Film breakdown of JM's plays

Joe is a 6th year senior. There is no excuse for him to look like a freshman at times.
That is fair, but it does seem like the routes are a bit unpredictable. I think both sides, Milton and the WRs are inconsistent and that is compounding to make the offense worse. There are times where we have two guys on top of each other, receivers rounding routes off badly, and then just straight up dropping the ball. To make matters worse, Milton is a one-read guy, he can't adjust on the run, and he throws a very flat ball that makes adjustments difficult. His laser beam of an arm is great but really hard on receivers. We see a receiving crew who does not have the explosiveness or crispness in route running to make easy throws and Milton is trying to squeeze balls in that are hard to catch. It is just a comedy of errors. We need the TEs in the game next week, but the coverages against our doubles sets will be really predictable if we can get in a decent schedule.

Just to help out with the conversation about JM.

"We do film study on every play from Joe Milton and the Tennessee Volunteers against the Texas A&M Aggies. Is Joe Milton to blame?"

~Bluechip Breakdown

IMO, JM has struggled at times, but he is not getting much help from his WRs. I would not bench him.

The Youtuber does a good job of breaking down Joe's plays. Worth the watch.

Thanks a lot I think this illustrates that all of Joe's 'bad' passes arent necessarily because he is inaccurate but there are other factors that affect them. Spy in the passing lane, ref in the passing lane, pressure in his face, egregious PI etc.

Joe Milton is what Joe Milton is at this point. Freak athlete, cannon arm, zero situational awareness. Running out of bounds on 3rd down with no one within 2 yards of him. Couple that with the last play of the Ole Miss game kind of seals it for me. Not saying the Vols won’t win, but they can run the ball very well, and the defense is improved and continues to do so, might have the best D line in the league. I’m encouraged to see that Hype can win this way.

Don't disagree with anything you said. Good post

You and I will disagree; the WRs had plenty of opportunities to make catches. aTm is still a very good defense; UT found a way to win with the rushing, and to me, a W is better than a bunch of yards, and UT gets an L. This is a team sport, and at one time or another, the OL or the WRs had chances to make this a higher-scoring game...jmo

My point, we won and that is that.
You are correct WR’s are expected to make those plays on teams that compete fr championships. Not every throw is going to be good but elite receivers make those plays.

Joe has to be better but one of those WR’s are going to have to step up and help him out.

Texas A&M was playing something that Saban used a lot at Alabama when Kirby was there. They call this route-matching Cover 3. You can tell by the alignment of the corners. At the 2:20 mark, you will notice how the bottomside corner is aligned with his eyes directly on the slot. This is a dead giveaway. However, it is important to note that initially, they were not in cover 3. They were in cover 6, a variant of cover 3 where the single side corner is playing cover one or cover two, and the trips side is playing quarters. However, when motioning to a 2x2 set, the corners read #2 and the slots read #1. There is a landmark, usually ten yards, where the defenders have to make a decision. If #2 cuts it short before that mark, then the slot stays on #2. If #2 goes vertical, then the corner stays with #2, and the slot covers #1. This was the answer to 2x2 formations and cover 3. Otherwise, you could just run four vertical routes, and the offense was 4v3 defenders. It was free points for the offense. This is exactly what you see on the first part of the review. Then when we went to a lot of stuff with tight ends, they went to a standard man defense. We were not good at getting open. Milton also stares at one guy and if he does not get open, he just freezes. On the 4th and two play, he locks on to Sampson, who he seems to really trust, but Sampson gets stuck between the TE and Keyton, so Joe runs himself out of space. FWIW, that play looked like either terrible execution or design, because even on a levels concept those three should not be that close. The spacing was really bad.
See the problem is all this confuses Joe as much as it does me.
But I haven’t been playing QB for 12 years.
He’s got ++physical tools, it’s just when things get complicated he struggles.

I’m more concerned about the WR situation right now. Webb and Nimrod haven’t seen enough action yet to really know what to expect but until RK and DT prove otherwise They should be starting.

Nimrod to me is the best WR we have. He is dependable. Throw him the ball and Squirrel
I'll take you're word but to me the sample size is to small to know that for sure, I thought Keyton was last year but I think he has trouble getting separation when he is more the focus. No Hyatt and now no Bru and no Tillman although he did miss a big portion last year. So Ramel may be seeing a lot better defenders.

Joe is what he is at this point, he’s never gonna have that “it” factor to him. Not sure how much it really matters with how the receivers have been though. Keyton’s regression this year is crazy.

I agree with his assessment. The wide receivers are struggling to get open and run clean routes. Joe's a little slow seeing and processing the defense. Some of his passes are a second or more slow on the release, but he is playing well enough given the lack of open receivers. There doesn't seem to be any real burners for him to use that big arm either.

did Thornton play? I do not remember seeing him.
I remember him on one play only. He is the one the bounced off of him and our other receiver caught it. It was right in Thornton's hands, actually one of Miltons very good passes.

Yes good QBs have had bad games. That’s not what makes me nervous. What does is the fact that the coaches did not seem to trust him to throw after that pick. Yes we were running the ball well, but it sure seemed like they wanted to take the game out of Joe’s hands (and against a bad A&M secondary).
we are in 2000 ravens mode lol

On the offsides in the first quarter resulting in a “free play,” he did not throw deep (1) and he scrambled out of bounds short of the first down before contact, when I think he could have made it (2). They ended up punting. On the 4th down try, he had the TE or FB wide open with his hands open demanding the ball late and he could have just hit him but held the ball and ran out of bounds or threw it away. These are plays that a D1 QB, especially one that has had 6 years of coaching and some playtime, should make yet he doesn’t. I think these are the things that bother most people (me too) about him. I could handle INT’s, they happen, but he has to make these plays.

Name me one QB in the lat 20 years at UT that has not had games like JM. If I remember right, Peyton had 4 Ints against Florida. I think UT fans are being way too hard on Joe. Does it make me more nervous than a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs? YES!

The game u mention he threw for 395 yards and multiple TDs against against one of the best Gator teams ever. Milton threw for 109. Yes QBs hsve bad games but Milton is bad game after game. He is JG level and ppl just need to except it. He was bad at Michigan. He was bad here before he got benched and he’s bad now. He will never be Hooker level, Iceman level, or even Bray level. Bray would be killing it this year with this team. Ppl just need to except that Milton will never be the leading reason we win. We win this year with rushing, special teams and defense.

Correct, but UT lost...who cares if a QB threw for 400 yards and it resulted in a L. Stats don't mean anything if they lose. 2nd place = 1st loser.
