Early look at next year's SEC (Subject to change)

Kentucky players are still in diapers and most have already give them the trophy, why play just mail the trophy to coach c house and move on to next year.

IMO losing Wiljer is a HUGE blow to KY. Their best year's always had an upper classman that helped lead the team. Patterson, Miller, Lamb, etc...

I don't consider them a favorite in the SEC after the loss. I have them behind FL and UT if Maymon is 100%

I agree. They'll be better than last year, but Wiltjer was the only upperclassmen on the roster.

I don't see Wiltjer developing into a leader. And I don't think losing Wiltjer hurts us that much. He would have been a great bench player and it hurts to lose shooting. Teams are going to be more willing to let UK shoot without him. We just have to learn to be efficient

Btw, Lamb wasn't an upperclassmen. Although at UK, that seems pretty old lol.

Wonder where he'll transfer to.

Somewhere around Portland.

Which sucks because if we win; everyone expected it. If we lose; then it's Cals fault.

Freshmen are unpredictable.

You saw what happens last year when you have no upperclassmen/experience. The most experienced players now on the roster are the Jekyll/Hyde sophomores Poythress/Stein.

Are either of them ready to step up and be a leader? The storyline in Lexington just became more interesting than it already was with this wiltjer news.

Yeah, I've heard that from every single KY fan I know. Everyone else seems to have a different opinion. I won't be a bit surprised to see KY fall out of the top spot in the preseason polls.

I can see Poythress stepping up. Not sure about Stein. You're right about the leadership problems. You called it last year, I don't forget that. :)

Wiltjer will be missed. I shouldn't downplay it, cause it does hurt lol.

They shouldn't be number one with Kyle anyway.

It hasn't been confirmed yet, but yeah, that's what it's looking like.

Terrible offseason for us between this and the Wilbekin suspension.

Which is why I said reportedly and not confirmed.

I assume wilbekin will be back at some point, but regardless, losing a guy like walker definitely hurts.

Did Patric Young declare for the draft / did he get drafted? Who's behind Yeguete in the post if Walker doesn't make it in?

No.

We still have Young, Yeguete, Damontre Harris, Dorian Finney-Smith (a 3/4 combo), and Casey Prather, so we should be fine. But this may mean playing more three-guard lineups than we would have otherwise.

If we are talking league play I'd lean towards Kentucky, but we may be better early part if the year.

With no veteran leadership, it may be hard to win on the road in the SEC with nothing but Freshman. I don't care how talented they are. Polythress and Stein are part of the "losing" KY. Not the part that "has done it before". If CCM can learn to coach this team on the road, then my money is on TN.

Funny thing is we haven't been to the NCAA tourny in what seems like forever, but have more NCAA tourny experience coming back than KY.

He's going to put it all together at some point and make me wish he'd made a bad decision by leaving college early. He looked good last year until he had to play physical.

I'm not too worried about him, like you said when he has to play physical he folds...lucky for us our bigs like to play physical.

Wow, that's crazy lol. Solid post, I do have many more doubts about them without wiltjer than with.

Just heard Cuonzo on 1180 say that if they played a game today, Jeronne would definitely play. FWIW.

Kentucky, unfortunately, will be fine. More often than not, having the most talent results in success, last year being the exception rather than the rule. Cal's "system" has worked more than it has failed. The lack of senior/junior leadership may haunt them come tournament time, but they should have enough horses to win the SEC, with Florida and Tennessee being the only threats standing in the way, and both have major question marks to be answered as well

IMO, Tennessee needs to lose fewer than four conference games to win the SEC outright.
