Well, it's a little better, not nearly as declarative as mine was, but I understand you need a little leeway in order to find a way to bash Pearl should he be more successful than you predict.

By the way, I love how you couch the idea of UT winning in such negative terms, classic. If Kentucky doesn't develop fast enough, Tennessee could, basically, back into the SEC title. Unreal. I've never seen someone so blantantly biased who passes themselves off as some kind of expert.

As far as the Regionals, like I said, it's all about matchups. A good match up could easily mean an Elite 8.

Expectations

1. 25 wins-with 23 last year and everyone returning, well, except probably Cheech Tabb, this shouldn't be too much of an issue. If they get defensive issues straightened out, they can push 30 again with their talent. The SEC should be a little better, though. I still think Vandy could be trouble. UK has the next Fab 5, but still has Cal on the bench. Not worried about Florida, especially sans Calathes.

2. At least Saturday in the SEC Tournament-Honestly, I could really care less about the conference tournament other than padding some wins and getting a higher seed. It would be nice to win, for once, but we're not Weber State. It's not that critical. Oh, and I don't want to play on Thursday night. That goes with #1.

3. Sweet 16 at least-Once you get to the Regional Semis, it's all about matchups, so Final Four or bust isn't always fair. However, getting past the first weekend should be a minimum expectation for this crew.

4. Lead SEC in steals and scoring-Pearl's teams are most effective when getting easy buckets off of TOs. I still wish we could throw in a zone press, but a leopard doesn't change it's spots. And, maybe Negedu can teach everyone how to hedge because that was pitiful last year.

5. Two on the 1st team All-SEC-Between Scotty, Tyler and Wayne, at least two of them need to become consistantly get 15 and 8 a game.

Needs

1. Goins needs to know and play his role-I don't give a damn if he's the target of the anti-Pearl crew, he's valuable IF he can play solid defense at the PG and handle the ball. He can average 1.7 ppg for all I care as long as he can control penetration.

2. Hopson defers to no one-Scotty has more talent than anyone on the team and probably the top 2-4 in the SEC, but he was a follower last year. Understandable as a freshman, but he's too good to play second fiddle. If he wants to be a lottery pick, he needs to grow some huevos.

3. Urgency-JP, Tyler and Wayne have pretty much maxed out their talent on this level, so they just need to play like they are seniors who realize there is not tomorrow. Tyler I'm not too worried about, Wayne just needs to do it all the time and JP? Well....

4 Kenny Hall and/or Negedu replace Brian Williams-Williams can be a decent in a role, but I think he's about as good as he's going to get. We'll be fine with him, but Negedu and Hall are more explosive and much better as the 4 in the press, which we will need later in the season.

So, some basic stuff. Bottom line, I see 25-28 wins and a second weekend appearance. Any other takers?

A few of us care about the basketball team on here and are not so eaten up with jealousy of Bruce Pearl that we sound like idiots.

I think one of the keys I am most interested in that you discussed is 4. Negedu should become VERY good in this system if he is being coached well. He has all the physical tools in the world. If there is a real emphasis on defense and he buys in, he should be able to make people tired as he relentlessly plays defense.

I fear Chism will always blame asthma and will never become a dominate force.

My greatest hope is that Tyler Smith, JP Prince and Wayne Chism all seek to get NBA money and all play better than we have ever seen them play in a TN uniform. If they have a better year than last individually it will mean in part that Chism has more blocks and dunks and jump hooks and less 3 pointers and it will mean that Hopson does not have to try to shoot 40 a game.

We should have team goals that we never allow another Meeks type performance any time this season. That was an embarrassment to the program and it should have been to those men. Vandy has a guy who may be able to light us up like that, UK does as well.

I want no individual player to score more than 28 against UT all season and I do not think that is an impossible goal.

We benefit from a very weak conference today and lose when it counts. Continue telling us about our big winning Because we beat MSU at hom in January every year. We do that by default because the kids on board are talented. We lose in March because our talented kids play for a players coach who can't find a PG and relies on the press, which gets hammered by good guards, who happen to litter the field in the second weekend of the tourney.

Wow. Freak said we are not supposed to personally attack, but I guess you are covered under the same rule that governs hat who is a writer for the site so he can personally attack anyone who does not share his vitriol towards our coach.

