I love butch but the answer isn't never. General protocol is that improvement has to show in the record by year 3.
Recent history tells us that virtually every SEC coach who won a conf title the last 15-20 iirc, has won at least 9 games in year 2......he ain't winning 9 games this year IMO so year 3 should very, very interesting around here.
We've never EVER lost 8 games in 1 season, what makes them think we will this year? (I bet ESPN doesn't know that Vol stat!)
Probably because we're fully replacing both lines, will probably start true freshmen at 1 CB and 1 safety position, have questions about our LB corps, haven't named a starting QB yet, will have 2 true freshmen in the 2 deep at TE, will start a true freshman at 1 WR and a 1st yr JUCO at another, and will likely have a true freshman handling place kicking duties alongside a unproven punter.
If you look at that from the outside without understanding the full context of how talented these kids are vs who they're replacing from last years team, I can see how they might've come up with their conclusion.
At the same time not looking at what the other teams lost. Do they really expect Vandy to produce like they have been after a coaching turnover, new schemes and loss of their best players? Ive also seen predictions of UF ending up in the top 25, but they had a big coaching turnover and play a brutal schedule.

If Jones is on the hot seat after 5-7 in his second year of a major rebuilding project in the toughest conference in football, facing one of the most difficult schedules in the league, and replacing virtually everyone on both sides of the line, then our fan base's football IQ has hit rock bottom.
You're right about the fan base because in their eyes, he will be sitting firmly on the hotseat if he post a second straight 5-7 season. I don't think that'll be the case with Hart and the administration. They will be considerably more patient IMO.
then most of our fans have an IQ slightly above jort wearers and the inbreds in red...

Unfortunately I could only give your thought one like! This is exactly what I was thinking as I was reading these other responses. Unbelievable that people could be talking about hot seat for Butch Jones.

My two cents worth, at any rate there is no way I see UT going 4-8 this or any year in the future. We have moderate depth and besides Butch gets it.
Exactly. We need to go a bowl. CBJ needs to get it done.At 4-8, Butch better hope for a lot of legacy recruits next year if he plans to keep recruiting at a very high level. If UT were to somehow run off Butch though, we are the new KY for the next decade. Sorry but UT will not break out the piggy bank to compete with the likes of 'bama.
Butch needs to win, but barring wins he needs to at least show A LOT of fight and solid game planning this year. I love what he says, all the right things for UT no doubt, but I want to see some inspired coaching with what talent we do have this year.
Find a way to win so we can stop "hoping" for 6-6 seasons.
