Your nuts, I have been to Cameron several times and when UNC, MD for example come to town no place is louder than Cameron....One problem with Cameron is this though, its very small and hot, another is; if its not UNC, MD or NC State there are always alot of empty seats....
To answer the original question (I think).....The crazies do help Duke win ball games because they are so close to floor, and they get inside the other teams head....
Mike, have you been to a game at Allen Fieldhouse? I haven't but would love to. I've also heard Oklahoma State's gym is a very tough place to play.
I also agree 100% with you that unless it's one of the premier ACC games, there are many, many empty seats in that 9,000-seat arena at Cameron. But the cameras won't ever show it. They'll focus on the 3,000 or so Crazies. And I'd do the same thing if I were ESPN.
usat&f made a comment earlier: "ask any unc player if they would truely be afraid to play at duke (even if unc was #1 and duke wasn't even top 25), and i'd be willing to bet they would all say yes. everyone dreads going into duke, because of the fans."
Well, he's not a UNC player, but Ben McCauley at least isn't admitting that he's dreading the Crazies:

"It's fun," he said. "That's the kind of atmosphere you want to play in."
Listen, if we just put our Duke biases (on both sides) aside for a minute, I think we'd agree that the Crazies, love 'em or hate 'em, are a fixture in college basketball today. They have influenced other student sections more than any other school. They come up with a lot of chants, some of them clever, some not. They make noise the entire game and dress crazy and hop up and down and make the place loud. Very loud.
But long, long before the Crazies were ever an itch in Duke's pants, Cameron Indoor was still a very tough place to play, for no matter who fills the arena, if you make noise, it's amplified big-time in there, and it's really hot, and it's really compact, and that makes for an uncomfortable game.
Bottom line: Cameron Indoor Stadium and the Duke team and the Duke coach do get into the opponents' heads. Any rattling the Crazies do pales in comparison.
And if you ever have the chance to see a game there, by all means, do. It's a great experience.