It sounds like if the team actually focuses on defense and if Goins ends up being effective this year, you will say Pearl did a great job and is a better coach than you thought?

What is a corch? And, if you think that Bradshaw is the worst starter ever at UT, you must be 10 years old. I'd like to introduce you to some Wade Houston teams.

Actually, I'll give you Howell. He sucked as he went along. Otherwise, saying Lofton and Smith "just shot more" proves you're ideas of a moron are a little misdirected. Lofton clearly improved into a player that could drive and finish by his junior year and Smith went from a damn walk-on averaging 2 ppg to All-SEC!

You have to be the biggest idiot here to not recognize their progress. I like your other observations, though. Our shooting has dropped off since the greatest shooter in SEC history graduated? Really?! Did it take you all night to figure that one out?

If Pearl does something that says he is coaching winning basketball, I'll be the first to acknowledge it. Right now the disorganized O, matador D and limited player accountability speak volumes.

Thank you. That was so much better than the usual crap we get here of how Tennessee is terrible at this, Pearl sucks at that, no one develops, we are a disgrace, etc.

It's so much more envigorating to be a part of a board that actually supports the team instead of a collection of pissy posters who act like bitter coaching rejects.

Do you have background in basketball? You sound like you don't. Everything is about relative team strengths, but very little about execution and team play.

I just want to thank Unimane for your contribution to this site. I may have to actually start reading this site again instead of relying solely on Hoopsville. Of course that is only if I use the ignore function properly. If Volnation knew the amount of readers they are losing in their basketball section they might decide to make some changes. Alas I would be surprised to see this occur.

As far as basketball goes, I think every vol fan can say they were disappointed in last years team. However every other year Bruce has been here has been great. He simply has not been here long enough to know whether the first few years are the norm or last year is. This upcoming season will go a long way to determine most vol fans real feelings about Bruce and the future of the program. IF this season is roughly the same as last season (which would mean a disappointment), then we would all have to be a little concerned. IF, however we have a nice year and meet expectations (most preseason rankings have us top 10-20) then we will win at least 26-29 games and get to the Sweet 16 with a chance to advance, then even the most staunch Anti-Bruce will at least have to chill out for one off-season and let the rest of us enjoy it.

Which season will we have? NONE of us really know until the games are in the books, but half of the fun of sports is getting excited for what MAY happen, and the way this site has gone with specific posters dominating every discussion has completely drained the fun out of it. :hi:

It is certainly not unreasonable to expect a team that has all returning starters will produce an improved product this season. I agree that point guard play and lack of consistent outside shooting hurt last years team. Chism could be an inside scorer, but prefers to play outside and shoot the three.
This coaching staff has had a good history of players improving each year. Of course, you can always find a player who did not improve, but overall consistent improvement has been evident. I expect this team to challenge for the East and overall championships this year. With 23 wins last year, this team should exceed that level this year.

There isn't a single team that can reasonably expect to be in the Sweet 16 that Tennessee is any better than a 50/50 shot against. The only way Tanning Bed is getting a team to the Elite Eight this year is if they catch a break and play some Cinderella that played out of their minds the first weekend in the regional semi.

Isn't that cute. An anti-Bruce poster calling anyone that does not spew vile towards Bruce a homer. If you believe that withholding judgement on a team and a coach until the season plays out is homerism, then maybe you check this link (Urban Dictionary: Homerism).

It is quite obvious that you are disparaging Bruce based mostly on last year's performance, which as I stated previously was a complete disappointment to anyone with orange blood and eyes that work. I, as will most fans, watch this year in anticipation that this team should and will improve. If they do not (i.e. pg play, team defense, rebounding, and 3pt shooting are poor) then your arguments will have some validity and you will find many more people shifting to your side. However for you and Hat to spew your opinions like they are fact, set in stone and written in blood, and to insult anyone who disagrees has ruined the legitimate basketball discussion in this site. You can call me anything you like if its makes you feel better, but it does not in anyway support your argument. Only the play on the court can do that.

my expectations are that the guys won't look lost (on both sides of the ball) when forced into a half-court game. That will show me CBP actually put some effort into teaching the players something. The pass outside the arc for 30sec and launch a 3 offense isn't going to cut it anymore

Exactly! It's not as if last year was dramatically different from years prior, we just didn't make as many of the end of the shot clock 3s. Also, last year wasn't the first time we didn't play any D.
