Edward Snowden: American Hero

The fact that people want Snowden's head and they don't give a single **** about this guy is really disheartening:

I'm not torn. He could have exposed the NSA, if that was his true intent, without giving away the farm to cesspools like Russia. The NSA domestic spying needed to be exposed as the burgeoning Big Brother affair that it's becoming and I, too, am appreciative. Had he stopped there, I'd jump on the hero bandwagon. I don't even a little bit buy that his course of action was the only one available.

Exactly. There are whistleblower protections in place and other avenues he could have pursued. While I'm glad the end state was exposing the programs, I vehemently disagree with the methods. It stinks of attention whoring and delusions of grandeur.

Is Bradley Manning also an "American Hero"?

Yes he is. The fact that some US troops may have lost their lives as a result is irrelevant. Senior officials and military commanders in the last two administrations had the chance to act differently and got called on their actions.

Bradley Manning has more honor and integrity than many others in uniform unfortunately.

Irrelevant? Dead troops irrelevant? Nice argument.

Actually, that's pretty much what he's referencing. Spying on their own people is one of the many things that made the USSR the evil empire.

It wouldn't have mattered who they were spying on - our own or others. Keeping in mind that Snowden revealed international spying as well, there is a broader point there. And a completely obvious one that isn't worth being said.

That comment would have worked had you not actually said something else about his tweet.

Weird. I guess I have no idea what any of your points are. To me when you say "duh" to a statement about Snowden being a hero, it means that you are in agreement and that you think it's an obvious statement. I don't think you are saying Snowden is a hero. Is that what you are saying?

I am saying that the entire concept is obvious. It just struck me as a waste of electrons to state what has always been fact. If you can turn over intelligence on your country - whether that be in the press or through clandestine exchange - and then defect / seek asylum in a foreign country that is often regarded as an enemy to your country, then that country will typically view you to be a hero. Aldrich Ames is a traitor and Polyakov a hero. Except in Russia where it is reverse.

It seemed like a deep thoughts by Jack Handy tweet.

My thought on reading it ..... "Well, duh."

Do you think he would get a fair shake in a country that he exposed for violating the rights of its people in that country? Is your answer "duh"?

While I understand where you and Bur come from on this, I think you are so blinded by your undying devotion to personal freedom that you cannot see that this man, no matter if his intentions were good, and no matter if he exposed domestic spying, without a doubt committed an act of treason.

Doesn't 2 wrongs make a right? Why should he pay & the government get a free pass?

Put me on that list too

I 100% dispute this. Treason is the only crime defined by the constitution. If we want to talk about treason..."giving aid and comfort" to our enemies then the first finger needs to be pointed at Obama for arming known terrorists.

You are blinded by your undying devotion to big government.
