ESPN thinks we go 4-8 next year

We've never EVER lost 8 games in 1 season, what makes them think we will this year? (I bet ESPN doesn't know that Vol stat!)

I love butch but the answer isn't never. General protocol is that improvement has to show in the record by year 3.

Recent history tells us that virtually every SEC coach who won a conf title the last 15-20 iirc, has won at least 9 games in year 2......he ain't winning 9 games this year IMO so year 3 should very, very interesting around here.

In the Championship Game era, every single coach who wound up winning an SEC title won at least 9 regular season games in his second year with only one exception.

Probably because we're fully replacing both lines, will probably start true freshmen at 1 CB and 1 safety position, have questions about our LB corps, haven't named a starting QB yet, will have 2 true freshmen in the 2 deep at TE, will start a true freshman at 1 WR and a 1st yr JUCO at another, and will likely have a true freshman handling place kicking duties alongside a unproven punter.

If you look at that from the outside without understanding the full context of how talented these kids are vs who they're replacing from last years team, I can see how they might've come up with their conclusion.

Exactly. This doesn't bode well for Butch. UT ain't sniffing 9 wins this year.

Good luck vs SEC caliber Left Tackle.

Seeing as hes made a career in the NFL out of it just like many have, yes even out of the SEC, im gonna say its not a big deal. What do u think Maggit played in 2012? Thats pretty much what an OLB is in a 3-4.270 lb guys aren't exactly track stars either.

At the same time not looking at what the other teams lost. Do they really expect Vandy to produce like they have been after a coaching turnover, new schemes and loss of their best players? Ive also seen predictions of UF ending up in the top 25, but they had a big coaching turnover and play a brutal schedule.

I'll go on the record and say that anyone predicting a Vandy win over UT this year is an absolute dumbazz.

All I want is that when UT plays someone, we're circled on their calendar again. Just get back to being relevant and competitive.

how many of those took over for the worst coach in their programs history? Butch's situation is totally different than those other coach's situations...

If Jones is on the hot seat after 5-7 in his second year of a major rebuilding project in the toughest conference in football, facing one of the most difficult schedules in the league, and replacing virtually everyone on both sides of the line, then our fan base's football IQ has hit rock bottom.

You're right about the fan base because in their eyes, he will be sitting firmly on the hotseat if he post a second straight 5-7 season. I don't think that'll be the case with Hart and the administration. They will be considerably more patient IMO.

What was ESPN predicting for Auburn last year 6 months before they ran the ball straight down Bama's(writers) throat? Or Ok before the bowl? I can't recall what they where saying...but I feel confident ESPN wasn't predicting these teams to be anywhere near as good as they ended up.
4-8 is BS considering so many things. It really is somewhat of a toss up.

(edit) NOT saying we will be like AU....

then most of our fans have an IQ slightly above jort wearers and the inbreds in red...

Who is this ESPN person? Did he name himself after a sporting news network that employs hundreds of personalities who are paid to give their opinion? Or did every person at ESPN predict this?

Ding ding ding ding...... That being said, I'm a big Butch supporter, but if he goes 5-7 again in the manner that he did last year, which included embarrassing not remotely competitive losses to Oregon, Bama, Auburn, Mizzou and Vandy (was only very embarrassing), he'll lose if not my support, virtually all my confidence that he's the right guy.

Unfortunately I could only give your thought one like! This is exactly what I was thinking as I was reading these other responses. Unbelievable that people could be talking about hot seat for Butch Jones.

I guarantee it will be talked about at the end of this season and not just by fans

The worst thing is if we have another losing season, Jones will have a tough sell to the '16 recruits. Results speak louder than words.

I find it hard to fathom that we could lose 8 games in one year. I am cautiously optimistic, hoping we make a bowl game at the very least.

Can't compare us to last year's Auburn team, even though they were terrible in 2012, they had recruited very well in years prior and had more talent and depth than we do I think.

This team is big a question mark for me, but the last few years have worn on me and I don't want to set myself up for more disappointment. Still remember the Sugar Vols though, anything can happen but this team needs get off to a good start, stay healthy, and who knows.

We need the football gods on our side for once.

08/31/14 vs. Utah State Knoxville, Tenn. WIN
09/06/14 vs. Arkansas State Knoxville, Tenn. WIN
09/13/14 at Oklahoma Norman, Okla. LOSS
09/27/14 at Georgia * Athens, Ga. LOSS
10/04/14 vs. Florida * Knoxville, Tenn. WIN
10/11/14 vs. Chattanooga Knoxville, Tenn. WIN
10/18/14 at Ole Miss * Oxford, Miss. WIN
10/25/14 vs. Alabama * Knoxville, Tenn. LOSS
11/01/14 at South Carolina * Columbia, S.C. LOSS
11/15/14 vs. Kentucky * Knoxville, Tenn. WIN
11/22/14 vs. Missouri * Knoxville, Tenn. WIN
11/29/14 at Vanderbilt WIN

My two cents worth, at any rate there is no way I see UT going 4-8 this or any year in the future. We have moderate depth and besides Butch gets it.

I'm thinking this (sadly):

08/31/14 vs. Utah State Knoxville, Tenn. WIN
09/06/14 vs. Arkansas State Knoxville, Tenn. WIN
09/13/14 at Oklahoma Norman, Okla. LOSS
09/27/14 at Georgia * Athens, Ga. LOSS
10/04/14 vs. Florida * Knoxville, Tenn. LOSS
10/11/14 vs. Chattanooga Knoxville, Tenn. WIN
10/18/14 at Ole Miss * Oxford, Miss. TOSS-UP
10/25/14 vs. Alabama * Knoxville, Tenn. LOSS
11/01/14 at South Carolina * Columbia, S.C. LOSS
11/15/14 vs. Kentucky * Knoxville, Tenn. WIN
11/22/14 vs. Missouri * Knoxville, Tenn. TOSS-UP
11/29/14 at Vanderbilt WIN

That would put us at 5-5 with the Ole Miss and Missouri games deciding how well our season turns out.

At 4-8, Butch better hope for a lot of legacy recruits next year if he plans to keep recruiting at a very high level. If UT were to somehow run off Butch though, we are the new KY for the next decade. Sorry but UT will not break out the piggy bank to compete with the likes of 'bama.

Butch needs to win, but barring wins he needs to at least show A LOT of fight and solid game planning this year. I love what he says, all the right things for UT no doubt, but I want to see some inspired coaching with what talent we do have this year.

Find a way to win so we can stop "hoping" for 6-6 seasons.

Exactly. We need to go a bowl. CBJ needs to get it done.
