East Tennessee Weather

Update:

All of Middle Tennessee has been upgraded to an Enhanced Risk. Areas along and west of Knox County have been upgraded to a Slight Risk. The rest of East Tennessee (Morristown, Tri-Cities, Newport, ect) now has a Marginal Risk.

Areas in the Enhanced Risk (West and Middle Tennessee) could potentially see very large hail (golfball and possibly bigger) and some tornadoes (a couple strong tornadoes can't be ruled out). Areas in the Slight Risk (Knoxville, Crossville, Chattanooga, ect) could see large hail around quarter size and an isolated tornado or 2.

Something important to note. The Severe threat is still conditional. What that means is there's still uncertainty with this system. The first round of rain tomorrow will likely cause the airmass to become stable. The question is how quick the first round moves through and can the airmass become unstable again before the next round? We'll have to keep our eyes on this.

Small Update:

I didn't notice it before, so I apologize, but the Chattanooga area is included in the Enhanced Risk area.

Here's a graphic from the NWS in Morristown:

The first round of rain stabilized the airmass, but with the sun out now, the airmass will become unstable again. I still think the primary risks will be Damaging winds in excess of 60 mph and quarter size hail. An isolated tornado can't be ruled out, especially for areas south of interstate 40.

TWC hourly currently has Farragut/West Knoxville at 50% chance of T-Storms at 1am and 85% at 3am.

Update:

The areas along and North of interstate 40 that were in the Slight risk have been downgraded to a Marginal risk. The airmass didn't have enough time to recover, so the instability is limited. However, the strong wind shear will keep the threat for a few strong to isolated severe thunderstorms for areas in the marginal risk. The areas in the Southern Valley (Southwest of Knoxville) are still in the Slight risk area.

Alert!

Tornado Watch has been issued for Southern portions of East Tennessee (Chattanooga, Cleveland, ect.) until 5:00 AM EST.
