Evidently TDOT doesn't think anything will come of this advisory...haven't seen any pretreating of the roads...there was a good little patch of blue earlier but it was broken up by the plateau

I'm thinking the same thing. I have to work at 4:30 in the morning, hopefully nothing happens.

They never pretreat with brine when it is calling for rain and then snow. It would get washed off and be a waste of time, money, and product.

I agree that it's breaking up. Going to be random snow showers coming through. Just hope it's enough to close work!

Snow isn't ending tonight, folks. The plateau isn't eating up the storms, its just that it's been dry for the most part today in the valley, so it's taking some time for the air to moisten up.

I'm seeing some flakes flying in North Knoxville.

I'm sure they do it on advice from local meteorologist, at least I would think anyway. A news clip from earlier this evening said they were expecting rain before the system so they didn't pretreat. Makes no sense since they pretreated the other storms and they rained beforehand.

The good thing about the snow finally falling in the valley is this will start to lower temperatures in the valley. Most areas will see 20s as a low.

Jefferson County schools closed tomorrow...Grainger County gonna be pissed that someone beat them to be the first to close :)

But Memphis will be the place to receive a dusting.

This is the last thing I will say on next week's system, because I want to wait until Thursday to start discussing it more. Tennessee won't be the only state in the South that needs to bookmark this system. Alabama, Georgia, and the Carolinas could also be seeing a significant snowstorm (and potentially an ice storm in some places).

I'm not discrediting you at all. I was only highlighting the bad luck that Memphis has with winter storms. I should note that the Memphis NWS has mentioned this system in its forecast discussion for next Sunday night.

Wow, Knox County schools are closed today. I'll say this, their closing policy is a lot less strict then when I was in school. When I was a kid, Knox County was always one of the last schools to close. Hell, there were times when every county except Knox County was closed for the day. There literally had to either be a Winter Storm Warning, snow/ice covered roads on most back roads and some main roads, or a flu outbreak for Knox County to close.

Nowadays, if a meteorologist says the word snow, Knox County closes.

Well, it's because the Superintendent has ALOT of heat on him and people are able to voice their opinions publicly when he makes bad decisions. A few years back Knox was still the last to close and a bus or 2 were involved in minor accidents because Knox released later in the day than they should have knowing a winters system was on its way. Parents were furious that Macintyre put their kids lives at risk having a late dismissal.

Crazy.

I graduated in 2001 and I remember plenty of days waiting until 7 oclock or so to hear they'd called it off.

As pointed out by another, the supt has a lot of pressure on him with the bus wrecks lately. Last year a child died in a bus accident and just last week there was another wreck. You know that has to play into his decision big time.

I don't think it's going to be cold enough for the next storm to snow much, but then again all I'm doing is looking at TWC and going off what they say. :)

I now think there's more to it than safety. The state of TN has a new standardized test (Common Core) that all the teachers and students have spent tremendous time preparing for this year and today was supposed to be a start of testing on a website that doesn't work, so teachers and students have wasted countless hours because someone that wasn't qualified to design a website got a payday at taxpayers expense (thanks Haslam). The word is teachers statewide are furious, and I'm sure this snow day was taken in hopes of hoping they'll cool down a bit. This will end up being a huge story probably on the national level regarding this failure.

Looks like the plateau killed most of the precip..we did catch a good snow shower that came from the north and got almost 2 inches in JC..really bad wreck in front of the Tony's in Straw Plains on 11-E looked like 5 cars and they were all over the place..probably have to close both sides for a little while...thankfully it didn't look like anyone was seriously hurt...but probably 3 nice cars were totaled.
