Down goes Arkansas

I thought this Arkansas team was, if not the best, one of the best college teams I've ever seen. The sobering question for hog fans is if Van Horn can't win it all with this team, can he ever win it?

He may win one at some point but the best team doesn’t alway win in baseball. It’s a flukey game sometimes and it’s just the nature of the game. You go from winning Game 1 by 19 runs and your season ends because you lose two 1-run ball games. Hard to stomach out scoring a team by 17 runs and losing the series.

In college baseball this is more so the case. Upsets can happen when you are in a format that involves double elimination and best two of three series. Less chance for upsets in post season professional baseball with series being best of 5 and 7.

Arkansas had an incredible team, I think that goes without saying.

However, I will say the post-season exposed DVH's true feelings about his rotation and bullpen. He pretty much rode one horse all the way, and it resulted in him running that horse straight into the ground. He apparently didn't have any faith in the rest of his pitching staff. It really just shows you have truly dominant and lights out Kopps was this year. If not for Kopps, it really makes you think. How good is that team really? They're obviously very good, but Kopps put them on his back all year, and without him they probably finish 3rd in the West as predicted in the pre-season.

If there is one sport where the best team doesn't always win it's baseball....which is why I would temper expectations. We just saw what happened to Arkansas. I do believe we have as good a shot as anybody though.

Yes. I agree. Easy to second guess but state was starting to turn on his stuff and he’s NOT Superman. That pitch hit for the HR in the 9th was out over the plate and a lot of hitters in D1 could have porched that pitch. Again easy to second guess…I guess.

Yea, they should have pulled him before the 9th. I understand knowing your getting great pitching and going with Kopps. Get a lead and sit on it. Problem is at some point there must be a pitching change. Personally, I would have went with someone else and at any sight of trouble called in Kopps.

Another takeaway here is this is not football and other conferences have good teams. NC state just held arky to 2 runs and beat them back to back. We were close but couldn't pull it off.

This is gonna be fun.
Go Vols!

I understand baseball is funky game sometime but I can't totally buy into the best team losing a series. Granted only a 3 game series but if State wins it then they are the better team. I think there is some SEC biased thought going on here. We shall see in Omaha. I hope the SEC team in Orange is still standing at the end.

Go Vols!

Honestly, it's not as horrible of a call than most want to think. Arky lost the game so it looks stupid. State can hit and kopps held them to 3 runs. He was just left in one too many pitches. Probably should have pulled him in the 6th or 7th regardless.

The real story is Arky's lack of offense. From 21 runs to 2?
It’s certainly tough to argue giving your best player the ball. I just don’t understand why they thought it necessary.

That’s what makes them getting trounced even more hilarious. I’m sure they thought they had it in the bag after that first game. I’m sure they got cocky AF after that game, especially given how cocky they were basically all season long. There is a reason why so many in the SEC and across the country are reveling in their loss and it’s not just because they were #1.

Yes, and we remember we lost the series to Arkansas by only 1 run. One run can make the difference! Glad that's behind us and I prefer to recall that one amazing win over them this season. Go Vols!

Arkansas has a fairly empty trophy case for their fans to think they are a proverbial "blue blood"

I believe Tennessee was going to beat Arkansas but I've always been kind of fond of NC State who I feel should be target #1 in the next round of SEC expansion.

I’m not so sure Arkansas losing is a good thing for Tennessee. We wouldn’t have had to play them or Vanderbilt until the best 2 out of 3 championship. I’d rather play Arkansas in that format than Vandy, given Vandy’s 2 aces. And now I don’t know who will beat Vandy on that side. At least, not twice.

If Arkansas had survived, they might’ve at least exchanged losses with Vanderbilt, draining each other’s pitching a little.

Ole Miss losing might’ve been even worse for Tennessee. They had Vandy’s number and would’ve been on Vandy’s side of the bracket. Ideally, Arkansas still loses, but Ole Miss makes it in, knocks Vandy out, then chokes against someone else. Like maybe Tennessee.

Hopefully it will be a great tournament for the Vols but the aces for Vandy will be a challenge for everyone. As the ole saying goes “congrats on making the tournament but while you’re here ….you might as well win it right?” If this BaseVol season hasn’t lit your fire….your wood is wet! Keep it rolling Vols!

To point out the obvious; how does the so-called SEC Coach of the Year not develop more pitching depth in his bullpen than 1 guy?
And what does it say about his starting rotation when he pitches that same guy as a starter in the most important game of season?
They finally got exposed and I'm upset that it was not the Vols who did it.
