Duke/UNC Official Thread 2021/2022 (K’s Last Hurrah Edition)

I don’t see UNC getting rid of Hubert until at least year 3, unless there is something that just becomes unacceptable, like losing the locker room. People have been questioning this teams effort at times during this season and the big losses to teams like Wake and Miami can’t continue . I think there are too many factors at play that would keep him safe unless they absolutely had to fire him.

As far as the other night goes, it was only a small section of the student section, but to me it’s not a good look. The Rivalry is better than that. Leave that stuff for the trash ass Maryland fans and their F##k Duke T-shirts they made. I’ve been in the crowd for a UT/ Bama game and the students started that chant and i thought the same thing then as I did the other night. I know you don’t like K, a lot of people don’t. I have mixed feelings about he handled his retirement, but the thing that I respect the most is allowing the players to know who the coach is gonna be and letting Scheyer recruit. I sure as hell hope he doesn’t show up at every single game like Roy has. WTH is that all about? No pressure Hubert.

Upon reflection, I agree with you, and I'm a bit more negative about the chant than I was before. I find the 'Lets Go Brandon' chants to be infantile, and for consistency I will shelve my Dook disgust and take a contra-chant position in this case as well. I think it would have been much more awesome for his introduction to have been met with absolute silence in the arena.

I do believe that it stems from the 'Coach K Love Fest 2021-2022 Tour' that the little rat-faced coach decided to initiate. While I see your point about recruiting, I don't buy for a moment that this was the motivation. Sheyer will have the pre and post NIL money machine at his disposal, and the endless Dook hype in the media, so unless he basically locks his door and never leaves his office, recruiting will not be a problem, especially with the first few classes. It's a whole new ballgame post-NIL, and I think that weighed heavily in both Roy Williams' and K's decisions to retire, but neither school should be having any issues given the respective alumni and booster bases.

This is about ego and marketing. And it is tiring.

That’s fine. I understand your dislike. Question ..

Who do you dislike more Duke or Georgia ?

LOL. Well played, my friend. Basketball? Dook. Football? uga.

Now....let's say Dook basketball played uga football in a Superfans-type hypothetical matchup. While undoubtedly Ditka would still win, I would likely hold my nose and pull for Dook.

That hurts. Damn you.

I used to care that deeply about sports and now it just doesent bother me anymore.

Will I ever like K no but knowing some folks wish him harm or whatever comes to mind blows my mind.

Sports aren’t that serious.

I don't think anyone in here wishes anyone any harm over sports. Heck, when Chubb suffered that horrific knee injury against us, my heart hurt for the guy, and I despise uga. I don't like to see any of the kids get hurt, even those who play for programs I despise. Heck, if I saw K in an airport, I'd buy him a drink and ask him what its like to be the coach of perhaps the most loved and hated program in basketball....simultaneously.

If anyone wishes actual injury on someone over sports, they have other issues.

I used to care a lot about sports, but I’ve mellowed. I don’t know if it’s age, or years of getting beat down as a fan, or a combination of both, but it just doesn’t mean as much anymore. It used to be that my sports teams were a must see event. Now? It just depends on what else I’ve got going on.

I’m in the same boat. I used to get absolutely bat **** crazy over football, basketball, and baseball now it’s just not there for whatever reason. Age I guess.

Make no mistake about it there are folks out there that do that very thing. It’s sad really.

Hopefully no one was cheering this bull$hit play last night. Kid should be suspended multiple games.

I applaud the kid for walking over to apologize afterward. Also, very smart of K to talk to him and not let him actually approach the bench. Smart move by Brownell to be there with him.

That said… it was an awful foul. Dude literally lowered his shoulder into an airborne Moore. Absolutely no reason for it. I cringed and tensed up watching in real time. Glad Moore bounced back

Good for him for apologizing, but that was a dirty play. I don’t care what his explanation on Twitter was, I saw what I saw. That would’ve gotten him a hefty fine in the NBA. Good on the Duke players for not retaliating , but part of me is kind of pissed they let him get away with that.

Well Duke was held back but still assessed a technical. Kid walked over to the Duke bench looking fully remorseful and then apologized again on social media. You’re only wanting to look at one thing apparently, so do you man.

What do you mean I’m only wanting to look at one thing?

Flagrant foul. Glad he wasnt seriously hurt. And the kid apologizing shows it was a heat of the moment thing, and hopefully he grew up a bit.

I think well handled all around. No one seriously hurt. Kid is suspended a game and did the right thing to apologize.

Better handled than that Florida thug who elbowed Fulky last year. IIRC, all we got from Florida or the SEC office were crickets.

I’m glad he wasn’t seriously hurt too. I’m usually not against playing hard basketball. I romanticize the days of the Pistons vs Bulls, Lakers, Celtics or the Knick teams of the 90’s. I feel like the play last night would’ve been a bench clearer in those days. There was zero play on the ball. And while I do commend him for apologizing and that cooler heads prevailed in the moment, he still committed that act. It sets a precedent, and it makes me wonder what the punishment would’ve been had Moore been hurt, which he is lucky to not have been. Based on the flagrant foul that was committed I think he should’ve received more than a game.

Also, let’s not pretend that if the same play was made by a guy in a Duke Jersey that it wouldn’t have been the lead story on World News Tonight with David Muir.

Dont disagree with the first paragraph. A couple of games would be fine by me. Again, the Florida thug got nothing, and I agree it sets a bad precedent. I do think the player's actions afterwards are legitimately a factor in the punishment.

As for the 2nd para, I don't disagree that if a dookie did it it would be a big story, but I dont think it would be much bigger, and you would have sone folks (Dook Vitale, for example) probably try and defend it. Only half joking.

Wasn’t Grayson Allen at Duke? How many times and games was he suspended again?
Not saying Grayson Allen’s antics were good at all. He was worthy of a suspension, but he never came close to doing what David Collins did. At least in college.

Certainly not a good play, it was worthy of a flagrant, but not an ejection. If you compare the two plays, one is a lot more egregious than the other .

You contended if it were a Duke player the reaction would be different (I assume you mean more punitive). Allen made no play on the ball and moved under the shooter in the air.

Also, Allen literally committed multiple flagrant and intentional, non-basketball related fouls over several years that could cause player harm. To boot, he was often unapologetic. Yet he was only ever suspended 1 game, as I recall, and not by the ACC.

Clemson player punishment was as fair as that. And by no means am I excusing the play.

I’m definitely aware of Grayson Allen’s past and You can breakdown the play Allen made all you want. I admit Allen made a lot of stupid plays that could’ve cause players harm. However, he never made as violent of a play as the Clemson player did the other night . I don’t know how that’s even debatable. I
was also contending that the media reaction would much more severe if it had been a Duke player that committed the same foul.

Honestly, I’m really not trying to get into argument about this or Grayson Allen any further.
