Duke/UNC Official Thread 2021/2022 (K’s Last Hurrah Edition)

I think Hubert has done fine for his first season. The team has improved as he’s found the guys he’s comfortable playing. They obviously like playing for him, and they’re playing a style that should be attractive to recruits looking to make it to the league. Win or lose Saturday, win or lose on Monday, it’s been a successful first year and I don’t personally feel like it raises the expectations going forward, it’s Carolina. The expectations are already high.

I think it might be worse for Davis because in year 1 he got UNC to a final 4, beat K in Cameron in his final game and would have literally sent him to retirement. That’s pretty impressive. Hubert has done a great job the last 6-7 weeks, but there were some really bad losses this season. Despite this run, I think the verdict is still out on HD going forward because he still has to recruit and maintain the success. Being an 8 seed won’t be acceptable going forward because it’s almost impossible to go on this type of run.

OTOH, Scheyer and his staff already have an amazing class coming in next year and basically a brand new starting 5. Following a Legend is very difficult, but I think Scheyer will be given some latitude to do things his way, despite what certain articles have said.

It can easily be argued that Hubert has been more successful/effective with this team than Roy was his last 2-3 seasons. The only real addition that has been a factor that Roy didn’t have is Manek, so you could say Hubert has gotten more out of Roy’s guys than Roy did.

Scheyer will have expectations but I don’t think it’ll be titles or bust for him, at least early on… even if Duke wins the title on Monday night. Folks know that K is 1 of 1. Wooden is the only thing close to him and it’s not an apples to apples comparison for various reasons. Scheyer will get time in my opinion. K knows what it’s like to not do well early on at Duke… I think he’ll push the powers that be to give Scheyer ample time.

I don’t know what to think about Davis and UNC. They looked so mediocre until about 3-4 weeks ago. I don't think Davis is the long-term answer at UNC but I also didn’t think they’d have this sort of turnaround… so what do I know?

Honestly and it’s just my opinion but I think some kids are giving more effort to try and increase draft stock. It’s a weird time of the year for me because suddenly Carolina is playing lights out but dropped games to some really bad teams and some bad teams. I’m glad they’ve found their groove but I hope they don’t fall into some unwarranted confidence or it could be real ugly Saturday.

While I agree also being a Tar Heel if he wins it All in his first season you’ll have some fans that give him the Saban treatment one slip and they’ll want him fired two weeks ago.

That’s a good point. Bacot, Love, Manek, and Davis have all come on strong. I’ve seen Marek in some second round projections. Not sure on others but they’re certainly helping themselves. You could sorta make a similar point for Banchero even though he’s consistently been in the top 5 picks. He has elevated his game a lot in this tournament… less settling for shots and playing with higher energy. He seemed to “coast” way too much earlier this year.

I’m cautiously optimistic on a rematch with UNC because I think Duke has been playing at a different level… But they’ve laid two big stinkers in other big moments (K’s last game in Cameron and the ACC tournament championship). I’m hoping that’s behind them.

Hubert’s offense is different from Roy’s but similar in other ways in terms of getting ppl open, a lot of screening rather than setting up low post inside out play from before. It’s actually kind of fun to watch Hubert’s offense the real key is their defense got way better

I think Hubert bringing in Manek has finally given UNC a stretch 4, which has updated and modernized UNC’s offense. Roy was a master at getting his guys to play at tempo, also getting his post guys touches, but was kind of stuck in the 2 big mindset. It seems like Hubert has gotten Carolina using more spacing and embracing the 3 ball more, which I’m sure chaps one of the old UNC posters that still revered the 4 corners and hated the 3 point shot.

Sounds like a version of Ks offense. 🤮

No offense, but that's just a really bizarre take. You begrudge players trying to improve their draft stock, which would entail them playing well? The main reasons that they didn't play well early in the season were that they were a young team that wasn't committed on the defensive side of the ball, and they hadn't really figured out yet who their primary scorers were.

I realize that and I don’t take offense to it.

Very interesting statistic that this is the first time that Duke has faced North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament in the series history.

The only way it sorta made sense to me is that it’s probably only happened a handful of times where they’ve even been in the same region. Tournament officials have probably intentionally kept them out of the same region as they’ve already played each other 2-3 times in any given season. So they could’ve only faced each other in the Final Four or National Championship.

Having said that, it still is wild to me that it’s never happened.

My boss who doesn’t talk sports and knows jack$hit about sports, especially basketball, just came in wearing a brand new Carolina fleece jacket talking smack to me about the game. This is what I’m dealing with this week. GTFO.

Oh that’s rough and annoying.

I’m so torn on how I think this game will go against UNC. We killed them in Chapel Hill. They methodically just beat us down in the second half in Cameron. I think we got tight as that game went on… maybe having blown it in big moments will drive this team to do whatever it takes to not allow a let down to happen again.

Even with how UNC is playing, I think Duke is just better. Thought the same after about 5 minutes of the Arkansas game. But that doesn’t matter a lot of times in rivalry games like this… plus being the Final Four. Rarely is it a fluke when a team makes it this far. And all 4 of these teams have played well to get there. I remember back to the 1999 season… Duke beats UConn 9/10 times that year… but all it takes is that one game. Btw, that team is hardly ever mentioned as an all-time great team but it absolutely was. They lost to Cincy in the Alaskan Shootout and then UConn in the finals. Unreal. Went 16-0 in ACC play. Killed everyone in that ACC tournament. They arguably could’ve won 4 out of 5 championships between 1998-2002 and only got one. Still chaps me as you can tell!

The only way it could be worse is if he left the tags on it.

If your going that rough at least dirty it up first. Every sports fan I know has a go to shirt, hat etc that has some sort of stain that won’t come out. Still clean but the memory is there.

Jumping on the wagon only to switch teams Sunday morning isn’t a good look

I have an Orange and White shirt I’ve worn almost every game for going on 16 years (maybe that’s the problem). I could tell you when and why this stain from a brat is there, why Jack Daniels discolored part of the pocket, I could go on.

He bought that damn thing at Costco yesterday and then asked if I’m watching the game. He then proceeds to go in on why he hates Duke. Good talk.

Watch and see what he comes to work in on Monday. He’ll either say I told you do or it’ll be the wrong color blue.

A little Duke slam but it works both ways!

Im with you on that Arkansas game, even though some on this board disagree with me. You could easily tell Duke was better before the second TV timeout .

My heart can’t take discussing 99 this week, or most weeks for that matter. Anything can happen, but I think Duke is locked in right now. Carolina is playing great too, but to steal the words of a
Nike Commercial:

MY BETTER IS BETTER THAN YOUR BETTER.

Duke beat the Arky defense but letting the guards go one on one and Arky had nothing to stop it. They were certainly just the better team. There was nothing about the officiating of that game that did anything to the outcome. Duke is firing on all cylinders, but it just takes one off game

If they play defense I have a lot of confidence. When Duke is committed to defense good things happen and they become very, very tough to beat.
