that's what we're doing now. Brent's got a little better safety size than any of the other guys. He's at 205. He needs to be about 215. But those good safeties are about 215. If you want to go tackle (Marcus Lattimore) and good backs, you've got to have some stout safeties that can come up and hit. We're thin there.

"Janzen really has position specifics for a corner -- his size, speed and everything else. But he's our best defender back there. When he's in the back end, he makes up for a lot mistakes ahead of him and getting guys down. When he's not in the back end, and he wasn't on the long run, it hurts us."

So you're not one of those four corners guys?
"Not in this league. You better be able to come up there and hit a runner in this league. You look at the good teams we're playing, I think Alabama's safeties were about 220. Come up and strike you. You've got to have a bunch of corner guys, too, when it's time to cover. But you can keep those safeties from being exposed in space by your scheme or having a corner guy sit on the bench until it's third and 10 and they put four wides in the game. Then put the little guys in.

"But when the big boys are in, you better have some big boys to match it. And if you don't, it's that old boxing match deal. It's going to hurt you."

***********************************

So, he thinks you need big safeties to come up an tackle big, strong backs and that you can use little safeties to cover in the right situations. Anyone who calls that ridiculous is just full of __it.

Thanks for posting this. :hi: I hope I didn't screw things up trying to paraphrase what Dooley said.

Leon switched to LB...Menzie is a Saban safety...not surprising Dooley agrees with him on that size being ideal

Waggner's not elite by any means, but he gets killed on this board too much. He made some really nice tackles this week.

Waggner did much better at corner than he has at safety. He plays safety like Betty White.

No. Brewer is plenty fast to play safety, he has been out of football for 5 years! When he gets a bit more in step with the game he will play with instincts instead of thinking about it.

Brent Brewer is a freaking stud. Art Evans has been doing football without stop and he gets abused. Brent Brewer makes $$$ playing baseball, then shows up at UT and his first year is playing well during the season.

I tend to agree about Brewer. He has made some nice plays in the open field. He has made a few bad decisions and gotten caught up in traffic close to the line of scrimmage. He will be fine.

I agree too. I see good speed but bad angles. Once he figures out how to be in the right spot at the right time he can be a good one.

My argument has been consistent, that is that there are plenty of guys who are apparently deemed "undersized" that can tackle just fine.

Consistently irrelevant. You're trying to disprove a point that was never made in the first place. Did you even listen to the presser or did you just read the OP and have at it?

I think you guys are parsing this comment too much. His point seems to be that UT needs to be bigger and more physical in the secondary.

Oddly enough... that's what Saban has gone toward at Bama.

215 might be an exaggeration but I am sure he would rather have his safeties closer to 215 than 175.... which is about where they are this year.

I fully understand what you guys are saying you hate Dooley and anything he says that you dont like you are going to jump on and tear it apart. Lets face it guys this is just what they are going to do. There is nothing wrong with this statement just like there was nothing wrong with the WWII analogy but some people hate CDD and they are going to attack anything he says.

I agree with Dooley. Your safeties should be minimum 200 lbs. if not when recruited then at least after one full year of S&C work. Strong safeties can be 215 if reasonably fast, don't need or probably want that much size at FS.

Eric Berry might have been 200 lbs his junior year.

Either guys can play or they can't.

I would say keep Jackson at safety put Loften in the other safety role then put Martin and another body at CB as we all know Prentiss can't tackle zjcvols grandma!
